Why can't I edit some particular pages?
Some pages that have been vandalized repeatedly are semi-protected, meaning that editing by new or unregistered users is prohibited through technical measures. If you have an account that is four days old and has made at least 10 edits, then you can bypass semi-protection and edit any semi-protected page. Some pages, such as highly visible templates, are fully-protected, meaning that only administrators can edit them. If this is not the case, you may have been blocked or your IP address caught up in a range block.
Where can I experiment with editing Wikipedia?
How do I create an article?
See how to create your first article, then use the Article Wizard to create one, and add references to the article as explained below.
How do I create citations?
  1. Do a search on Google or your preferred search engine for the subject of the Wikipedia article that you want to create a citation for.
  2. Find a website that supports the claim you are trying to find a citation for.
  3. In a new tab/window, go to the citation generator, click on the 'An arbitrary website' bubble, and fill out as many fields as you can about the website you just found.
  4. Click the 'Get reference wiki text' button.
  5. Highlight, and then copy (Ctrl+C or Apple+C), the resulting text (it will be something like <ref> {{cite web | .... }}</ref>, copy the whole thing).
  6. In the Wikipedia article, after the claim you found a citation for, paste (Ctrl+V or Apple+V) the text you copied.
  7. If the article does not have a References or Notes section (or the like), add this to the bottom of the page, but above the External Links section and the categories:
==References==
{{Reflist}}
What is a WikiProject, and how do I join one?
A WikiProject is a group of editors that are interested in improving the coverage of certain topics on Wikipedia. (See this page for a complete list of WikiProjects.) If you would like to help, add your username to the list that is on the bottom of the WikiProject page.

I lost hours of work in my sandbox article. I made numerous revisions and now it only shows a version from a few days ago.[edit]

Unless you click on the "publish changes" or similarly-labeled button, any work you do remains only within your browser and its cache. You must actively save your work to Wikipedia's servers (which includes granting the release mentioned on the editing page) for it to be retained. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 03:49, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the reply. I will be sure to save my work from now on. CusterDome (talk) 17:44, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

October 2023[edit]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Your user subpage at User:CusterDome may not meet Wikipedia's user page guidelines. It is intended for basic information about yourself, your interests and goals as they relate to editing Wikipedia, as well as disclosures of conflicts of interest and paid editing. Although a lot of freedom is allowed in personalizing your user page, it is not:

The user page guidelines have additional information on what is and what is not considered acceptable content. Please use your user sandbox or the draft article space to practice editing or to create new articles.

The link to your store on your user page is almost certainly a violation of the user page policy. Other problems are formatting it as a fake Wikipedia page and probably some of the external links. The link to your LinkedIn page might be okay. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 03:54, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I edited my user subpage and removed most of the content.
Also, I have drafted my first page and I wondered if you could look it over? It is located here:

Ouabache sculpture[edit]

Dear CusterDome. I just reviewed your article in your sandbox and made some changes. I've also added some comments for you within "" (for your info, anything added within the delimiters "" will be considered as a comment and will not be displayed in the article). Please include only those sources that actually talks about the sculpture. Others can be removed. Any info that the source doesn't have and was "built" by us will be considered original research and our own synthesis, which are not allowed in Wiki articles. Hope this helps. Please feel free to revert any of my changes that you feel is not correct. Once you finalize these corrections, you can go ahead and create the article using the article wizard. Cheers. Rasnaboy (talk) 04:59, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Rasnaboy, thank you for looking over my article. I implemented the edits that you suggested. I also added a new section named "Reception" and wanted to see if these additions are okay? I followed the Wikipedia guideline you suggested and didn't include any citations that didn't mention the Ouabache sculpture. Also, I obtained an image of the original plaque from the sculptor's widow. I am not sure how to cite this in the article. Thank you for helping with this! CusterDome (talk) 14:37, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I created a citation and used a screenshot of a text message exchange with Rebecca McNeely, the sculptor's widow. CusterDome (talk) 18:13, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright and Wikipedia[edit]

Control copyright icon Hello CusterDome! Your additions to Albert Pearson Stewart have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source. You must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. Read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices. Our policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. Significa liberdade (she/her) (talk) 02:36, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I obtained permission from the copyright owners to use images from the Boilermaker Music Makers book. I posted pdfs of the emails between me and the author of the book (Bennett) and the head of Purdue Musical Organizations.
Is the article okay now that edits were made? CusterDome (talk) 02:57, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I received permission to use material from the source cited. I published an email exchange with author Joseph L. Bennet and William E. Griffel the head of Purdue Music Organizations. The emails are posted as PDFs under my Wikimedia Commons space for CusterDome. CusterDome (talk) 10:53, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, the copyright holder for Boilermaker Music Makers has been unable to send an email to permissions-wikimedia.org. He can't get the email to recognized this as a valid address. I tried a test email and obtained the same problem. Oddly it works on my iPhone. Are you willing to reach out to William Griffel at Purdue university? His email is wgriffel@purdue.edu. Thanks! CusterDome (talk) 12:05, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I wanted to ask if you will review the status of the Albert Pearson Stewart Wikipedia page? I obtained permission from William Griffel of Purdue University to use scanned images from the Boilermaker Music Maker (Bennett) book published in 1987. Mr. Griffel sent an email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org stating that he has allowed the materal from the Bennett book to be used for the Albert Pearson Stewart page. I wanted to know if this is sufficient to allow the page to be reinstated, or is there not hope at all in this regard? Thanks. CusterDome (talk) 02:02, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
