I've noticed you've been editing Wikipedia daily since November 16th.

(Side note: to look at more of a person's contributions on a single page, once you have their contributions on your screen, at the top of the list click on a number of entries to view, like 20, and then in the URL in the address box at the top of your browser, change the 20 to a larger number, like 5000.)

Your work on Italy-related subjects caught my attention.

I especially like your List of Italian polymaths. Unfortunately it is in danger, and steps need to be taken to prevent its deletion.

Note that the List of polymaths was deleted. First it was renamed (I'm guessing), then the article under the new title was deleted. The relevant deletion discussions are:

Eventually a highly scrutinizing (though misdirected) editor will probably come along and nominate your list for deletion, applying arguments similar to those posed in the deletion debates listed above.

If you would like to protect the list from deletion, you have two challenges before you...

The first challenge is to find reliable references that establish that each individual on the list was/is in fact a polymath. This goes beyond mere casual statements of opinion in a news article or popular magazine (like People Magazine). Biographies about those individuals and books on polymathy/polymaths that identify a particular polymath would make good references. Whether or not a person was or was not a polymath (or at least considered to be a polymath) is a matter of historical fact, and books by respected historians and biographers are considered reliable sources. The more historians or biographers who have identified an individual as a polymath, the better.

The second challenge is to be prepared to debate policy in case an AfD is ever started. The strongest argument is that polymaths exist. If they did not, then none could be mentioned in the article polymath. A list of polymaths is just as valid a subject as an article on them, and not having a list of a class of things that has an article is a gap in Wikipedia's coverage. That some of the entries in a list have references that are too subjective or unreliable is not a good argument to delete the whole list.

Subjectivity itself is also not a good argument for deletion, as there are a great many subjective subjects covered on Wikipedia (such as psychoanalysis, dream interpretation, subjectivity, etc.). Wikipedia covers them anyways.

Concerning subjective lists, a case in point is List of topics characterized as pseudoscience, which has been hotly debated over the years, on its talk page, and in deletion discussions:

Lists of Italian Polymaths and Geniuses[edit]

Hi again. Just to let you know that I have, with much reluctance, had to support the plan to delete the lists of Italian geniuses and polymaths that you have worked on. I regret having to do this, because I can see that you have done a lot of good work on them, but the problem is that you seem to have used definitions of "polymath" and "genius" that arise simply from the opinions of your sources. I think a lot of the work you've done can be saved, though, by incorporating it into a suitable list called something like "notable Italian thinkers". Such a list is much more useful for our readers, because Wikipedia has a clear definition of notability, so when our readers consult it they know exactly what they're getting. The list of polymaths, on the other hand, relies on a composite of many people's opinions, so is of less value to our readers - most of our readers can form their own opinions, once we give them the facts!

I do appreciate that it's not nice to have people suggest deleting articles you've worked on; I've experienced it. Fortunately, none of what people say in deletion debates is personal. We're all trying, in our own ways, to improve Wikipedia. Good luck, and thank you!
