Introduction of Life series articles

Hi again. I have a small problem with the following description found in the introduction of many of these articles, something along the lines of "it was the fourth of Attenborough's specialised surveys following his major trilogy that began with Life on Earth." The problem here is that the third documentary of the trilogy was specifically about animal behavior, while the next was on plants. It seems somewhat strange to say plants are a more specialized topic than animals; it's roughly analogous to saying 'botany is a more specialized field than zoology'. We certainly can say this with birds, mammals etc in relation to zoology, but not really with plants. Is this just your own interpretation, or have the first three documentaries been described by others as a trilogy somewhat independent from the following ones? Fair use rationale for Image:Boxdelights.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Boxdelights.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Project FMF (talk) 23:42, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

POV on Top Gear

You recently removed a phrase describing the outcome of the Top Gear gardening efforts has having "predictable results." I think you misunderstood my meaning. The point was not to judge the outcome as predictable (i.e. routine or some related judgment) but rather to say things came out as we might expect whenever we see an undertaking Clarkson prefaces with "How difficult can it be?" (i.e.: a disaster!) I'm going to rethink how to phrase, then restore the comment using less ambiguous wording. Hopefully this will serve as a heads-up so it won't be reverted as POV where there is none. Thanks! --Drmargi (talk) 19:16, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Album Art on Coldplay Album

Chris,

I keep adding a reference to the album cover, its use of a famous painting and its meaning on the new coldplay album page, and it keeps getting deleted by someone (apparently working for a record company or something). If the article is going to reference the album cover art -- isn't it fair game to include a reference to the origins and meaning of that work of art:

I have proposed the following and referenced or footnoted it. If you want to change it again, go ahead, I concede, but I think its a useful, interesting and fair reference. Particularly since the album and artists have a subtle opposition to the Iraq war iand that is conveyed in the album and interviews, but the artwork on the cover ironically speaks to the opposite message, anyway, I propose:

"The album's artwork features the painting Liberty Leading the People (La Liberté guidant le peuple) by French painter Eugène Delacroix, commemorating the July Revolution of 1830, which is considered a commentary on the need for sacrifice and even bloodshed for the furtherance of liberty."

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Image copyright problem with Image:Histbritain2.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Histbritain2.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

This is an automated notice by FairuseBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. --FairuseBot (talk) 14:35, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your excellent edits on James Bond film series

Chris42,

All of your edits on the Bond film series are excellent and do impeccable trimming on stuff that was too wordy or needed grammatical fixing. My guess is about one-third of what you edited was originally by me, but you cleaned it without sacrificing content. I did (as you may have noted) revert one-half of your edit on the plot of The Living Daylights as I thought it important that the spy being impersonated is entirely fictitious and never existed. You asked if you "hoped it was still clear". It was indeed clear, but I thought misleading. But in general, I'm very impressed with your work.

--WickerGuy (talk) 17:57, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Reply

I agree with you both that "ideally, each summary should be just one sentence." and "I agree that the complex plots of certain of the films do present problems". The specific difficulty with Bond films is not just the complexity of their plots, but the fact that they consistently have a kind of "Chinese box" (or "onion"??) structure. The first part of the film seems to be about one thing, and then we find it is about something else. It isn't just that the films are Byzantine in the sense of maze-like, it's that they are nested in layers. This is what I noted in the section of the article Plot structure. The films I just could not develop short summaries of well were Octopussy, The Living Daylights, On Her Majesty's Secret Service and even more Die another Day. While most Bond films are two-layered, Die another Day practically seems to be an endless hall of mirrors. I've moderately modified Living Daylights per your suggestion.

Cheers,

--WickerGuy (talk) 18:58, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Postscript

I have to admit I also have a superstitious compulsion to include info about material upon which the title of the film is based, which is completely impossible for Die Another Day as it sort of a throwaway line near the end. However, the title of The Living Daylights comes from Bond's remark "I must have scared the living daylights out of her" when he is chastised by another British agent for deliberately missing his shot. Thus I include the missed shot in the synopsis. Similarly, the bizness about Bond trying to quit and discovering Moneypenny has changed his letter of resignation (which had the phrase "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" in the original draft) in OHMSS. This may be really obsessive-compulsive on my end, but it was part of my thinking. (One might handle this more appropriately with footnotes, but IMO that looks odd in a chart.)

Regards,

--WickerGuy (talk) 21:58, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Again thanks

Chris, you just cleaned up the one paragraph that I wanted to, but I think you did it better than I would have. (I was going to just add the word 'whatsoever' to the last sentence.) (Doing this work is almost like a crash course in editing style.) --WickerGuy (talk) 19:30, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

For a change I disagree

Chris,

IMO, "elaborate stunts" are what Buster Keaton, cheerleaders, and stage magicians like David Copperfield do. While impressive, they usually entail fairly obvious elements of pre-planning and rehearsal which is not transparent and give no illusion of spontaneous thinking on one's feet.

Every single James Bond pre-title sequence from Spy Who Loved Me to Die Another Day with the exception of the silly (and campy) ski-chase which opens A View to a Kill can be correctly and appropriately described as "death-defying".
Hooking Sanchez helicopter in License to Kill, riding a burning truck over a cliff in The Living Daylights, the bungee jump and plane recovery in Goldeneye, the culmination of the speedboat chase on the hot air balloon in The World is Not Enough, the theft of a nuclear-armed plane just in time to evade a bomb in Tomorrow Never Dies, the hovercraft chase culminating over a waterfall in Die Another Day and the precedent-setting openings of The Spy Who Loved Me (30,000 foot ski jump with parachute) and Moonraker and finally the flight of the plane being chased by a missile through the plane hanger in Octopussy, every single one of these can be correctly described as "death-defying".

Again, I associate the phrase "elaborate stunts" with what Buster Keaton does. They're impressive, but the extended advance setup (as implied by that phrase) is visible to the viewer and as such I think it is less appropriate than "death-defying" in this context.

Regards, --WickerGuy (talk) 14:31, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

Settled and wondering

OK, we're good with the wording. However, your note has me wondering if the phrase "death-defying" is more overused over in the UK where you reside than in the US where I am (or if the phrase seems even more over-exposed due to the recent Gillian Armstrong film). I don't see it as cliched, but perhaps it is in your neck of the woods. Best, --WickerGuy (talk) 22:02, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

Your anti-vandalism work

Hello, and thank you very much for your efforts to remove vandalism from Wikipedia. Here's a tip: When you revert vandalism on a Wikipedia page, consider leaving a note on the vandal's talk page. You can usually identify the user who vandalised a page by viewing the page's history and comparing revisions. WP:UTM lists various messages that you can use in this way and gives guidelines for using them. Good luck. -- Smjg (talk) 23:56, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Micra k12c.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —teb728 t c 04:30, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time

Your recent edit removed the template {{cn}} from the page The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, even though the required changes have not been made. Please be careful not to remove any maintenance templates from articles before the issue is satisfactorily resolved. If you disagree with it or you are not sure if any more work needs to be done, discuss the issue on the relevant talk page and allow time for a consensus to be reached before you remove the notice. If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. Fair use rationale for File:Yesminister7.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Yesminister7.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.
