Followup on supplying other site's credentials

As we had already discussed in July 2015, please do not list credentials to login to other websites, as you recently repeated twice at Talk:San Antonio Spurs. There is no consensus to allow this practice that likely circumvents the terms and conditions of other websites. This appears to be a violation of the spirit of WP:NOT. I was just trying to clarify how I accessed certain documents in order to verify the authenticity and official nature of the San Antonio Spurs' Reproduction Guideline Sheet. WP:CRYSTAL

Be sure to read WP:CRYSTAL in regards to stadium tenant lists. Generally, even when a website gives a planned set of dates a team will play at a stadium, we only include the start year since the end year is subject to change. The stadium in Inglewood hasn't even started yet, so a number of factors could delay its completion. The 2018 date should be mentioned in the body of the article, but for the tenant list it should say "2016–present" until the Rams actually leave (same for TCF Bank Stadium and the Vikings) and any mention of 2018 has to include something to make it clear it's a tentative or planned date. Leaving it as is in the lead without specifying 2018 now means there's less information that could potentially be out of date. When the Rams leave, then it can be updated to past tense with the specific years they played there. --JonRidinger (talk) 21:34, 19 January 2016 (UTC)

Actually, construction has started on the City of Champions Stadium in Inglewood, California. Ground was broken on site way back in October 2015. However, I still see your point and promise to leave it alone. I tried to mention that the Rams plan on playing at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum from 2016–2018 in the lead paragraph. That's fine, but since it states it is a temporary home, that's good enough for the lead. The details of the planned years are in the body of the article later on. Once the Rams do move, then the lead can be updated again. Kansas City Chiefs

While the image itself appears to be official with the NFL Enterprises copyright on the bottom, per WP:RELIABLE because it is uploaded to personal (not an official page affiliated with the Chiefs or NFL) it qualifies as WP:USERGENERATED because Wordpress is in a way, social media. Please read these policies and try to find the logo slick on a reliable source before you add it back. Why we have to consider this not reliable because it is a personal page and we have to assume that was made in Photoshop or other photo editing software.

There's also the issue that a reliable source already exists for the official team colors, so an additional source is also unnecessary--Rockchalk717 03:30, 22 January 2016 (UTC)

That is a WP:RELIABLE source. Please DO NOT remove it again. It came from this thread, which is titled "OFFICIAL NFL LOGO SLICKS" (the actual list of each of the 32 NFL team logo slicks–including the Kansas City Chiefs–is found here). The actual Logo Slick was downloaded from this source, which is an OFFICIAL NFL source. Please DO NOT remove it. It is OFFICIAL. I have searched the Internet far and wide for it, and the sources I have listed are as official as possible. Also, it is NOT WP:USERGENERATED, and it DOES NOT come from Wordpress. It was hosted on Microsoft's OneDrive. It is NOT a personal page, and was NOT created or modded using Photoshop software by anyone else other than NFL Properties. You just further proved my point. Footballidiot.com itself appears to be an unreliable source per WP:USERGENERATED especially since that is a thread on a website. And the user that uploaded your "reliable source" is named "pick6" which obviously not the name a "known expert" which is required for these types of websites. Do not add back until we have this issue resolved and do not start an WP:EDITWAR with me on this subject which will happen if you continue to add it back in which puts us both at risk for a block. Continuing to add back this obviously (per policy) unreliable source will result in me having an admin intervene. What don't you get? The sources I have provided are WP:RELIABLE, especially when they came from NFLCommunications.com. Please STOP removing those references. I'm not interested in getting into an WP:EDITWAR with you, so here's ANOTHER REFERENCE which states that the reference from NFLMedia.com is OFFICIAL. I don't know how I proved your point, because the FootballIdiot.com website hosted the Logo Slick, which was downloaded from NFLMedia.com (Perhaps we can use the NFLMedia.com URL as a reference, in the spirit of compromise?). Please STOP removing that reference. I have contacted the Chiefs' PR Department on Twitter directly to ask about finding an official Logo Slick from the Chiefs' website, since that's only what you'll accept. Also, I did remove the HTML colors that did not match the official team colors in the reliable source given for team colors. I disagree. The TeamColors.Arc90.com reference IS a WP:RELIABLE source. "All NFL colors are official (see sources below). I'm in agreement here. I just want the issue to die. I'm not trying to badmouth any other editor, but why does Rockchalk717 (talk) feel like the sources I used aren't official? Yes, I know that the NFLMedia.com sources now redirect to NFLCommunications.com. I mean, I tried to tell Rockchalk717 that "All NFL colors are official (see sources below).The NFL provides official RGB, HEX, CMYK, and Pantone colors (so none of the colors you see on Team Colors are conversions)." (side note: that's from TeamColors.Arc90.com). I mean, I've tried to reason with him (I suggested using the NFLMedia.com/3-letter conference abbreviation_division name.zip URL as references (for example, [1]), but he wouldn't entertain that idea). I mean, I understand how he feels, that it came from a forum, and that he doesn't think it's a reliable source, but I'm tired of arguing with other editors (not just him, but also Y2kcrazyjoker4 (talk), among others) about official sports team colors/sources. I'm not trying to claim ownership; I just don't understand why this is an issue with other editors. I hope I don't get blocked for saying all this. I've tried really hard not to edit-war with other editors, and to not violate the three-revert rule again, since that's how I got blocked in the past. My issue with your sources is most of them qualify as WP:USERGENERATED meaning someone other then a known expert (ESPN or NFL Network analyst) or someone affiliated with the team (team Twitter pages) generated the source themself. But I am wiling to let his die. This has blown way out of proportion and my suggestion is if you have a source that is not from ESPN.com, NFL.com, newspapers, etc., run it by other more experienced (not even talking about myself) editors first because (no personal attack intended and I apologize if it is offensive) you don't seem to understand what qualifies as a reliable source. So I will back off, so long as you thoroughly read WP:RS even if you have read the page before, read it again, and we will not have any issues as long as your sources are reliable and you source potential controversial edits. I sincerely apologize if my wording here makes me sound arrogant, that's not my intention, there just isn't very many good ways to say what I wanted to say without sounding arrogant.--Rockchalk717 05:53, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

New Orleans Pelicans

I've checked the WP:CONTRAST using both Gold and Red as background colors. For reference, here's the contrast level with a Gold background and white text: [2]. The reference (from Snook.ca, a reliable contrast checker) says the two mixed colors are not contrast compliant (in any form, including WCAG 2 AA (18pt+) and WCAG 2 AAA (18pt+)), meaning that people that may have color blindness might not be able to see the colors on-screen. By contrast, here's the contrast level with a Red background and white text: [3], also from Snook.ca. That reference says those two mixed colors are contrast compliant (sort of, the brightness difference is greater than 125, but the color difference is not greater than 500). It also says the red background & white text colors are compliant in WCAG 2 AA (18pt+), and WCAG 2 AAA (18pt+), but not compliant in WCAG 2 AAA. So, that's my explanation for how I determined that having a red background with white text is easier for people who might be color-blind to see on-screen than a gold background with white text. I figured that all 3 of the New Orleans Pelicans' main colors should be represented in the template. Charlesaaronthompson (talk) 23:20, 30 January 2016 (UTC)

But you called the current scheme better. I disagree. How is it better? I don't see how contrast could be an issue when it has nothing to do with the background. In infoboxes, the background is blue, not gold or red. I didn't actually change that. I changed the colour of the border because how it is now is too similar to the Washington Wizards' colours and it's not actually clear that it's the Pelicans' colours. Having gold, like the New Orleans Pelicans article does, is more appropriate as it's clearly the Pelicans' colours and nobody else's. You should change the article to be the same as the module if you're going to have it like that.. The article also lists gold in the infobox before red. Anyway, despite me thinking the current colours are bad, I really don't care very much. Have the colours how you see fit. —DangerousJXD (talk) 01:20, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

@DangerousJXD: I'm going to change the New Orleans Pelicans' colors at Module:Basketball color/data. There's no reason to include all 3 colors. This article from Pelicans.com (way back when the new name, logos and colors were revealed in 2013) states that the primary color is Navy blue, and the secondary color is Gold. You're right. Blue and red are too similar to the Washington Wizards' colors. I'm changing the border color at the module to fit the Pelicans' color scheme. I just thought I'd give you a heads-up. Just FYI, any time a news article is cited, even if the news article is online, the "cite news" or "cite press release" template should be used, not "cite web". If it's from the online version of a newspaper, use "newspaper" since it would likely be printed as well. News stories are often used as citations, but are not required have a URL, like in the case of articles found on microfilm (which I have used many times). Questions

Charles, I have two questions. First, why did you remove the Miami reference from Vermont when it says that it is used for the hex code? There is no reason to remove it, simply because the other reference does not include the hex code. That is why the note was there, which is discussed on the module's talk page. Secondly, why is it so hard for you to not be able to update all articles of a team if you change the colors like you did for the University of Kentucky? @Corkythehornetfan: I removed the Miami reference from Vermont at Module:College color/data because the University of Miami (Florida) and the University of Vermont are two separate and distinct universities. Also, at the module, I have added a new reference that applies to the Vermont Catamounts. It comes from the University of Vermont's Style Guide (the page number I linked to gives the athletic color guidelines). But this displays the hex codes and Vermont's doesn't... both have the same CMYK values. I realize they are two separate universities, but if one has the same code and looks identical, why not just use that? FFCC00 was also a good code, it's just the web safe code... I understand we are all volunteers here. I don't have a big enough interest in colors to drive this, and neither of you might either (so this is the last time I'll offer unsolicited advice on this subject). Super Bowl Box Score

Whats wrong with the way I entered in the box score last night? It's consistent with every other box score of all the teams I've seen this season, in addition to being the same format as all the box scores on the playoffs page. I disagree. Navy blue is not a secondary color. Look at the Athletics Style Guide (used as the reference for Syracuse at Module:College color/data). It states that the color palette is Syracuse Orange and Syracuse Athletics Navy. The navy blue color should be listed in the infobox of the main athletics article (Syracuse Orange). Here is the reference for the Syracuse Orange's athletic branding. Also, the main colors for all NCAA Division I athletic teams should be listed in the infobox. That's their brand guide... It's how they brand. Just because it's listed in their brand, doesn't mean that's their actual school colors. I've provided 3 reliable sources where they only list orange as their school color. If they wanted blue as their school color, they would be listing that in their media guides, but they don't. When I've been adding the names, I've looked VERY closely at their actual school colors, not just their brand guide. The school is just like Kansas State, who only has Royal purple for their color, but uses silver as their secondary color. Again, I disagree. Orange may be the only color the university uses, but this webpage says that Athletics Navy is an approved color for the Syracuse Orange. It was in the Module for border purposes. That's the only reason. There really isn't a reason to remove it from the navboxes, just the infoboxes. The "blue" is not a primary color, only for branding. We need to refer to the school colors they list on their website and media guides, not just the branding website. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want to include the "bright orange" used on Idaho State's logos or the gray used for the university would you? Because that's what I take from this. The bright orange and the gray are not part of the university's colors, just the black and (darker) orange. The gray and bright orange may not be located on the brand guide right now, but they use it so it would most likely be on their next palette. If you add blue to Syracuse, then you are adding the gray and bright orange to Idaho State. I strongly discourage that, though. Buffalo logo

If an SVG version of a logo already exists, there is no reason to upload a PNG version of the same thing, such as with File:University at Buffalo Bulls athletic mark.png. The SVG was already being used at Buffalo Bulls and other Buffalo athletic pages since it is not copyrighted. SVG is a better file as it displays clearer on all screen sizes where PNG has limits, on top of the white background present in the file you uploaded. @Sabbatino: The reasoning behind restoring the championship navigation boxes for each NBA team is because the templates for each NBA Finals has the team name embedded within the template (for example, the template San Antonio Spurs 2013–14 NBA champions has the San Antonio Spurs article wikilink in the title, and also a wikilink to the 2014 NBA Finals in the title). Also, I restored the templates because it allows for readers of a specific NBA team article to instantly navigate to another related article about the NBA Finals a team played in and won. Piping

You do not need to pipe city names to the "city, state" version if the given city article isn't titled as such. Piping should be used sparingly and when appropriate. That's usually to make a title shorter or for instances like Cleveland Browns relocation controversy where the title doesn't always fit its intended use as a link. But whenever possible, just use the title of the article. City names like Cleveland and Baltimore don't need the adjoining state names, any more than London needs "England" or Paris needs "France" since they are primary topics of the word. In other words, saying something is "in Cleveland" most likely refers to the city in Ohio. Same for Baltimore meaning the city in Maryland. That's also true for Cleveland Stadium. "Cleveland Municipal Stadium" is a common name, but the name of the stadium was always "Cleveland Stadium" (and that name was also commonly used), which is why the article is titled as such. Locally, it was simply "Municipal Stadium". So yeah, use the article title unless absolutely necessary to use piping, like when the title has parenthesis or another form of disambiguation in it.

And, with abbreviations, only use abbreviations in parenthesis if the abbreviation is very well-known and/or is used later in the article. NFL and NBA are fairly well known; MLS and MLB not as much, so if they aren't later used in the article, I'd recommend not using them. --JonRidinger (talk) 01:37, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

Non-free image use in rivalry articles

Hi Charlesaronthompson. Just wanted to let you know that File:MiamiMarlinscap.PNG and File:MilwaukeeBrewers caplogo.svg are non-free files which means that each use of them is required to satisfy all 10 of the non-free content criteria listed at WP:NFCCP. One of these criteria is WP:NFCC#10c which says that a separate, specific non-free use rationale needs to be provided for each use. These files do not have such a rationale for their use in Citrus Series and Brewers–Cubs rivalry respectively, so their use in those article does not comply with WP:NFCC. A superficial fix would simply be to add a non-free use rationale, but I don't think a valid rationale can be written for these articles based upon WP:NFCC#8 and WP:NFCC#3. Normally, non-free logos such as these are considered OK for primary articles about the teams themselves, but not for secondary articles such as individual season articles, individual player/coach articles, rivalry articles, etc. because such usage tends to be more decorative than contextual (i.e., including sourced discussion about the logo itself). Of course, there are always some exceptions to the rule, so if you feel that non-free use is justified, then please provide a suitable rationale for each use which explains why. It might be a good idea, however, to get some feedback from others first via WP:FFD or WP:MCQ to be on the safe side. You can ask a question at WP:MCQ simply by following the instructions listed under "How to ask a question" located above the page's table of contents. You can also ask for feedback by starting a discussion at WT:NFCC: That works just like a regular talk page so all you need to do is click on "New section" at the top and ask your question. Please note that WT:NFCC is set up to redirect to Wikipedia talk:Non-free content, but that is where questions about Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria are asked. WP:FFD is a bit more formal since it is the main noticeboard for discussing file related matters, including non-free file usage, on Wikipedia. You can list a file for discussion by following the instructions at the top of the FFD main page. These discussions tend to be a bit formal and focus on how relevant policies/guidelines do or do not apply. They are typically closed by an administrator in accordance with WP:FFDAI. Just for reference, Wikipedia's non-free content policy is intentionally designed to be strict in order to limit the use of non-free content. Each usage is required to satisfy all 10 of the non-free content criteria listed in WP:NFCCP and this can sometimes be pretty hard to do. If you want to use a non-free logo like these in a rivalry article, you're going to need to clearly show how all 10 criteria are satisfied. So, it might be a good idea for you to take a close look at WP:NFC and also possibly Wikipedia:Arguments to avoid in image deletion discussions before rushing into FFD. As I posted above, non-free logos like these are typically not considered NFCC-compliant for secondary articles such as those about individual seasons, rivalries, players, etc., but perhaps you will be able to make a strong enough case to convince others otherwise.

Finally, another option might be to try and find something already on Commons which is freely licensed or upload something yourself which can be freely licensed to serve essentially the same encyclopedic purpose as the non-free logo. Many sports teams have wordmarks which are just simple text logos considered to be too simple to be eligible for copyright protection and thus are treated as public domain. Some examples of these can be found in c:Category:Major League Baseball logos. If you don't find one you can use already on Commons, then maybe there's one online somewhere which you can upload to Commons. I found this, and this after a Google search. They seem to be OK enough for Commons. If you're not sure how to do the uploading, then you can ask someone at MCQ or at c:COM:VP/C for help. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:15, 6 July 2016 (UTC)

Please don't re-order the colors, especially when white is the font color (second in module). All you needed to do – if your edit was correct – was remove "name2=White" from the list. According to the mbb 2015–16 media guide (see this link), "Navy (blue)", "Red", and "White" are the school colors. Order doesn't matter here, but white is a school color. Idaho Vandals

These are not compliant per WP:CONTRAST... See here. "Sort of" doesn't exactly mean it is compliant. This is not compliant, either. Your goal background and silver border is a horrible combination that does not work at all. It is best to have it like it was... or, I would, support a silver background, black font with the gold border so we can stay completely compliant. It does say "sort of", but the difference with this one is that all the boxes below say "YES", which means it has a higher contrast than what the current version is. Thoughts? @Corkythehornetfan: My reasoning in changing the colors at Module:College color/data was to get a color combination that accurately represented what the University of Idaho's colors were. I like your idea of silver background, black font with a gold border. I think if you wanted to change the colors for Idaho at the module to reflect that (silver background, black font, gold border), I would support that. I guess I didn't think it through enough when I changed them earlier today. I will support (not interfere) and let you change them to whatever is WP:CONTRAST-compliant at the module. Penn State

Re: This edit – I extracted the logo from the PDF to vectorize it. About 99% of the time, the colors the school uses is in the PDF. This is because the file is already in the PDF as a vectorized (SVG) image. Also, according to their Game Notes (and other sports), the colors are the same (#091F40), but also are listed as 'Blue and 'White', not 'Navy Blue and White'.  #002D62  is too light, and doesn't match the game notes and art sheet –  #091F40 . The art sheet was updated just two months ago, which probably means they haven't updated the website yet. Even this code isn't close to the #002D62. Hey, is there a consenus on having the LA Galaxy and NYRB color templates changed on their respective articles? The code there isn't showing their primary colors and is therefore misleading.
