Scottish Terrier Edit[edit]

Hi you removed my external link to a new site with daily Scottish Terrier news. You said it was unencyclopedic and referred me to a reference page on external links, but the reference page does not use the word "unencyclopedic."

At this point, I am interested in two things:

1. Restoring the link, which I believe meets the criteria for an external link and

2. Interviewing you for an article I am writing on crowdsourcing. You seem to have an interesting profile and I am intrigued by the role you play here at Wikipedia. Boisblaireau 20:12, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I couldn't reply on my talk page; I had to protect it from editing for a while. At this point, I would like to point you to the section of the external link guidelines entitled "Links normally to be avoided", specifically item 11: "Links to blogs and personal web pages, except those written by a recognized authority.". I don't think that the blog was written by a recognized authority.
Regarding the interview: That would depend on how much information I have to give out. If it's Wikipedia-related stuff like how long I've been editing, what motivated me to become an admin, that's OK. Name, phone number, definitely not. I like my privacy. Veinor (talk to me) 20:24, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes there is weird stuff going on at your site. Ok, listen, the blog is new so I'll drop it for now, but if and when it develops an audience, it seems to me it's an obvious candidate for inclusion. I think you have to remember that it says "links normally to be avoided" not "links always to be avoided."

Re the interview, it could be done privately. I'm happy to let you know who I am and give you some links to the assignmentzero project. Absolutely no interest in outing you, just in your role as a sort of crowd sourcing cop so to speak. Boisblaireau 20:48, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Eh, I'm not really of the opinion that linking to blogs is ever good; anybody can create one, and there's no real fact-checking. But we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
As for the interview: What format? I'm not willing to do phone-calls, snail mail, or face-to-face, but I think anything else would be fine. I can't do any chat programs other than IRC and AIM, though. You'd know why I'm kinda worried about personal information if you knew me. It's not that I don't trust you... I have my reasons. As for this 'assignmentzero', it looks like an interesting idea. If I understand it correctly, you have a bunch of people writing journalism stories and then professionals vetting them? If not, feel free to correct me. Veinor (talk to me) 21:00, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's not my project. I'm just a participant. I'm happy to give you my real name. I just don't want to put it out here. Re chat, I don't do it. My daughter does MSN. Let me see if I can get AIM and get back to you here.

On the blog subject, given that you are a Wikean, I'm surprised you're so negative about blogs. Just because it's in cyberspace doesn't make it any less authoritative. You have to assess the product itself but, as you said, we'll get back to it. Boisblaireau 21:46, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If chat would be inconvenient, I'm perfectly willing to e-mail. I'd actually prefer that over AIM, given that it's easier that way for me to look over like a log or whatever in case I want to read it again. Veinor (talk to me) 22:00, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK, e-mail's good. Where do I send it? Boisblaireau 22:12, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

my username@gmail.com (cloaked, of course, to avoid the spambots). Veinor (talk to me) 22:15, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK, e-mail has been sent. Boisblaireau 14:48, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Dachshund. Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include (but are not limited to) links to personal web sites, links to web sites with which you are affiliated, and links that attract visitors to a web site or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Since Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. If you feel the link should be added to the article, please discuss it on the article's talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you. OhNoitsJamie Talk 16:26, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm. The Daily Dachshund and Dog News is indeed a blog but not a personal one. It's an aggregator that adds value. It covers Dachshund news, as it happens, and it is not, as an earlier Wikipedean suggest, just a Google feed. A cursory glance will show it has a lot to offer. IN fact, this is the kind of news source that couldn't have existed before the web. And I think by removing the link you are depriving Dachshund lovers of a source of news they'd like. Instead of interpreting Wikipedia's rules in the most narrow minded way -- use of Flickr, Youtube and Ads do not automatically disqualify site nor does the fact that it's a blog -- why not ask yourself, "If I were someone looking for information on Dachshunds, would it help to know about this site?" If the answer is yes, please restore the link.

Your recent edits[edit]

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. On many keyboards, the tilde is entered by holding the Shift key, and pressing the key with the tilde pictured. You may also click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot (talk) 11:31, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
