Improper reverting of a disambiguation

You have reverted the following hatnote in the page Daniel Lazard:

Not to be confused with Michel Lazard, another French mathematician after whom are named Lazard rings.

Your summary for that edit was: Remove hatnote. Goes against MOS guidlines in this case. Which MOS guideline is against this hatnote? WP:HN does not mention such a case, where a people is ambiguously cited in an article title. In any case, such a disambiguation is strongly needed to avoid that a user who want to know more about the introducer of Lazard rings to read the wrong page. This confusion between the two mathematician called Lazard is very frequent. I have even encounter it several times by former students on one of them. First off, you are editing your own page. I suggest you do no edit your page anymore. I don't think you have done anything wrong. In fact, I think you have done everything right by being up front about it and asking a question here when there is a "dispute". I have nothing but high praises for what you have done. It is just that it is best to stay away from the "appearance of evil".

Michel Lazard doesn't have an article. It appears he should have one. Could you write one up?

First off, new talk sections go at the bottom of most people's talk pages.

I removed the techcrunch reference because none of the things that were being referenced in the WikiPedia article by techcruch were to be found in the techcrunch article. If you are referring to the techcrunch interview, interviews are deemed unreliable for most things. For example, the interview saying he got his start because of his best friend, the CEO of Zappos, cannot be used as this is a claim about third party. This has to be documented by a reliable source. Please see WP:SOURCES.

Well WP:SOURCES backs up the use of my interview completely: "Base articles on reliable, third-party, published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy. Source material must have been published (made available to the public in some form);" [TechCruch is all of these things and the interview is published]

"Electronic media may also be used, subject to the same criteria."

(TechCruch interview is "Electronic media") - WP:Sources says nothing about not using interviews.

Also you removed a reference to med blogs, one of the most respected online medical communities where authors are by invitation only, this counts (also from WP:Sources) as a reliable source: "Several newspapers host columns they call blogs. These are acceptable as sources if the writers are professionals and the blog is subject to the newspaper's full editorial control."

Not all electronic media are the same. A newspaper article on the web and a blog are both "electronic media", but are different creatures.

A straight up interview by a subject talking about themselves is self-published regardless of the medium. For example, 60 Minutes does an interview with a subject at the beginning. 60 Minutes follows up the interview showing all the lies. Is the interview a reliable source? No. You cannot use a self published source that involves claims about a third party. The interview was used to reference that CEO of Zappos is a best friend and prodded him to do the videos. This is claims about a third party.

The med blog says it got information from another source. I also removed the med blog because it was only being used as a reference for his name. You do not need a reference to verify somebody's name unless the name maybe of doubt. A movie star who legal changed their name, but says they never did comes to mind. That is really useful. I immediately looked for DRC, and then Sudan, and did not find either. But no problem. Kenya gives Bantu and Nilotic rules and Algeria gives Arabic rules. So this is a breakthrough. Too bad it is not in more accessible format, but still, it is way better than nothing. It should be referenced in the WP guideline on name sequence. I can see no reason why WP would adopt any other standard. Maybe WP could give a simplified version for each language group... Aymatth2 (talk) 14:50, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

I would say the subject deserves a WP:something guideline page of its own, and am sure you would get no objections from anyone and a lot of support if you just went ahead and created one. Maybe sort of announce your intention on Wikipedia talk:Categorization of people. My guess is that a) the rules are mostly language-specific, not country-specific, and b) there is a relatively small number of rule sets, with a given rule set applying to several languages. No need to repeat it for each language or country, but maybe a cross-reference would be useful.

For example, for Bantu-group languages (many languages, several countries), the general rule is something like:

• European first names are not included in the sort
• If the name contains a hyphenated pair "wa-xxx" that starts with "wa-", the main sort key is WA-XXX, followed by any words after wa-xxx, followed by the words before wa-xxx
• If the name contains an unhyphenated "wa", the main sort key is XXX, where xxx is the word that follows "wa", followed by any words after xxx, followed by the words before wa
• Otherwise, the main sort key is the last word, followed by the other words in the sequence given.

It would take a fair amount of work to spell out all the rules, but would be extremely useful. I don't know what the protocols are for this sort of thing, an admin should advise, but wonder if it would be worth approaching IFLA and asking them whether they would waive copyright? Firstly, thank you for your considerate feedback. Yes, there was quite a bit to work on and I have made the changes and there are a couple of things I need to clarify too.

After reading your comments and going through the article, I realized how commercial and biased the article had seemed. As a result, I have tried remove whatever advertising or promotional language use.

Secondly, thanks for the re-direct for the matter of the fact that she is at times referred to as GK or Gurpreet Kaur, which make up the initials G.K. Having regarded that, the article on the India Se website cites her name as Gurpreet Sanghar. Please do bear in mind that her articles are featured in publications that are not showcased online as per normal unlike the scanned versions found on fan websites, which are totally inappropriate. Given how exclusive India Se is, readers have to subscribe to the magazine in order to read the full story. That is why, you can only see the the few paragraphs of the story on the website. Most of the time books and films are easily attributed as compared to articles. However, I do have her original articles in pdf. format for verification but I suppose I cannot upload them? Also all of her TV shows are accredited and credible, including 'Pure Allure' and can be found on her website directly under the heading 'Media Gallery.' But how do I reference the individual TV show clips online for verification?

Next, for the music album, 'Illamai Jolly Jolly', I have added more information about the production and the cause of the album, which is essential. This time, I have referenced that bit with the same article once removed as it is now very relevant to the production of the album. GK had hosted the press launch too, which is available on her website, so these are verified pieces of work. However, her shows are only shown on television or cable, and are not available online, except for the 'My First Million' trailer, which is accessible online. Zee TV and MediaCorp are reputable channels and their works are bound to exclusivity and copyright. You will realize this when you Google up Singaporean TV personalities online and their shows are hard to find online....in Singapore, please bear that we only have one media broadcast centre, MediaCorp unlike other countries which have several stations, hence the limited viewing.

I have removed the IWG Fashion Calendar that GK was a part of as there are no pictures available online, except for a fan-created facebook page. The reason being that the calender is currently being sold for 2012. Please do regard that the calendar was launched by India Se's editor and GK was featured in magazine that she wrote for. Then again, I excluded that portion as it may lead to partiality when that it not the case. India Se is proud NRI magazine that caters to reporting on the significant issues concerning South Asian Diasporas around the world and GK was essentially featured.

As far as the 'Living Persons' portion is concerned, how do I authenticate her existence when all credible information is on her website. Her website is not simply a resume portfolio but contains her repertoire of work so far and helps maintain a connection with her fans.

Please do not delete G.K. Sanghar's page as it bears a lot of relevance. GK Sanghar is only one of the few Punjabi TV personalities in Singapore, to have excelled in the media industry and serves as an inspiration to the youth. Just because her work is solely up on her website does not mean that her work is not legitimate and authentic given that station logos and show titles are made obvious. She has only been around 2 years and has covered appropriate publishing to broadcasting at a young age, and she is a familiar face.

Also, I have made amendments to the External Links with better referencing and removed all dead links.

Hope this clears it all up and do propose some advice.

Because he was member of the Wisconsin State Assembly, not Norway's. He was born in Norway, but moved to Wisconsin as a kid. He received his "fame" in Wisconsin. You generally only assign geographic banners where the person received their fame.

From WikiProject Norway, "This project covers the creation and editing of articles related to the nation of Norway, its cities, counties, geography, transport, culture, history and so on. It aims to expand Wikipedia's resources on Norway in a fair and accurate manner." This doesn't apply to Assemblyman in Wisconsin. Bgwhite (talk) 18:40, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

• I think you misunderstood. His name is Ding Shijia and I'm not disputing that. It is Chinese custom to write their surname first. So, his surname or family name is Ding, just like yours is Singh. In the article and the DEFAULTSORT, it was written as if Shijia was the surname. He goes by Mr. Ding and not Mr. Shijia. Sometimes, when somebody from China moves west, they change their name to western order. But, in the references, they addressed him as Mr. Ding, so he did not change it. • Generally, the title is what the person is goes by. He is known by Ding Shijia in China and in the western press, so no need to change. Korean, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Japanese and Hungarian names also follow the same pattern as Chinese names, but Hungarians and Japanese reverse the order of their name outside of their countries. I already saw your past contributions and how good they were, which is why I asked you about the articles instead of taking it up to a higher authority. But, creating 10 or so articles in which very little information is correct is the wrong way to do things. You need to change you "style". Only create one article at a time, make sure the information is correct and add references to the article. Next time, another editor may see another one of your new articles and put a speedy delete on them. I find it funny that in China, they have short one syllable names. Go across the mountains and there are these names that take a couple of pages to write down and include everything from their hometown to their favorite colour. The footballers had reliable sources. Haven't a clue on the Korean one. In any event, the rule for BLPprod is:

"...the process requires that the article contain no sources in any form (as references, external links, etc.), which support any statements made about the person in the biography."

So, if there is there is a source, reliable or not, then the tag shouldn't be applied. Over the past summer, the rules did include reliable, but was removed in September. That is probably what is messing you up. It messed me up too.

There are cases where an unreliable source should be removed... A Facebook reference making claims about a 3rd party. I remove the source, but do I put a BLPprod or an unreferenced tag? If it is new, I put the BLPprod. But, I don't know of any rule about this. Bgwhite (talk) 07:55, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi. I notice you are removing the WP Sports tag from lots of articles with AWB. Please read the Rules of Use, which states "2.Don't edit too quickly; consider opening a bot account if you are regularly making more than a few edits a minute." Um, WikiProject Sports does not include people. I'm only removing the banner from people. From WP:WikiProject Sports, "Also out of scope are individual athletes. These should be under the person's relevant sports Wikiproject". I'm averaging two edits a minutes, which is well withing the rules. I believe you are well aware of WikiProject Sports not belonging to people as most of the articles are about fencers that were created by you and you no longer add the banner to new fencing articles. I'm just cleaning up your well intentioned and understandable mistake. btw... I'm not going to be regularly doing this as this is somewhat of a distraction from my normal tasks. Egads, I'm not misusing AWB. The rules say "consider opening a bot account". It doesn't say I have to and I have done bots before. Rules say "few edits a minute". What is "few"?... 2, 3, 4. Removing a Banner goes by alot faster than a normal AWB edit. I'm fixing the mistakes that you caused and in which you haven't cleaned up. As I'm not causing any problems, what is your real problem with what I'm doing?

My opinion: AWB is not misused here. 2 edits per minute is fine. Checking BgWhite's edits is obvious they manually save them after checking. BgWhite is one of the editors that have very few (if any) self-reverts. Now on the removal of WPSPORTS thing: Since it's easy to determine which page is about a person and compare this against WPSPORTS banner, I would say that a bot could do the job faster and with less effort. -- Magioladitis (talk) 21:02, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

The Wikipedia refs cannot be used because Wikipedia is not a reliable reference. Anybody can edit Wikipedia.

Facebook and twitter are not to be used as refs for the same reason, anybody can edit them and make up what they want. They are also not to be used in the external links section.

He never was on the regular season roster. Nobility guidelines say, "Have appeared in one game..." It means regular season game. It never says has been on a preseason roster. If you are going to contest a prod, don't state invalid reasons. Yea, I know how basketball articles work at AFD... A foreign player has to play professional basketball, an American having played high school basketball qualifies. A sophomore high-school basketball player was kept because he was receiving mid-level recruiting interest and local papers had done a few stories on him. My favorite was a walk-on (Indiana, Illinois... was a Big-10 school) that played 8 total minutes in his career was kept because he did play in a game. The US bias is infuriating. I did some more cleaning up. I added a reference to the prize he was nominated for. I combined all the worldcat references into one link in the external links section. Removed the reference to Wikipedia as it is not allowed as an unreliable source... anybody can edit Wikipedia. I also cleaned up the over wikilinks. Generally it is best to have only one wikilink per subject... example is you had Cologne wikilinked multiple times.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean about "added an appropriate amount of links". But, if you are referring the the orphan tag at the top, that gets added when Egbert Baque is not wikilinked on another article somewhere on WikiPedia. Here is all the articles linked to Egbert Baque.

Male Tennis Player Notability Help

I sure can help. The players should always have an ITF and ATP link on the bottom of the page, as does Thomas Kromann. Look at the ATP link and you'll notice a career won-loss record in singles and doubles. If you look at the ITF link you'll see the same thing under "main draw" tour level only. Sometimes the win-loss doesn't match the atp and itf... I don't know why. Now according to Tennis Project Guidelines a player is notable if he has EVER played in the main draw of a tour level event... whether they win or lose or whether it's doubles or singles. So those win-loss records are dead giveaways of notability. If you look at the ATP playing activity it goes year by year and if you see a win or a loss at the top you can scroll down and find the actual tournament he played in. Instead of F1 or F2 (Futures) or Ch (Challenger)...you'll see blah blah 250, blah blah 500... those are tour events. In Thomas's case you see something different. In 2012 activity you see SLO vs. DEN EAGI 1st Rd... that's a Davis Cup event and simply playing in that also make a player instantly notable. To confirm you can go to www.daviscup.com and do a player search under Denmark and his name will appear. This guy is notable per tennis guidelines.

It's not in our guidelines but I'm gonna talk to editors about it. Any new player article should really have a ref to that notability source to help out wikipedia in sorting good articles from bad. I have been trying to do that myself in the last bunch of new players I've added. I'll put this on you talk page too so you'll always be able to find it in your archives if needed. I saw your latest revert and had to laugh. Then I moved sideways to his dad, Myoma U Than Kywe and looked at the history ...

I came across this AfD and preferred to give it the benefit of the doubt given lack of English-language sources and lack of translation tools for the Burmese sources. I started expanding coverage on the awards, authors and government ministers who dish out awards to get a better feel for the area. There are huge gaps. Given the political situation, it is hard to find objective sources. But I have to agree that dumping in unsourced puff is not the way to fix the problem. I do not feel strongly about this one myself. I started Sarpay Beikman Manuscript Awards with some lists of winners, which I assumed would be mostly notable authors, sort of like winning the Booker Prize. But when I try to find enough for an article, many of the authors do not have much coverage. That may not be entirely a language problem. To win an award, at least until recently, an author had to be government-approved. Maybe these are not the best authors. Most of the Burmese authors that do have articles did not win prizes, and vice-versa. I may keep adding content in this area. Some notable authors did win prizes. No problem. The relevant guide is at WP:ELNO. Generally, social networking sites, blogs, fanzines and YouTube type sites shouldn't be in external links. Personally, if the person doesn't have a website given in the article, I don't mind one blog or social networking site. I also don't mind certain types of YouTube links, such as for a musician linking to a song of theirs.

Sorry, I meant to answer this, then I got involved in writing a coupla articles, and it slipped my mind. I'm glad to see that you've watched some of Breaking Bad and liked it enough to want more. I've never heard of Downton Abbey or the BBC's Being Human. I was aware of the SyFy channel's Being Human (which I've now discovered is based on the BBC series), but I've never seen it and know nothing about it. As for Sons of Anarchy, I saw the first episode, didn't like it, and haven't watched it since. Yes, I've finally seen The Princess Bride, and answered that question more thoroughly on my talk page.

Hi there. I PROD'ed Stian Sortevik last night, and to be honest, I didn't believe that the PROD would go through. But that was because I believed some unexperienced editors, not familiar with the notability guidelines would just remove the tag. But I didn't see this coming, one of the most experienced editors (you) removing a PROD on an not-notable footballer. Yes he is in the squad of Stabæk, but WP:NFOOTY clearly states that you have to play a match, not only be in the squad, to be notable. And for the futsal-part: futsal is like any other sport: "have participated in a major international amateur or professional competition at the highest level such as the Olympics." Qualification matches for the World Cup is not enough. I'm not going to do anything else about this article, since he will probably play when Tippeligaen starts this spring (it's WP:CRYSTAL, but I can't be arsed to take all these footballers to AfD when they will be notable in two months), but the next time you might want to know the notability guidelines before removing a PROD. American so I can understand the pain of issues with sport. Australia has freedom of panorama. I can take sport pictures here that I can't in the USA. (And then, after seeing a Commons photographer with his $1,300 camera, I went out and got one because I see enough live sports and upload enough crap pictures using my iPhone to make it worth while.) Water polo live is fun. The level of play is truly outstanding. :) I'm hoping having successfully done one team that I can get permission from others. (My goal is the Australia women's national basketball team, who have a training camp in Canberra in May.) Supervisor is giving me feedback on the Ides of March. Working through existing feedback. I need to get my abstract written and a few other things. My dissertation should pass on examination with major/minor revisions at this point. Thus, not as stressed as I could be. He was a journalist. And he does fit the criteria of Media, having worked in multiple different forms of media: television, film, commercials, and music videos, as well as journalism. He wasn't notable for a journalist. Shouldn't add banners for things they weren't notable for. Example, you wouldn't add the Golf banner to every politician. The Criminal Biography banner for politicians is a different story...

Per MOS guidelines, the archive banner only goes on a talk page that contains alot of archives. Also, you had it auto archiving every 30 days, so your talk messages would be deleted. The Talk Header template only goes on pages that have alot of debate, that are controversial subject or high profile people. Blackburn doesn't meet this guideline. He is not notable for journalism and television... banners should be removed. Getting an award for a commercial does not make one notable for TV. The archives DO hurt. Greetings BG, its the IP formerly known as Kumioko. I was also working on a task for the Persondata short description and the only way I could get it to work reasonably well was to start with the more important stuff and work down. So basically I did several groups for several things. I had a group that dealt with politicians and started with President and went down from there (I had about 200 different politician categories captured), then it would go into another group that added military stuff like General, Medal of Honor, a couple other medals like Navy Cross, and down (that had about 500 categories, then I went into A few other things like people who won a Nobel prize or about 20 other things. I was still working on it but I was up over 1500 lines of code and still working on it. I don't think its going to be an easy thing to do with the edit perfectionists out there. I got pissed at the whole situation and deleted the code (as well as the 9500 plus lines for adding infoboxes) but I thought I would tell you the thought process I had anyway in case it would help. I also noticed your comments here. I'm sad to hear that me and the work I tried to do has been reduced to the butt of a joke and sorry that they made that comment in general. Yup, your work is the gift that keeps on giving :). It made me mad. I wrote several drafts of responses that were none to nice. I slept on it, calmed down and then told the person to ($_%#? Off.

I do a few things different when I need a change of pace for a few hours. Most are winding down. So, going thru category by category will be becoming my new change of pace routine. A couple questions about editing

Greetings Bgwhite, per the discussion on my talk page I was hoping I could ask a couple questions so I don't have to keep beating up ACdixon with all my stupid questions. I have had quite a few so I figure if I spread them out a little I won't burn out one editor. :-) I am finding editing to be quite difficult frankly and am gathering quite a few notes/questions on my user page so I figure I better ask around and get some out of the way. It seems like the more experienced users do things intuitively that aren't necessarily written in "Da rules" (sorry for the Fairly odd parents reference, couldn't resist) anywhere for us new folks.

1. How do I add the ability of seeing persondata and why are the instructions so difficult? Why not just add a checkbox under my preferences or gadgets or something? I think I have followed the directions but still don't see it.
2. What are more important and what takes precedence, Policies, Guidelines, Essays, other stuff?
3. Can anyone add the WikiProject banner for a project? Do you need to be a member of the project? I added a couple and thought I should ask before I incur the wrath of some unhappy editor. No offense intended but that seems to happen quite a bit around here.
4. Is there anything special I need to do about duplicative ones (Biography and Military work group; Military history and Biography task force for example seems sorta duplicative to me).
5. Why do some project banners add red links like Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of the American Civil War? I found several but this is just an example. My guess is that Kumioko editor meant to do them but didn't have a chance to before they Retired based on this page: User:Kumioko/WikiProject category tracking.
6. Is there a standard naming policy for parameter names of things like WikiProject templates. For example, some say (needs-image, needs photo, photo-needed, with and without the - or with spaces, etc.)? I assume the answer is no and I think thats very confusing for new users.

No problem in asking me questions. Ask as many as you want. I've got my little niche in Wikipedia land. I know or stumbled onto things in my niche. But, go out into something else in Wikia and I can become lost. Yes, there is a learning curve around here. The best things you can do is don't do to many things, don't go to quickly and pick an area you want to explore. Ohh... and ask questions.

1. I don't have anything to "see" persondata. I use a tool to enter vales into persondata and fix other errors. A very easy tool is, Wikipedia:Persondata-o-matic. The idiot wonderful computer people updated yesterday the version of MediaWiki that Wikipedia uses. The update has broken user scripts, so for right now, you can't see persondata the way you are trying. It's broken alot of things I use too.
2. Usually it is Policy and then Guidelines. Essays usually don't contain any rules. Some essays are just a person's thoughts and others contain useful information. Each WikiProject may have their own set of rules.
3. The Biography and Military Projects are separate. Each Project is in their own separate universe. Setting the military work group in Biography will put the article in a special spot in Biography land. The only things that overlap are "listas" and "need-infobox". If it is a Biography article, listas should only go into the Biography banner. I usually put need-infobox outside of all the the banners using the {{Infobox requested}} template.
4. There shouldn't be any red links from banners. As you said, either Kumioko was planning to do it or he made a mistake.
5. There is no standard naming policy. However....

1. Wikipedia:Talk page layout is the policy on how the talk page is laid out.
2. WikiProject Biography is the first Project Banner to go on the page of living people. After that, I usually put them in alphabetical order.
3. I usually put the parameters in a banner the way they are ordered in the template. Template:Wikiproject Biography has living first and class second, so that is the way I order them. I use a tool that puts listas last, but otherwise I try and follow the order.
4. I don't put spaces in between things. For example, class=start and not class = start. Listas requires no spaces, so I do it for everything else. Kumioko and I did it because we are computer people and spaces makes the files bigger. Old habits die hard.
5. needs-photo= is the standard way, so I put it that way. However, for biographies, I put it outside the banners in the {{Image requested}} template. I know if the Biography has the musician work group, the image requested template looks like: {{Image requested|musicians}}. Image requested allows you to make multiple photo requests.
6. I use a tool called AutoHotkey to fill in things. If I press the windows key + "s", it prints out "|sports-work-group=yes|sports-priority=low". My script is at User:Bgwhite/AutoHotkey. I also have a notepad open so I can copy paste somethings I can't remember.... all the different parameters for Image requested for example.

I didn't learn things overnight and I still learn things. Don't worry about making mistakes, because you will. Just try the best you can. Bgwhite (talk) 23:50, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
