DYK nomination of Frankfort and Cincinnati Railroad[edit]

Hello! Your submission of Frankfort and Cincinnati Railroad at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 20:16, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure that there is anything interesting in this for DYK; if the current situation with U S Rail were resolved, there might be something there. I will definitely have an interesting hook if I write the A&R Line and J.K. Line articles. --NE2 20:28, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Abe Lincoln DYK[edit]

Hey Bedford, I saw your comment about Abe Lincoln DYK's at Wikipedia talk:Did you know/Darwin Day 2009 and was wondering if you have done any? Grsz11 00:12, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I did six. See Template_talk:Did_you_know#Lincoln_Boyhood_National_Memorial.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 00:14, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Very well done. I think I'll do Petersen House if I can find the time. I think there is enough that it can stand alone from Ford's Theatre. Grsz11 00:28, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Kentucky Railway Museum nom at DYK[edit]

Hi Bedford. I'm nearly able to tick your multi-article nomination, but spotted a couple of Stub tags: Frankfort and Cincinnati Model 55 Rail Car has one on the Talk page, and New Sherwood Hotel has one at the foot of the article (the Talk page assessment is Start-class). Pls could you arrange for these to be removed, then I can pass the hook. Thanks, Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 20:28, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy XXVII[edit]

Howdy,

How are you I have not gotten to talk to you in a while. I'm currently thinking about running for a Coordinator's position in the Military History Wikiproject. I know you are one and I respect that very highly, could you please give my some pointers? If I run I would like to be the best Coordinator that I can be.

Lord R. Oliver I His Lordship's Court 00:59, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You are probably not well known enough to get enough votes. Also, unless you like to review articles for A-class, which requires an amazing amount of anal retentiveness, you'd be happier not being so. The coords are becoming akin to a high school clique, and I've lost a lot of respect for many of my fellow coords. I'm almost embarrassed to be one.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 01:12, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Threatened Deletions Over On WikiCommons[edit]

We have a problem over on Wikicommons concerning the US Government Images we have over there.

I got this warning today:Commons:Deletion requests/File:U.S. Military Academy COA.png that because the USAIOH/USACMH images come with a Permission that includes a prohibition against commercial use, they are not free enough for inclusion on Wikicommons.

I posted a reply over there, but we may need to have others from this group post like responses or else lose our images over there. I think we will need to have a fulltime official presence over there to protect the images used for our projects.

Howdy XXVIII[edit]

Howdy,

I thought you would say that and I am glad you did. It gets quite sad when elections become more of a clique vote more than a vote for someone that you think can do a great job. Thanks so much and Have a great Day! Lord R. Oliver I His Lordship's Court 23:45, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy XXX[edit]

Howdy,

I need your help, do you think that this article in My Sandbox is ready for DYK.

Possibly with the following hooks:

...that Texas State Representative Tommy Merritt co-authored the bill which added "Under God" to the Texas Pledge of Allegiance?

or

...that Texas State Representative Tommy Merritt was one of the "Gang of 11" that helped remove Tom Craddick as the Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives and replace him with Joe Straus?

Lord R. Oliver I His Lordship's Court 19:39, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks and Have a Great Day! Lord R. Oliver I His Lordship's Court 20:38, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your new article of Australia and the American Civil War you just submitted to DYK fits right in with my new article. --Doug Coldwell talk 12:47, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The first thing you two will have to do is figure out whether Australia favoured the Unionists or Confederates, as I see your articles differ on that score. Gatoclass (talk) 14:14, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the reference by Baldwin Last Flag Down it says on page 85:
--Doug Coldwell talk 14:36, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
My source may be a case of history revisionism. See [2]. We might have to say it is debatable whose side most Australians were for.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 20:00, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I changed mine to read: While at Melbourne, Australia, Captain Waddell obtained additional men and supplies. That leaves out which side Australia (as a whole) favored. --Doug Coldwell talk 20:17, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I made my ambigious as well. Thanks to Gatoclass for seeing the discrepancy.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 20:37, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just throwing these suggestions out for you to consider. Your DYK hook is good already, so perhaps these would not work as well. Its up to you.

--Doug Coldwell talk 00:56, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I made the map route in the article showing the travels of the Shenandoah based on a map in the front of the book Last Flag Down by Baldwin. On my browser when I triple click it gives me a close-up showing the dates (I put in) on the route.--Doug Coldwell talk 13:10, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I saw it. Nice, but you wiped out part of North America and left the "c" out of Arctic.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 13:22, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Glad you caught Ar c tic. Yes, I guess I did miss North American. My error - not sure why I did that!(?). I'll see what I can do.--Doug Coldwell talk 14:35, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Added North America back in and corrected "Arctic." Look things over and if you see anything else that needs correcting, let me know. I also added a bit concerning that on August 2 Captain Waddell got word from an English ship that the American Civil War had actually ended some four months prior.--Doug Coldwell talk 16:58, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Do you think the article would have a snowball chance ........ of becoming a G.A.?--Doug Coldwell talk 22:47, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Better than a snowball's. A little bit more about its early history, and some of the stuff I put about it in the Australia article, and it stands a very good chance of GA. BTWm what do you think of that cartoon I found.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 22:55, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Neat-o! All the way around.--Doug Coldwell talk 23:44, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have started on improving the article further with a G.A. status in mind and improved the map I made. I now show the route as closer to the North American coast line. I believe before I was too much out into the Pacific Ocean. I will be working next on expanding the Conclusion of the American Civil War#Surrender of CSS Shenandoah (November 6) section with some of the material from your article. Also I have Baldwin's book Last Flag Down in front of me to find additional material. Later I will try to get some earlier history of major battles in 1865 that lead to the Surrender of General Lee on April 9. I will try to add at least a couple more paragraphs in front of Conclusion of the American Civil War#Capture of Anderson's corps (April 6) section.--Doug Coldwell talk 14:45, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Check out Blue & Gray at Sea: Naval Memoirs of the Civil War It has Waddell's log of his voyage, and includes various latitudes and longitudes of his voyage.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 18:06, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reference. I did a start on expanding the section.--Doug Coldwell talk 19:21, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That reference is excellent. I may have to study it for a couple of days before I add some more to that section. Thanks again for letting me know.--Doug Coldwell talk 20:20, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No problem; I got a little use of it, and I'm sure you can get more.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 21:03, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Did I nominate correctly?--Doug Coldwell talk 00:40, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Looks right, but you still need to EXPAND your intro to the article. It needs to be 5x what it is now.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 00:52, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Great. Thanks for hints on the lead. Worked on it and expanded the lead. Does it still need to be longer or do you think this will work? --Doug Coldwell talk 13:27, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That should do it.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 13:56, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Neat-o! Thanks for all your suggestions and help.--Doug Coldwell talk 20:05, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Great! Boy am I glad I asked you. It looks very good to me. I noticed you are getting a lot of action on your article since it became a DYK. I hope I get that much action -IF (big "if") it becomes a DYK.--Doug Coldwell talk 13:11, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have added a Comment to the DYK template, which I hope will be encouragement for someone to select your ALT2, as I feel yours is the best and simplest and easiest to understand. Thanks again for the Alt.--Doug Coldwell talk 20:45, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. Good luck on your G.A. submission of your article. I have been getting a lot of excellent advice from User:Hlj as you can see by his submissions User talk:Doug Coldwell#Conclusion of the American Civil War.--Doug Coldwell talk 13:14, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ping! See User talk:Doug Coldwell#Conclusion of the American Civil War Kresock comments at bottom.--Doug Coldwell talk 12:30, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
They selected your alternate hook for the DYK I submitted. It is in the next Queue and will appear tomorrow morning. Thanks for the excellent hook. I was hoping yours would be selected, because in my opinion it was by far the best. I even added a Comment showing additional references for your hook to encourage it to be selected. Read over your article and could only find one small misspelling. Hope the additional reviews go well. User:Kresock and User:Hlj helped me a lot and may be good future ACW sources.--Doug Coldwell talk 20:42, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed they used mine. Thanks.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 21:43, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Done It passed to GA status. Thanks for all your help.--Doug Coldwell talk 17:56, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy XXXI[edit]

Howdy,

Hey do you think you could assess the article Mark Perrin Lowrey I made a request for its assessment, but those assessments sometimes don't get checked very often. Thanks so Much and Have a Great Day! Lord R. Oliver I His Lordship's Court 23:08, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for assessing the article, and what do I need to do to meet the criteria for the Coverage and Accuracy? Thanks! Lord R. Oliver I His Lordship's Court 23:21, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh and thank you for the advice on moving an article to the mainspace. Lord R. Oliver I His Lordship's Court 23:22, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It just needs some more info; I'm not sure if its out there, but it looks a bit too small for B.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 23:24, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Okay thanks I'll begin working on that. Lord R. Oliver I His Lordship's Court 23:31, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I had known of some interesting information, but I guess I either forgot about it or just decided to leave it out. I have now put it in to the article Mark Perrin Lowrey see how you like it. Lord R. Oliver I His Lordship's Court 23:49, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy XXXII[edit]

Howdy,

Could you please help me, again (sorry)? Which DYK question do you think would be best for the article in My Sandbox:

...while in a battle Joseph Revere (pictured) grandson of the rider ,who yelled "The British are coming!", overwhelmed by news, rode to his men, and scrame "Rearward!", causing him to be court-martialed?

or

...that Joseph W. Revere (pictured) ,grandson of Paul Revere, was knighted by Queen Isabella II of Spain in the Order of Isabella the Catholic for saving Spanish citizens while he was in the Mexican Army? Lord R. Oliver I His Lordship's Court 23:34, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Both are decent; suggest both hooks when you propose it.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 23:42, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ok Thanks And Have a Great Day! Lord R. Oliver I His Lordship's Court 23:45, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy XXXIII[edit]

Howdy,

I took your advice and made my article in a Sandbox and then moved it into mainspace, but I kinda messed up. I created the Sandbox on February 7 and so then edit history for the article makes it look like it was created on February 7 instead of on February 22, and this could put a damper on this article becoming a DYK article. Do you know anything that I could do? Lord R. Oliver I His Lordship's Court 20:49, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It should be counted on the day it was moved to mainspace, so you should be good. You might make a comment on when it was moved to userspace, and you're good.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 00:49, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why was First 100 days of Barack Obama's Presidency unusable?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 00:54, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It was old and all hooks had problems. It was past time for it to go.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 01:44, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have received clearer feedback on hook problems in the past. Oh well. I guess it is partly my fault.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 05:49, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Can I point out that in terms of the project, getting this article to the main page would help on two fronts. 1.) most Obama-related DYKs do tremendously well at generating hits for the main page; 2.) This article could benefit from the attention of main page exposure. I had only seen negative issues with two of the four hooks so I did not do anything because I was doing my taxes, which I just turned in yesterday. Is there any way we could come up with an agreeable hook and get this on the main page. I see this as one of the more important articles I have created for DYK and the most important to have problems with getting to the main page.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 23:09, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Treaty of Fort Wayne (1803)[edit]

Hey Bedford! maybe you can get a DYK out of Treaty of Fort Wayne (1803). I am not sure it is long enough though. Charles Edward (Talk) 13:57, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You might get one out of Yellow Jackets (Indiana) too. Charles Edward (Talk) 00:38, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Australia and the American Civil War[edit]

Updated DYK query On February 23, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Australia and the American Civil War, which you created or substantially expanded. Well done Victuallers (talk) 21:14, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see a credit on the article's Talk page when the article was a DYK on Feb 23. Here is a tool that shows how many hits it had world-wide on February 23 and 24 of a total 3,700 times. No wonder your article got so much action!--Doug Coldwell talk 20:18, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Australia and the American Civil War[edit]

Great job on the Australia and the American Civil War article. I have had this sort of article on my to-do list for ages but you have done it better than I could. As a matter of interest, some of the coastal forts in Adelaide built to protect it against the possible Russian invasion the article refers to are still there. --Roisterer (talk) 02:48, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Very interesting...If a new account wrote that I would have assumed it was a hoax. Do you have anymore on Aus in the ACW topics? YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 00:24, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Nope. However, I've always had a fondness for Australia, and I hope to get the Aussie Triple Crown, so I thought this would a great way to attain it.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 01:07, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Name that soldier[edit]

Hey Bedford. I just finished a major rewrite of John L. Helm. I asked a guy to copyedit it before I send it to FAC. One of his comments was that he'd like to know a little more about the federal authorities who arrested Helm during the Civil War. All I can find is a couple of references to "Colonel Knox". Do you have any idea who this refers to? He would have been stationed in the area of Hardin County in late 1861. Acdixon (talk contribs count) 13:07, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
