Marcellus Boss

Thanks for adding Marc Boss to the Columbus, Kansas page as a notable resident. I remember his law offices on the northwest corner of the town square as a teenager in the early sixties but I didn't realize that he had been Governor of Guam. Cuprum17 (talk) 17:05, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

I am glad to have shared that! I find the Governors of US territories like Guam and American Samoa are too often forgotten, and unfortunately I could not find much information on Mr. Boss. I you know of any source of information on him, please add it to the article. かんぱい! Scapler (talk) 17:43, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Bank of American Samoa

Hi Scapler, Why did you state that Gov. Woodruff? established the Bank of American Samoa when it was established in 1914, and he was governor from 1927-1929? Regards,Acad Ronin (talk) 19:58, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

It was actually established under Stephen Victor Graham, not Woodruff. Anyway, I changed it to show the Governor because, quite simply, the article was incorrect before. According to the American Samoan Government and their Chief Historian, the Bank of American Samoa was actually established on July 25, 1929, not in 1914. My source is a historical report by the island government here on page 186. かんぱい! Scapler (talk) 20:05, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
I have fixed the dates given in the article and sourced them now. かんぱい! Scapler (talk) 20:06, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
Check p.129 of the same document. Also, Margaret Mead reports meeting the manager of the bank in 1925. Lastly, A. M. Noble, in Codification of the regulations and orders for the government of American Samoa gives the date as 1914.[1] If you go to p.20 of that document you will again see the 1914 date, together with the rules governing the bank. Acad Ronin (talk) 20:26, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
It appears the situation was more complicated than I had first thought. Thank you for the correction and citations to show me where I was wrong. You have improved and clarified the article greatly with your changes. かんぱい! Scapler (talk) 21:36, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Grab some glory, and a barnstar

Hi, I'd like to invite you to participate in the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. In May, about 30 editors helped remove the {{copyedit}} tag from 1175 articles. The backlog is still over 7500 articles, and extends back to the beginning of 2008! We really need your help to reduce it. Copyediting just a couple articles can qualify you for a barnstar. Serious copyeditors can win prestigious and exclusive rewards. See the event page for more information. And thanks for your consideration. ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 15:19, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Your opinion regarding Rick Scott article would be great

Hi Scapler, I've been trying to propose new content for the Rick Scott article, and this past weekend I hit a snag. I had been working with the only other editor active on the page recently, and then late last week I proposed a small expansion to one section. The response from this editor was just that he didn't see why it was important to add more details, although the new citations I had located were welcome, without the additional information. I explained my reasoning for the expansion, and his response was a little perplexing -- he's interested in seeing different information added, but indifferent to this. If someone else is OK with adding my material, then he's OK with it. (That whole conversation is here.) But nobody else is around, I think my request was too involved for the Wikipedia Help desk (which I tried yesterday), and with my potential COI, I am very cautious about making direct edits without clear consensus. I hope you can take a look at it, and if you agree that it's suitable material, please add it or weigh in on the Talk page. Of course, if you don't think it should be there, I'll work with that, too. Thanks. Thirteenth Florida (talk) 16:24, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Actually, I worked with someone on the Help desk to accomplish this, so never mind! However, I have proposed another relatively significant change on the Rick Scott Talk page, so if you are so inclined to look at it and give your opinion, that would be great. Thanks. Chinese Economic Reform Copyedit and picture adding request

Can you please help copyedit the article, add pictures, and convert it to Harvnb format? I am not very knowledgable in copyediting and will try to help, but will likely not be of much help. I think I've pretty much covered the scope of the whole article and it may be ready for a GA and FA soon, after which I will need your help. Regards.Teeninvestor (talk) 17:53, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Thank you. Your help is much appreciated. Also, if you have time, can you also help add some pictures to Great Divergence and copyedit it (it is another article I recently overhauled). As for Chinese economic reform, I'm planning a GA and soon FA nomination of both as soon as copyediting and converting is done (I've added a few pics).Teeninvestor (talk) 18:18, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
No problem. Bafflegab 1978 has done most of the work already though. Just convert Econ reform article to harvnb format, go through both articles again, and add a few pics.Teeninvestor (talk) 22:20, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
I think this format is better because it lets you find the sources faster. I mean this article is no econ history of China, so converting shouldn't be that hard, lol. On the other hand, this article's GAN is really slow; I was the verge of asking the editor who did the GAN for econ history of China, but he wasn't there. Can you find a GA reviewer (or even do it yourself, but i dont think thats allowed)?Teeninvestor (talk) 21:51, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
If you really want work to do, copyedit and add pictures to Qing conquest theory, lol.Teeninvestor (talk) 15:42, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

Stats
If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the May 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, your word totals are cumulative for barnstars (not the leaderboard). Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars.

You've prodded Benik Afobe as it's unreferenced. I actually have a draft in my userspace following the recent AfD. I think there's enough to show notability (I added several references post-AfD), but not wanting to push my luck I was going to wait until he'd played a professional game for Arsenal. Any thoughts on whether I should just move it back over this unreferenced article? Fences&Windows 02:12, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

Your draft certainly has enough references to satisfy me as to notability. Please do move it over, as I did not tag for notability, merely for the standard that all BLP have references. Your version would certainly fix that problem. かんぱい! Scapler (talk) 02:20, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, it's now live. Black Kite, the deleting admin, agreed that it meets the GNG. Hopefully it won't be blitzed as a recreation of a deleted article. Fences&Windows 21:25, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
If it is, I'll be there to help defend it, since that would simply be a misuse of CSD. The new article is nowhere close to the one that was deleted; good work. かんぱい! Scapler (talk) 00:57, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

A little help resolving a dispute

Hello.

I seem to have gotten myself into a little dispute with a friend of mine, that of User:New Age Retro Hippie, regarding the article List of BioShock characters.

Here's a link to the old revision of the article in question; [2]

And here's the current revision; [3]

The argument, in it's most simple terms, is that only the most notable characters in the game warrant a mention in the article (whether or not you've played the game isn't a problem, don't worry. There is also some additional info on the talk page). He claims the Secondary and Minor characters aren't "notable" enough to warrant a mention in the article. We've discussed this in full, though I think I've reached a dead end.

The first paragraph in the link was the first message he sent me User talk:82.1.127.95#Characters in BioShock.

Here's my reply User talk:New Age Retro Hippie#Re:Characters in BioShock.

The second paragraph in the link to my talkpage was his reply to my message.

I've noticed the contributions you've made regarding video game characters on Wikipedia, such as Nathan Drake and I believe we need help from someone expierienced on the video games wikiProject in resolving the dispute. At the minute it is just me and New Age Retro Hippie who are discussing the matter, and I believe we've hit a stalemate (to be honest we keep pretty much keep sending each other 30-paragraph messages and it is quickly descending into the WP:TLDR category). I believe another person's opinion on the matter would be a major help in resolving this dispute. Thank you. (82.1.127.95 (talk) 23:02, 3 September 2010 (UTC))

Opinion polls

You recently added material on opinion polls to a political candidate.[4] First, it doesn't seem that common to include polls in congressional races. Can you point to three articles about House incumbents with the same info? (I'll save you some time - not a single member of the Florida delegation has polling data in their article). Second, considering that there are elections every two years, and each campaign may have multiple polls, and that the polls are generally meaningless trivia after the election is over, it doesn't seem like a good practice to include them. Third, I see you yourself rewrote the article on the other candidate, yet you have not included the same information in that article. Altogether, I don't see a good reason for that material which is why I deleted it.   Will Beback  talk  07:49, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

Fair enough; your rationale makes sense; I had just forgotten to add it into the other article. However, I had assumed that the information had been lost in the warring over inclusion of the latest ad. As long as it conforms with standard practice not to include it, that's good enough for me. かんぱい! Scapler (talk) 12:03, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

The Great Band Era

I see you removed my edit of "The Great Band Era" entry. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Great_Band_Era&oldid=390353629 )

Admittedly, I made a very common newbie mistake by not citing or linking to my source. In this case, my source was the actual album box set and the dust jacket of the bonus lp in question. As I have found, many sources on the internet only cite there being 10 lps in the collection, and the only mention I have found anywhere so far to list a bonus lp is an ebay sale that lists a completely different bonus lp. Apparently, they produced more than one variation. ( http://cgi.ebay.com/Great-Band-Era-Readers-Digest-11-LP-Set-COMPLETE-/400142246780 )

As this is my first edit to anything on Wikipeda, I want it to be accurate and want to do things by the book. Any suggestions or tips you can offer would be very much appreciated.

Hello Scapler!
Our Liz has had a lot to deal with in Her reign, the least of which should be some otherwise ordinary bloke who briefly made the the news and then disappeared into obscurity again.
Your thoughts about this?--Shirt58 (talk) 13:45, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

I think, given international coverage of the incident, we should at least have an article on the event, if not the man. In fact, it would probably be best to have an event article and merge the bio into that, since he is definitely a one-event notable. かんぱい! Scapler (talk) 15:10, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
Agree completely. But what to call the page it should be moved to? 1981 Queens Birthday incident? 1981 Trooping of the Colour incident? --Shirt58 (talk) 11:21, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

Minor planet redirects

Could you please explain why you're redirecting old articles to newer ones? Thanks.--SarekOfVulcan (talk) 20:54, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

Yep. The articles in question were ones I had created on asteroids back when those asteroids did not have names. Some of those later got a name, and someone made duplicate articles of them, so I was redirecting the old articles, arranged simply by numbers, to the new ones with the correct new names. かんぱい! Scapler (talk) 20:58, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
Ah, I see. Do you think it would be better to delete the newer ones and move the older ones to the new titles, so the edit history is retained at the primary article, or is there generally not enough history to bother keeping? --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 21:07, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
I would say there is not enough history worth keeping. They were, on average, only a sentence long, so the newer articles are actually longer, if only by about one sentence. かんぱい! Scapler (talk) 21:15, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
Fair enough. Thanks for the cleanup! --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 21:20, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update.

Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join!

Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive.

Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. Thanks very much for participating in the Drive, and see you at the finish line!

November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

We have reached the end of our fourth backlog elimination drive. Thanks to all who participated.

Stats

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive graphs
  • 58 people signed up for this drive. Of these, 48 people participated in the drive.
  • Although we did not eliminate the months we planned to (January, February, and March 2009; and August, September, and October 2010), we did reduce the backlog by 627 articles (11.2%), which was over our goal of 10%.
  • 49 awards will go out to 33 of 48 participants. Check out the complete list of barnstar winners here.

Barnstars

If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the September 2010 backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). These roll-over words count as credit towards earning barnstars, except for leaderboard awards. We will be delivering these barnstars within the next couple of weeks.

Our next drive is scheduled for January 2011. In the meantime, please consider helping out at the Wikification drive or any of the other places where help with backlogs is needed.

Thank you for participating in the last 2010 backlog elimination drive! We look forward to seeing you in January!

re:Eagle Scout

Hey, are you going to TNAW?(Tipisa Native American Weekend) We could meet up or something. :o Blake (Talk·Edits) 21:15, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately, college keeps me too busy to be involved in Scouts right now, though post-grad I want to sign up as a leader wherever I end up. Glad to see that you actually are in the Order and that I didn't just assume incorrectly lol. Just knew that if you were, Volusia and Brevard County are both Tipisa. かんぱい! GOCE drive news

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats.

Participation
GOCE January 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now.

Progress report

We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. Currently, we have eliminated 375 articles from the queue, so if each participant copy edits four more articles, we will reach that goal.

Thank you for participating in the January 2011 drive. We anticipate it will be another big success!

Online Ambassadors

I saw the quality of your contributions at DYK and clicked on over to your user page and was pretty impressed. Would you be interested in helping with the WP:Online_Ambassadors program? It's really a great opportunity to help university students become Wikipedia contributers. I hope you apply to become an ambassador, Sadads (talk) 00:11, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

I shall look into it; the idea is very intriguing. かんぱい! Scapler (talk) 00:06, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

WikiProject Fictional Characters

Hi, I was wondering if you wanted to comment on the possible creation of a "WikiProject Fictional Characters" here. It is currently lacking comments, and more importantly, possible members. Blake (Talk·Edits) 22:13, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

I like the idea, and would be willing to be involved. かんぱい! Scapler (talk) 00:07, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
Well, could you say that at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Fictional characters? Thanks Blake (Talk·Edits) 00:08, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
The WikiProject's finished, for now. I have proposed we create a basic style. See here. Harry Blue5 (talk) 16:49, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
Btw... you wouldn't perchance be a troper, would you? The "That Other Page" thing seems strangely familiar... Harry Blue5 (talk) 16:50, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
