Geographical coordinates[edit]

Please don't over-simplify geographical coordinates by rounding them too aggressively, as you did in a few recent edits. Keep in mind that one tenth of a degree, in north-south direction, is still more than 10 km, so by rounding to a single digit after the comma, you risk being several kilometers off. For small places (villages etc.), coordinates need to be given with at least two digits after the comma, better three (so the marker can be placed reasonably exactly in the centre of a place); if given in terms of minutes and seconds of the arc, seconds should be used (an arcminute is about 2 km, an arcsecond is about 30 m.) Recognition of South Sudan page[edit]

Well, I'm one of them as I just don't see the need for this article. I feel that it is a misguided attempt to jump on the International Recognition of Kosovo bandwagon, and there is really no comparison between the two - Kosovo is disputed and so it's definitely useful to document which side of the fence each country sits, but with South Sudan every country is going to recognise (or at least will not be opposed to its independence). All we're doing is documenting how efficient their foreign ministries and media outlets are, which I don't think is of much use to anyone. And because not all countries recognise in the same way, or with the same media fanfare, there is a risk that the list is incomplete and out-of-date. Bazonka (talk) 09:09, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry if you feel that I'm picking on you. I'm not; this isn't personal. I just don't agree with all of your suggestions. That's how Wikipedia works. Spending a lot of time on something doesn't necessarily make it a worthwhile pursuit.

As you can see from the thread above, yes I have questioned the need for the International recognition of South Sudan article, and I did participate in the AfD discussion to that effect (which isn't quite the same thing as "trying to delete" it). Whilst this AfD didn't go the way I wanted it to, I still want the article to be of the best quality. It does feel kind of awkward when the person that does not "see a need for the article" also does not see a need for template use in the same article. This isn't a "feeling", it is just how it looks on my end. In the past I have encountered people who intentionally sabotaged progress in articles only to seek to get the said articles deleted later on. Please do not take this personally as this had been a frequent experience for me. I am not saying you are like this - it is just that this is the kind of stuff that was most frustrating.

When someone puts days of work into something they of course expect their work to be properly reviewed and not dismissed on first sight. Honestly I was expecting something like "it looks OK but has a few problems" rather than a full fledged opposition. I am willing to compromise, you are not. That is how things are conducted on Wikipedia normally where compromise is the norm.

There are a few things to consider here. Firstly, should the International recognition of South Sudan article exist at all? I have my doubts as to its need, since recognition is largely a formality, and all countries have already de facto recognised South Sudan. But it looks as though it is going to stay, at least for the time being. So, second point: do I want to hinder improvement to the article and get it deleted? Certainly not - I'm not into that sort of machiavellian scheme that you've encountered before. I'd much rather see a good quality unnecessary article than a poor quality one. But having said that, if it is going to be deleted, then I wouldn't want people wasting their time over it.

I have absolutely no problem with anything that makes editing articles easier, so in principle I am not against your table. But we must remember that the readability of an article is of greater importance than editability. This is where my problem lay - I felt that your table was unclear and took the focus away from the main theme of the article. You'll be happy to know that your new flaggy version is much better. I'll write more comments on the specifics of this on the relevant Talk page (but not yet - other things to do).

I am very pleased that you liked it. I would be happy to address any concerns you may have about the structure to make it as easy as possible for the reader. My goal is to create the template structure for general use on Wikipedia and not just for the South Sudan article. Articles like List of diplomatic missions of France could certainly use such a structured table (with a few modifications) to display why is it more significant for France to have an Embassy in Brussels than an Embassy in Peru (for instance as you might know France has 3 diplomatic missions (that I know of) in Brussels - one for regular diplomatic contact, one for NATO HQ, one for European Commission (EU)). This is more the reason to make the structure easier to follow even more.

I am working on making the code for the templates easier to follow. You can compare {{Recognition of Country/Template/FRA}} and {{Recognition of Country/Template/France}} if you like to see the difference. This change will not influence the actual look of the table itself but it will make it possible to pick organizations to show and others to hide. This will allow the possibility to hide irrelevant organizations when needed. As a result though the table may look like a mess when it is time to flip from one template style to the other.

File:Prevailing world religions map.png[edit]

Dear user Bazonka,

Could this world religious map be retouched so that South Sudan is shown to be Christian (Catholic or Protestant) and "other"--as in African tribal religions. This map for South Sudan is more accurate here for the religious situation in South Sudan although its not accurate for other parts of Africa like West Africa. South Sudan would be a striped area in the wiki map then for 2 or more religions--but definitely not Islam. What do you think? Just curious. I am not familiar with adjusting maps but you seem to be. I gave it stripes for Catholicism and natural religion. I decided not to add protestant stripes - no other country is marked as having three prevailing religions. If you think that perhaps I should replace the Catholic stripes with Protestant ones, then please let me know.

Thank you. Doh! What a fool I was not to see that "nature" was natural African tribal religions here. I thought it fell under 'other' but that's OK. Thank you again for your kind help. No one has the correct statistics for South Sudan right now but I believe it has more Tribal religions than Christians...but with all these Christian missionaries, its possible that the Christian portion will grow one day. All I know is that the Catholic and Anglican church are the main Christian religions practised there. Well, Catholic and Tribal Religion is fine. Bering Sea "Donut hole"[edit]

1. The editor who added that sentence has not edited since 2009. 2. I have wondered about the phrase myself. A Google search confirms that it refers to a section of international water in the west-central Bering sea. Prior to 1994, this area was heavily overfished, and a 1994 treaty came too late - the fishery has not recovered in the intervening years. 3. Tho there is a lot of information but there are not a lot of unambiguously reliable sources, so i have not put anything in the article yet. 4. Mexico[edit]

Mexico is in the list with this reference: [1]. It does not specifically refer to recognition, but it is fairly clear that that's what they've done. On the subjectivity of 'Relevance'[edit]

Mr. Bazonka, you have repeatedly and arbitratily reverted my contributions on the following article based solely on your concept of "relevance". Would you care for explaining what do you mean by "relevant" and why would such references as the "most populated landlocked country", "largest country in Southeastern Europe" and "smallest republic in the world" be more "relevant" than "the largest/smallest Portuguese-speaking country"? Would you mind telling me and the other 236.1 million Portuguese native speakers why are our community and heritage "hardly relevant" in your understanding?

Twice is not exactly "repeatedly". I think that a number of the notes in the article are unnecessary, but yours seemed excessively so. Remember that the article is about geographical land area, therefore notes relating to the countries' locations e.g. "largest country in Southeastern Europe" seem relevant. "Largest country in the Arab world" is less so, although you could argue that the Arab world is a contiguous unit, and so sort of a geographical area. It's not quite the same as the Portuguese-speaking countries, which are dispersed across the globe. There needs to be some limit to what we do and don't include - where should we draw the line? "Largest Indonesian speaking country" or "Smallest country with a McDonald's"? I have nothing against Portugal or the Portuguese language. Bazonka (talk) 20:06, 18 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
