Do not revert Infobox South India

This is not an irrelevant parameter... People should also look at largest metropolitan area rather than largest cities... it has its own unique status... so stop reverting edits

Thanks

Wikimania in Atlanta!

Hi! I noticed your involvement on U.S. South-related articles, categories and WikiProjects, and I wanted to let you know about a bid we're formulating to get next year's Wikimania held in Atlanta! If you would like to help, be sure to sign your name to the "In Atlanta" section of the Southeast team portion of the bid if you're in town, or to the "Outside Atlanta" section if you still want to help but don't live in the city or the suburbs. If you would like to contribute more, please write on my talk page, the talk page of the bid, or join us at the #wikimania-atlanta IRC chat on freenode.org. Have a great day!

P.S. While this is a template for maximum efficiency, I would appreciate a note on my talk page so I know you got the message, and what you think. This is time-sensitive, so your urgent cooperation is appreciated. :) Mike H. I did "That's hot" first! 08:38, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

South India

Hi... Anna Univ is the world's largest univ in terms of number of students. I don't know the website I saw this.. hence I didn't add. Anyway it's important to have that section in the article right? So I reverted back that last edit of urs... Feel free to comment.. Mugunth(ping me!!!,contribs) 01:24, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

"Many automobile manufacturing units are located in Chennai while several public manufacturing heavy industries are located in Bangalore. " -- This wording should be changed...What do u say? I agree that "many" and "several" industries are there.. But don't u think that wordings are not proper?

Anyway, a great work done on a formerly featured article candidate... Should I say that we've to push this somehow to make it featured? Mugunth(ping me!!!,contribs) 01:27, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

South India

I would like to know the reason behind reverting my edits on article about South India with out any discussion and citations. --yny (talk) 14:47, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

I am also in the process of cleaning up the article and to this I added the links and started writing the article, and I don't see any reason my edits are reverted back with out proper discussion. I would like you to revert it to my edition and make changes after having discussion.

--yny (talk) 15:03, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

I am impressed by your contribution to WP, but it definitely not fair to revoke all of our contributions without any notice, you can refer to the Discussion page and follow the history of the article to understand the flow of the thought process for this article. I did not see your changes as cleaning up, you have reverted it back to one of the older versions of this article which has been thoroughly discussed and lots of changes have been made. So cleaning up this article needs understanding of the feelings of all the contributers who have vested considerable amount of their time. Everybody is trying to put the facts and enrich and share the knowledge. Gone are days where one editor contributes (rather controls) entire encyclopedia with one dimension, now its the era of distributed knowledge where one should understand and appreciate underlying interest and most of all the truth in the article. I don't seem to violate any of the guide lines, I provided links and started adding stuff, of course it takes time to complete my stuff.

I would strongly recommend you to go through the discussion page and follow the discussion on South India. (FYI: My user ID is "Ynyus75" and my signature is "yny") --yny (talk) 15:32, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I'm pretty much interested... Actually, we do have a lot of citations. But it's like a list at the bottom rather than inline citations. I've replied to the talk discussions. Please have a look... I've got nearly tired of fighting regional fights by now... Not only on this article, but also North India. We have to improve both these articles... My Edits on South India Page

Would you please let me know who should give me permission to make changes? --yny (talk) 20:13, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply, like I said I don't want to reinvent the wheel, moreover I have not made any changes just moved the stuff from the introduction part to relevant sections and added some additional info in some sections. Please go through my changes and then make changes. I thoroughly discourage you to undo things blindly. Thanks --yny (talk) 20:32, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Image:Bret9.jpg

If you believe that an image from Wikimedia Commons is actually a copyright violation, as in the case of Image:Bret9.jpg, you will need to address that on Commons through the processes established there, which may be different from those here. The reason is because the image does not reside on Wikipedia anymore - it resides at Commons. SchuminWeb (Talk) 11:21, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

re Bharat Pumps & Compressors (notability tag)

G'day AreJay, I'm just replying to your message on my talk page. I don't think that notability has been established for the article yet. The company might be notable as you say but you need to address that on the article page, The best way to address this concern is to reference published, third-party sources about the subject. You make the point of telling me that the company is owned by the Government of India. Unfortunatly the reference you have given (a Pdf file) is from Department of Public Enterprise. You need a source not from the Government. Is there anything from the mainstream news content over there? Perhaps some online news content you could citeweb into the article? Also please see WP:SOURCES. Sting_au Talk 05:21, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

I've removed the notability tag now. A couple of the external links you added are good sources. Should really be added as citewebs WP:CITE and utilized in the reference section for best effect. The article will no doubt evolve further over time, so good idea to learn how to use the cite templates on any articles you work on. WP:LAYOUT is another good page to check out. Re [1], thanks for your involvement. However, this ip has been switching addresses from the bt domain for some time (evading his week long block) for trolling talk page (see User:Ghanadar galpa/ip-vandal and [2][3]. His clear disregard for wikipedia rules and policies indicates that reasoning with him is futile, and a long-term rangeblock might be the best way to deal with him.Ghanadar galpa (talk) 18:19, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

I have discussed this matter with another admin and we agreed that a semi-protect of the Indophobia article was the best way forward. The anon IP will then be forced to play a positive role in editing Wikipedia or resort to arguing on the talk page. Either way, there is little chance they can cause problems on this particular article. Ignoring trolling is probably the best course of action. Instituting a range block would be disruptive as it appears this anon is using the same internet provider as me (the most popular provider in the UK) and I and many others could end up blocked. I also think that Ghanadar's efforts to engage in constructive discussion should acknowledged. Although I disagree with him, I've found that he has turned a new leaf since his recent block and as such should not be regarded as having ill intentions towards Wikipedia but rather should be given guidance. This is not a simple case of two editors with the same level of wrongdoing. Ghanadar is making an effort, whereas the anon is simply being disruptive.--Conjoiner (talk) 01:52, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Pwc logo.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:Pwc logo.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 05:59, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Bangalore-Nikkul-3RR-Policy

Hi AreJay,
This is in reference to your sentence (In addition, you violated 3RR today and though I had every right to report you, I didn't.) written to Nikkul in Talk:Bangalore. While Nikkul has apparently involved in the ongoing revert war, strictly speaking per policy, he has not technically violated WP:3RR today. He has made exactly 3 reverts, which is not a violation of the policy. Having said that, consistent revert warring, even if not violating 3RR technically, could result in a block. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that, in order to violate 3RR, one has to revert (undoing the edits of other editor(s) ) at least 4 times (not just 3 times) in a span of 24 hours. Hope that helps. - KNM Talk 22:48, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

While evaluating the reverts per WP:3RR, consecutive edits/reverts made by an editor is considered as a single revert.
So, the first two diffs you provided me, 4:03am, 4:06am are effectively a single revert. In other words, if an editor reverts 10 previous edits made to the article, without no one else editing the article in between, then all those 10 edits are considered as 1 revert for 3RR purpose and not 10 reverts. I have seen plenty of 3RR complaints which are rejected because of this misunderstanding of the policy by the complaining editors.
To summarize, just see the What is a revert? section of the 3RR policy page. That clearly states: "Consecutive reverts by one editor are generally treated as one revert for the purposes of this rule."
For the same reason, I told above, Nikkul has technically not violated 3RR in last 24 hours. Let me know if you have any questions. :) - KNM Talk 23:42, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Image rotation

Just in case if you are not aware, the concept of Image rotation has been implemented in the Culture section of India page. Fair use rationale for Image:Wikipedia Bangalore Map.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Wikipedia Bangalore Map.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. βcommand 00:50, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

UAE Noticeboard

AreJay, I think the noticeboard is a great idea. But, I have a few concerns. Quickly looking at a few noticeboards, I get the impression that the main point is to provide collaboration for topics that have a lot of articles. The United Arab Emirates does not have as many articles, or editors, as other noticeboards have. I am not sure if you know, but a WikiProject UAE was formed around the same time WikiProject Dubai was created. That project might be the best way to address the issues about "inconsistencies/redundancies in UAE related articles." If WP:UAE becomes a success (which as of now does not seem likely), many articles are created, and many more editors join, then the noticeboard might become a good idea. But, if you do create it then I would be glad to help you. Leitmanp (talk | contributions) 20:25, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Sorry for the late reply. It does seem like a good idea, and I would also be happy to help out in its creation and maintenance. I have to admit, I originally had the same concerns as Leitmanp relating to the small amount of UAE articles in existance, but then again the Sri Lankan WikiProject has a noticeboard (although there are, at the moment, more Sri Lankan-related articles than there are UAE-related ones). A board may be the best way to raise awareness about what articles need to be created and what articles need improvement, as WP:UAE is progessing rather slowly. Cheers, Rai-me 22:10, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
Similar apologies from me; I just returned from a stint in Istanbul. I think a noticeboard may be useful, but I have to confess that despite being born in Dubai and having visited it since (in 2004), I am no expert on the subject and would likely not participate much in such a project. Best of luck. siafu (talk) 19:55, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Re: Your recent revert of my edit on Bangalore

Hi! I see that you have reverted an edit I made recently in the lead of Bangalore. I was wondering why, since no reason was given for the revert. I rather prefer discussion than engaging in an edit war, and so, here I am.

The reasons for my edit were:

  1. The census of India is a better RS than the world gazetteer; also, the internally linked Wikipedia article takes its source from the census of India.
  2. When we reference a source, such as the World Gazetteer, which lists Bangalore as number three, and then internally reference the List of million-plus cities in India, which lists Bangalore at number six, then there is a disparity which can confuse the reader (as it confused me!)

If necessary, we could mention that according to the 2001 census, Bangalore was the 6th largest by population and is currently, the third-largest, which would also give credence to the enormous growth that Bangalore has seen in recent years.

Please let me know. Or, if you wish, we could also move this discussion to the talk page. Thanks. aJCfreak yAk 07:24, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. It does not wash away all I had in mind, but it clears the fog. I'm new to the population thingy, btw. I simply hate incorrect info on WP, so when I see it, I'm pretty quick to remove/correct it, as necessary. :) Thanks, again. aJCfreak yAk 17:23, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
Since you're offering to be so helpful, I'll bother you with this one - Isn't the census data more reliable? Would it then be okay to restructure the info available at the list of most populous cities in India as according to the population data finder available at [4] ? If you click the city name, then the popup displays the breakdown of city populace for the UA, and then other smaller entities, such as the M Corp. Would that be okay? I find it kinda unworthy of WP for the list article to be relying on sources which existed once upon a time... (No offence, but still...) aJCfreak yAk 18:00, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Kannada literature in the Vijayanagara empire

Thanks for the support. This conception (or misconception) that you mentioned perhaps stems from the fact that Telugu literature did see its heyday during the 20 year rule of Krishnadeva Raya (1509-1529). So, non-detail texts on literature of this empire normally focus on Krishnadeva Raya, the greatest king and generalise it. Kannada seemed to have had an upper hand during the rule of Deva Raya II (1425-1450), who in my opinion was not far behind Krishnadeva Raya. However, there is no evidence of either language (Kannada or Telugu) dominating the literary culture during the remaining 200 years of the empires existance. As such, the Kannada textual production had a different responsibility, in that it was much more religious, proselytising and didactic in nature. Telugu, seems to have glowed as a court literature, closely following the Prabhanda style of Sanskrit while Kannada was well into local genres, reaching out to the common man.Dineshkannambadi (talk) 11:27, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Census India

I came across the new site of census while updating Gangtok, and found that the provisional table of population that GR India template uses is now outdated. Unfortunately, I could not dig out any such updated table, which would provide us with the population of cities.

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Bangalore 1280x1024.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Bangalore 1280x1024.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. Speedy deletion of Image:Margham desert.jpg

A tag has been placed on Image:Margham desert.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only," "non-derivative use" or "used with permission," it has not been shown to comply with the limited standards for the use of non-free content. [5], and it was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19, or is not used in any articles. If you agree with the deletion, there is no need to do anything. If, however, you believe that this image may be retained on Wikipedia under one of the permitted conditions then:

  • state clearly the source of the image. If it has been copied from elsewhere on the web you should provide links to: the image itself, the page which uses it and the page which contains the license conditions.
  • add the relevant copyright tag.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:Margham desert.jpg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hi, AreJay - I happened to see your note about the above image. This is an unfortunately all-too-common situation, Flickr is notorious for not keeping track of license changes. Might I recommend uploading your Flickr-sourced images to Commons? They have a license verification scheme (just add the template {{flickrreview}} template to the image and it will be verified by another user). This protects the image from deletion in the event of license change in the future. There is even a bot that will automatically upload the highest-quality image and fill in the details for you, in addition to verifying the license automatically - I highly recommend it. (You'll need a Commons account to use it.) Please drop me a line if you need any help. Kelly hi! 21:16, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Image and media stuff

I looked through your upload log to resolve other possible copyright issues - I'm afraid some other Flickr images had to be deleted because of unfree licenses at Flickr. The following media still needs some attention:

Listed for deletion

Possibly unfree

Better sources needed

Unable to verify the copyright status from the source given:

Audio samples

On these, please see WP:SAMPLE. The length of the sample must be no longer than 30 seconds or 10% of the length of the work, whichever is shorter. Also the quality should be no more than 64kbps. Please also add {{Music sample info}} to the description pages for the required copyright info.

Thanks! Kelly hi! 01:47, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Pwc logo.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:Pwc logo.gif. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:27, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

Article deletion notification

AreJay, New Medical Center is up for deletion (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/New Medical Center). Although you did not create the article and have not made any edits to it, I thought I should let you know since several articles you created do link to it. If it is notable in some way, do you think you could expand it? If not, then I will assume deletion is okay. Thanks. Leitmanp (talk | contributions) 01:06, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

Bangalore Skyline

You have to keep in mind that Vidhan Soudha doesn't come under the skyline category. The UB City is the the business hub of Bangalore. Vidhansoudha is the legislative building and doesn't symbolise the importance bangalore business importance in India and the World. What I prepose is to fill the skyline like how it is done on the London article. In which both Vidhan Soudha and UB City can be represented in the same skyline spot..Manaspunhani (talk) 09:08, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Dubai Creek's name

AreJay, could you please see the discussion at Talk:Dubai Creek about the word "creek." Also if it is not too much work, is it possible for you to add some historical information to (or just expand) the Dubai Creek article, as it is very much needed. I know you have more knowledge and more available resources about this than I do. Thanks. Leitmanp (talk | contributions) 22:50, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks Leitmanp, replied on the article's talk page. AreJay (talk) 03:19, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Leave it there then, it isn't a problem it being there. Many are asking the question is Taylor the best sportsperson ever of any sport. So it's a simple fact he's the best ever. Sid Waddell says it every minute on commentery and he's been doing darts for over 30 years.

Check out these stats... tournaments wins etc...
