Draft:Anthony Arnett

Hi there, would mind having a quick look at my article Draft:Anthony Arnett and let me know how it is, cheers Jaxbrother (talk) 13:26, 24 January 2020 (UTC)

Jaxbrother: I did a quick edit. I hope you find it and the summary instructive. Also, I note several references to Wikipedia itself. Wikipedia should not be used as a reference, and I believe that includes uploaded images, so please change those references to a reliable source outside Wikipedia. —Anomalocaris (talk) 19:08, 24 January 2020 (UTC)

RHaworth proposed decision

I'm sure this was an accident, but Arbs don't take kindly to random editors editing case pages, let alone fiddling with their signatures. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 23:25, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

Ritchie333: Thank you for communicating with me here and thank you especially for assuming good faith. At Wikipedia:Linter, it says, "It is OK to edit other people's User and User talk pages, and other people's comments on talk pages; but if you do, please see Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines § Editing others' comments for guidance ... Try to preserve the appearance." Admittedly, it doesn't say that it's OK to edit "case pages", but I have edited hundreds of thousands of user signatures on tens of thousands of pages, including a number of "case pages", with minimal complaints. As for Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/RHaworth/Proposed decision, I believe I was careful to preserve appearances exactly. If I made a mistake, please point out where I messed up. —Anomalocaris (talk) 00:37, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
P.S. The reason I came to this page is that it was listed at Lint errors: Multiple unclosed formatting tags, the only page in the Wikipedia namespace with this high priority lint error. —Anomalocaris (talk) 01:51, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the Draft ref consolidation, but watch CITEVAR

Hello, thanks for this edit at Draft:Operation Car Wash investigation phases, especially the part about consolidating like references. (There were dozens and dozens of changes in that one edit, and I haven't actually examined your deletions to see if they were properly consolidated because the standard DIFF page is so confusing that it's hard to tell, and I'm just assuming you did it correctly.)

However on the flip side, I reject your changing one perfectly valid param alias to another equally valid one, such as |lang=pt to |language=pt, or |website= to |newspaper (which are both equally valid aliases of |work=), or the addition of double quotes around the name= attribute of the <ref> tag when they are not needed per the documentation, or sucking out extra blanks in citations around equal signs, or removing the name= attribute of the <ref> tag, simply because there isn't (yet!) a second reference which reuses it. These are violations of WP:CITEVAR. I can live with the langlanguage change, the blanks removal, and the unnecessary double quotes in name attributes this time, but I am planning to reuse some of those ref names, and even if I don't get to it when I wish to, there is absolutely nothing in policy, guideline, or style guide that forbids a name attribute on a ref tag that is never reused in another tag. Please use whatever bot you used to remove the name attributes on those refs, to put them back again. And if you are using AWB (not tagged in your edit; please make sure your summary tags it properly if you are) or some other bot, please program your bot not to do anything in violation of WP:CITEVAR or MOS:VAR, including the param aliases, discretionary blank usage, or double quotes, but most especially, the name attribute. If you are doing it manually, then, wow! and please just adhere to guidelines going forward. Thank you. Mathglot (talk) 05:14, 12 February 2020 (UTC)

Hello Mathglot, and thank you for sharing your concerns.
  • WP:CITEVAR says "Editors should not attempt to change an article's established citation style merely on the grounds of personal preference." That means that if an article has an established citation style, stay with it. Citation style using no citation templates vs. {{citation}} vs. {{cite}} templates; and if templates are used, how they are laid out, for example, one parameter per line vs. wrapped. But this article did not have an established citation style. It used mostly {{cite}} templates, with a small number of {{citation}} templates, and some non-templated references. Within {{cite}}, there was a diversity of spacing, including most commonly no spacing around the equals, but also space only after the equals, space only before the equals, and space on both sides of the equals, and most commonly space only before the pipe, sometimes space before and after the pipe, and rarely, space only after the pipe. Also, some parameters were aliased in multiple ways, for example, both access-date and accessdate. There was no established style on these issues. WP:CITEVAR also says, "Generally considered helpful: ... imposing one style on an article with inconsistent citation styles...."
    • {{cite}} was the most common, so I did what WP:CITEVAR considers helpful and moved {{citation}} to {{cite}}.
    • no space around equals was the most common, so I worked to unify towards that.
    • space only before the pipe was most common, so I worked to unify toward that.
  • |lang=pt to |language=pt: this page used both |lang and |language, and I worked to unify it to |language. If you want to switch it the other way, that's good too.
  • the addition of double quotes around the name= attribute of the <ref> tag when they are not needed per the documentation: WP:REFNAME says "Quotation marks are preferred...."; this article already had several ref names with strictly-speaking optional quotes, so I moved toward using quotation marks consistently.
  • |website= to |newspaper: I made no such changes. This article used both parameters before I edited it, and I didn't change them. However, I did change some {{cite web}} to {{cite news}}, because it can be helpful for editors to see that certain sources are bona fide news sources.
  • Bots, AWB: Sorry, I use neither. I edit everything manually.
  • removing the name= attribute of the <ref> tag, simply because there isn't (yet!) a second reference which reuses it: I have restored Estado-graphic" (corrected to "Estado-graphic"), and also ran, Estado-2014, Globo-2017, Justi-2017, Carvalho-2017, all with quotes. I scrutinized my previous edit and it looks like I removed only those 6.
Let's face it. This article was a mess of inconsistency. It had at least 5 date formats: mdy and dmy format in English, dmy format in Portuguese, YYYY-MM-DD, D-M-YYYY, and invalid ones including "23/8/2017 7 h 13". It had citations without templates and with both styles of citation templates. It had a few names in all caps. It had accessdate with and without the hyphen. I saw inconsistency and moved toward consistency. Cheers! —Anomalocaris (talk) 07:52, 12 February 2020 (UTC)
That sounds like a reasonable response to this edit. I have some differences about how you interpret CITEVAR, and I know there's a guideline somewhere that says not to make white space changes that have no effect on the rendered page, but CITEVAR is maybe not it. In any case, any differences and the other stuff is small potatoes, and I can live with it. Thanks for your concern in improving the article, and especially for the dupe refs consolidation. I have to admit, I didn't expect you to really put the name attributes back in, so I'm very appreciative of that. We're both working to the same goal here, maybe in slightly different ways. If you know Portuguese, we could use more help with the Draft. If you don't, there's another way you could help, if you feel like it: I know that other articles can't in-link to a Draft, but if you're good at finding in-link possibilities, if you could just list them in a section at the Draft talk page, that would be great! The article Offshoots of Operation Car Wash recently moved out of Draft, also needs more in-links. Thanks also for your quick response. Happy editing! P.S. I'm blown away that you did that manually. I use an offline regex editor sometimes, and I'm assuming you did that, otherwise, a completely manual operation to make those changes seems pretty amazing. can you help me?, what should I do with my draft?, how and how long can my draft be approved? @Anomalocaris: — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kebajikan111 (talkcontribs) 09:40, 16 February 2020 (UTC)

Kebajikan111: Please sign your comments on talk pages with four tildes (~~~~). What is the name of the draft? When you say "how long" I don't know if you are talking about the length of the draft, or how long you should expect to wait, or perhaps something else.—Anomalocaris (talk) 09:48, 16 February 2020 (UTC)

  • It's a good idea to indent comments intended as replies by starting each paragraph with one more colon (:) than in the paragraph you are replying to.
  • Usually, pings such as {{Re}} go at the beginning of a comment, and usually not after the four tildes for signing.
  • Your talk page now has a "Welcome!" section with some helpful links that may answer your questions.

@Anomalocatis so when? Kebajikan111 (talk) 16:57, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
Be sure your draft has references, not just a list of external links at the end, but footnotes to the key ideas of the article. Then, at the top of the draft, insert
{{subst:submit}}
to start the process of having your drafts reviewed. This process can take months, so please be patient. —Anomalocaris (talk) 18:48, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
it was really tiring, but the article made can be ascertained the truth through the “external link” listed. let other editors fix it later Kebajikan111 (talk) 19:09, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
@Anomalocaris: btw, thank you for helping. Kebajikan111 (talk) 19:11, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
Kebajikan111 Thank you for the acknowledgment. The "Re" template is intended to send a notification that there's a message on the talk page. But users are automatically notified that there's a message on their own talk page, so it's not necessary to use "Re" naming a user on their own talk page. Note: If you want your draft approved, do it the Wikipedia way. Cheers! —Anomalocaris (talk) 19:15, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for March 4

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Rhinebeck (village), New York, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Antonio Delgado (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 10:25, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for work on 2

I saw your post on the help desk. That looks like a lot of tedious worthwhile work. If you are doing it anyway, you might think about creating and using a template instead of HTML markup, so we can adjust it later if we change your collective minds. since most these seem to be for units of area, perhaps something like {{squ|km}}, which would produce km2. A more general template might be good for other powers: perhaps {{pwru|km|3}} to produce km3. -Arch dude (talk) 18:13, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi, please explain the reason for removing sortable from the table in Pumped-storage hydroelectricity I find the sortable function in tables invaluable. Thanks --Tadpolefarm (talk) 13:58, 18 March 2020 (UTC)

Tadpolefarm: Thank you for pointing that out. I have fixed it. I edited Pumped-storage hydroelectricity because it was was listed in Lint errors: Table tag that should be deleted, and the table of countries had two table-opening lines where it needed only one. I originally removed the one marked sortable. Difference after my two edits, showing double table headings replaced with only sortable table headingAnomalocaris (talk) 18:33, 18 March 2020 (UTC)

Weird LintError (Multiline table in list)

Hi, I see you have made a comment on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history/Archive 92 regarding weird LintError. There was a wikilink with missing ]] earlier on the page that created this error. I have fixed this and removed your comment. Tholme (talk) 16:34, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

Tholme: Thanks! Glad you were able to solve this mystery. —Anomalocaris (talk) 16:41, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
If you turn on the Syntax Highlighter gadget, these errors will be easier to spot. The text turns from white or pink to blue at the point of the missing bracket. Missing brackets cause all sorts of Linter errors that may not be given exactly the right label by the Linter; it gets confused. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:50, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
Tholme: I use the regular "edit this page" to edit in Wikipedia. How do I turn on the Syntax Highlighter gadget there? —Anomalocaris (talk) 19:37, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
Go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets and check the box next to "Syntax highlighter", then click the Save button at the bottom of the page. The next time you edit a page, you will see a bunch of colors (I hope you are not colorblind). Let me know if you have any questions; I have this page on my Watchlist, so you are welcome to respond here. The most common question is "Why is everything pink?" and the (annoying) answer is "Because you need to replace <br> with <br /> to make the Syntax highlighter work." – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:02, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
Tholme: The tool is good enough, in and of itself, but it seems to interfere with the behavior of the up and down arrow scrolling keys for scrolling the whole page, as opposed to scrolling within the editing window. So I've turned it off. —Anomalocaris (talk) 07:01, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

tt to samp

Hi, I noticed you've been changing some HTML tt tags to samp in some places, such as at Draft:Dracula (color scheme). However, I don't think this these changes have been appropriate, as it is meant to represent computer output. Opencooper (talk) 04:43, 24 April 2020 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) See mw:Help:Lint errors/obsolete-tag. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:54, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
Opencooper (and Jonesey95): mw:Help:Lint errors/obsolete-tag is instructive here. It happens that I wrote the section on substitutes for <tt> on December 5, 2017. It is true that when lint-fixing <tt> tags, I most commonly replace them with <samp>, and sometimes I may be careless, but I think I got it right in Draft:Dracula (color scheme), where the monospaced display is itself at least potentially markup in something like <span style="color:#44475a"> or its equivalent in C, which is the language of Z shell if not Dracula. It's certainly not keyboard input or variable names. I think <samp> is right, but if you want to change it to <code>, I won't argue. I also wouldn't argue if the hexadecimal colors aren't monospace at all; after all, the colors aren't monospace in RGB or HSL notation. —Anomalocaris (talk) 06:40, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
Well it's not code either, I was just nitpicking the semantics. While before with tt it was broad, we also don't want to overspecify. I think the reason they were made monospace is the same reason you mentioned, since they go in code. I just wanted to make sure you'e applying samp right overall since in your contribs I see it in other places. Happy editing! P.S. @Jonesey95: Thanks for that link, I had no idea center was deprecated. Opencooper (talk) 07:56, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
Opencooper: Hmmm... When I edited mw:Help:Lint errors/obsolete-tag on December 5, 2017, I believe I had sources for the idea that the samp tag was proper for "function and tag names, etc.", and this been unchallenged there for over 28 months, but now I can't find any source supporting any use other than "sample output". Not sure what I want to do going forward.
Yes, center, font, strike and tt tags are all obsolete in HTML5, but these are low priority lint errors. If you want to help, see WP:linter. Even if you don't want to edit primarily for de-linting, it's still worth installing lintHint so you can assure that you're not adding new lint, and maybe even to help remove lint from articles you are editing for other reasons. —Anomalocaris (talk) 08:58, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
Yeah looking at both the whatwg and w3 specs, they both say "sample or quoted output from another program or computing system". To be fair, it very well could also have included the stuff you added at the time since the standards can be in flux and deprecated tags have sometimes been repurposed. And sure! I'll install the extension; I've already been linting some of my own stuff. Opencooper (talk) 09:24, 24 April 2020 (UTC)

with regards to a recent edit to my talk page

Can you explain why you made that edit? I recognize that talk pages are for Wikipedia not me, but at the same time can you check in with me about any changes you would like to make or would like me to make before implementing them? That way we can come to a solution together. Aasim 01:06, 12 May 2020 (UTC)

I also noted you used AWB for your edit. Have you even checked to make sure that you were not editing a talk page? One thing that is expected out of all AWB users is that you review your edits before saving. Can you make sure you do that for future reference? That would be quite helpful. Aasim 01:11, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
Awesome Aasim: Thank you for writing. I edited your talk page and fixed a Obsolete HTML tags lint error, replacing the <center> tag with its HTML5-compatible replacement markup. This is specifically authorized in WP:Linter, which says, "It is OK to edit other people's User and User talk pages, and other people's comments on talk pages; but if you do, please see Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines § Editing others' comments for guidance." Also, I didn't use AWB, I used the plain-vanilla editor that comes when you click "edit this page" at the top. Yes, I knew I was editing a talk page. Yes, I reviewed my edit, as I usually do, and verified that there were no lint errors and that my edit preserved the display appearance exactly. Cheers! —Anomalocaris (talk) 04:26, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
Hah, thanks for the clarification! I wish a bot could do this so I would not receive notifications about it. Aasim 04:29, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
Awesome Aasim: Bots could do some lint clean-up, and in fact some bots were launched to do some lint clean-up, but the bots generated notifications and users complained. That doesn't mean that bots won't ever be deployed to do lint clean-up, but "excess notification" was an issue in the past. —Anomalocaris (talk) 05:02, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
Yes, this is a script that maybe someone can work on and test on "Test Wikipedia", then get approval for at WP:BAG. Aasim 05:06, 12 May 2020 (UTC)

Thanks and advice

Hi, thanks for your help with citations on Supreme Court of Japan.

Do you have a recommended workflow for using good ref names in visual editor? The :1 notation appears by default when I use the visual editor, and I can't find a way to edit them without changing them individually in source editor.

Maybe add a bunch of citations in visual and then change them once in source before using them in-line in multiple places? I would appreciate guidance to save you the trouble in the future.

Thixotrofic (talk) 04:20, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Thixotrofic: Thank you for your message. I have been wondering for a long time why ":0"-style ref names are so prevalent. I have always written detailed edit summaries, and a few days ago I stepped up and added "abominable" to my summaries. And now, thanks to you, I finally know where these abominable ref names are coming from. WP:REFNAME discourages such ref names, but does not go as far as I do and call them abominable. You have solved the mystery for me, thank you!
I tried the visual editor a long time ago, and I found it unworkable, so I have continued to use the regular source editor. Since I don't use it, I don't have any advice on the visual editor.
Even though I consider ":0"-style ref names abominable, and even though WP:REFNAME discourages them, you have a right to use them, especially when the visual editor puts them in by default. Other editors may or may not improve them later along the lines of <ref name="Einstein 1905">. I encourage you to make such improvements yourself, but you really don't have to. —Anomalocaris (talk) 07:23, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Userboxes - Do I need to say where I copied the template? Please let me know if I need to elaborate on its history or ask permissions. I want mine to be copied and by used by others and everything legit. Thank you. James Kevin McMahon (talk) 22:20, 17 September 2020 (UTC)
Hi James Kevin McMahon. Thank you for the barnstar! It's usually best to reply on the same talk page as the original message, but since you gave me a barnstar it makes sense that you replied here, and I'll keep the conversation here. The issue is simply that in your userboxes, such as, most recently, User:James Kevin McMahon/Userboxes/Scotland, you closed the <big> tag with <big/>, instead of the correct </big>. A leading slash in an HTML (or quasi-HTML) tag means close a previously opened tag. A trailing slash in an HTML tag means open and close the tag all at once. This is allowed for some tags, such as <nowiki />, which is equivalent to <nowiki><nowiki/>, or <ref name="Foo" />, which is equivalent to <ref name="Foo"></ref>.
Also, your France userbox had a strange piped link; please take a look at my change and see how I fixed it.
If the original userbox you cloned had a <big/> in it, go ahead and change it to </big>. You don't need permission to fix errors like this, and cloning a userbox is totally legit. Cheers! —Anomalocaris (talk) 22:52, 17 September 2020 (UTC)

Hello, what is your opinion about the draft? Does it have enough reputation to create, and to say that there is a wiki in the wikidata. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 5.113.148.228 (talk) 14:29, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

I am not part of the draft approval process. I think Draft:Amir Sarkhosh (Snooker) is off to a good start. I encourage you and other editors to follow the advice I left in a comment at the top of the draft. Also, my practice is to use {{cite news}} rather than {{cite web}} when the source is a news organization. There's no difference in appearance, but it's a message to other editors "this is a news source." Cheers! —Anomalocaris (talk) 20:24, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
