Changing of "Kiev" to "Kyiv"

Your edits changing "Kiev" to "Kyiv" are not being made with care. You are clearly using a search-and-replace feature which ends up changing things like web site titles and quotations. Please check each edit before saving. ... discospinster _talk 01:47, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

Mass changes and bot-like editing

Could you advise where the consensus to change "Kiev" to "Kyiv" en masse was established? Additionally, please stop making these changes until the thread at WP:AN concerning these edits is resolved. If you continue making these changes without demonstrating consensus, you may be blocked from editing the article namespace. –xeno^talk 12:33, 24 September 2020 (UTC)

@Xeno:, it bears pointing out that the consensus formed at the first link was very rough (as indicated by the closer), and there is little doubt that it will likely be challenged in the near future; it might even come sooner, due to the apparent nationalist component of Ukrainians pushing for the traditional, Cyrillic spelling of the more common name. The second link appears to point to page move cleanup based on the rough consensus noted in the first link.

For me, the best way for this thread to be resolved is for User:AndriiDr to use whatever bot they utilized to undo their mass edits, and then undertake adding them again in far, far, smaller quantities - so as to create discussion at each change. Uncontested changes will happen, but those changes which are more problematic will be a crucible in which a more durable consensus is built. As I mentioned before, I am *deeply* concerned by the apparent nationalist motivation behind these mass edits; if they are not in fact bot edits (as AndriiDr has argued), then there is a lot of dedication involved in making 0ver three hundred edits to articles over a twelve hour time frame. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 19:06, 28 September 2020 (UTC)

I would like to ask you to please stop the bot-like editing of Wiki-en articles for now, and to take the time to contribute to the discussion at the above discussion at the Administrator's Noticeboard. I am unsure how edits are conducted in the Ukrainian wiki, but Single Purpose Accounts (SPA) are very frowned upon here.

My edits follow the consensus, and your argument “I can't follow the consensus because you imagine that maybe it may be changed in the future” is no reason not to follow it today. Many articles, templates and categories have already been renamed, and their number is increasing every day. Bot-like editing and inappropriate changes from Kiev to Kyiv

Hi,

I noticed in your recent edits, you have been almost exclusively focused on changing Kiev to Kyiv - sometimes in an inappropriate historical context, eg [1], where in 1975, the correct romanization would have been Kiev, or in [2], where in 1961, the same would have applied, or in [3], where again, the same would have applied. Since we are slowly collecting material for a full topic ban from Ukraine for you, to note here that this is not acceptable and goes against consensus of the community which currently uses Odessa. Cyrillic names

Thanks for your support of changing in Cyrillic names. Can you check the names in Kiev Day and Night and convert into Cyrillic script? The article needs this type of correction concerning the name of persons in native Ukrainian language. The Supermind (talk) 07:52, 11 April 2021 (UTC)

I put the names of persons translated into English language. Some are Ukranain customs, like Albina Pererva, but I'm not sure about Alexander Vladimirovich and Alexander Ozolin, whose names should be in Ukrainian custom. I directely copy-paste these English translated names to the article. I mean you might to check out the names accordingly to their naming customs. The Supermind (talk) 10:48, 11 April 2021 (UTC)

@The Supermind: You're welcome. Kiev Day and Night is not widely used in English-language reliable sources, and according to the Kyiv consensus we should prefer the spelling Kyiv here. No, for most non-Ukrainians foreigners, it should be Kiev and it's the most recognized title for most English speaking foreigners. We have to bring into English title Kiev because of its presence in English Wikipedia. Newsbeezer is the best example of foreign website that is not written in Ukrainian or Russian language and use the title Kiev Day and Night. The Supermind (talk) 06:19, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

Stop changing Uk names

Hi, Arorae. Transcription on this site does not look relevant in this case (link) and looks like an error. Here, this site is used mixed writing (link). Although, the site allows different links (different urls).

For the romanization of Ukrainian we use this standard. Transcriptions on this site look controversial, at least in these cases. --AndriiDr (talk) 05:42, 7 August 2021 (UTC)

IOC or WA have priority on official romanization, because of the COMMON NAME rule. For example, Sergey Bubka is not Serhiy or Serhii Bubka, even if he is an Ukrainian. You cannot change this rule in thousands of sportsmen without any kind of consensus.--Arorae (talk) 08:15, 7 August 2021 (UTC)

Arorae, Bubka and other Ukrainian athletes who have common English name, with distinguished writing, can be counted on fingers. Unlike them, 99.9% of Ukrainian athletes don't have the common English name. Here is the rule for users, based on a consensus, following which we use this transliteration table. Note that the COMMONNAME rule refers to this consensus.

Self-identification of a person plays a major part. A person considers himself a Ukrainian, and uses this spelling itself according to the international transliteration. Other sources use this spelling. IOC or WA, the authoritative linguistics sources to which you refer to, use both spelling. And the consensus tells us to use it. For example, although this site uses Olga and Moskva, on Wikipedia we use Olha and Moscow, or here. --AndriiDr (talk) 06:29, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

National varieties of English

Hello. In a recent edit to the page AKM, you changed one or more words or styles from one national variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Wikipedia articles.

For a subject exclusively related to the United Kingdom (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. For something related to another English-speaking country, such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, India, or Pakistan use the variety of English used there. For an international topic, use the form of English that the original author of the article used.

In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to another, even if you don't normally use the version in which the article is written. Respect other people's versions of English. They, in turn, should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Wikipedia articles are written can be found in the Manual of Style. Change of references into Ukrainian

I understand your sentiment, but there is not a single English Wikipedia policy whioch makes this edit acceptable, provided it is contested. Would you please stop. Nobody cared about these hromadas, until I started adding them to Wikipedia, and still nobody cares about them, but if you want to help, there are still 14 Oblasts where they have not been added, you may use the pattern I created for example and then add Ukrainian references. But just walking after my edits with the only purpose of replacing Russian references with Ukrainian ones is unacceptable.--Ymblanter (talk) 07:20, 15 October 2021 (UTC)
