World Series MVPs[edit]

isn't it only fair that every World Series MVP have their own article on wikipedia? well i noticed that there were two that didn't, so i set out to right this wrong. Bryan Adams[edit]

We don't give strings of qualifications/honours/medals, etc. after people's names (Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies) doesn't mention this specifically, but a look at other biographies will back up the point; there may be other articles that make this mistake, but the vast majority of articles don't). The honours are mentioned in the text, and adding them after his name (especially in the context of other articles) looks rather cheesy. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 09:50, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't disagree about a person's right to use the letters in that way, nor about the order — it's jusyt a question of Wikipedia style. As I said above, I had no doubt that exceptions could be found, but there are thousands of other articles in which the letters aren't used. It's rather like the title "Dr"; almost the only time it's shoved on the front of a person's name in the first line of articles is when some point is being made (so editors of David Duke are always trying to give him the title, while editors at John Lewis (philosopher) and Peter J. King (to grab two from Category:English philosophers) are happy to mention the doctorate in the article. My feeling is that adding the letters as well as the explanation a couple of lines later is over-egging the pudding, and looks — well, as I said above, cheesy.

Ah, well if you would prefer a program that lets you see changes quickly, mark vandals and such you could try the WP:CDVF. Essentially you download the jar file and run the program. It has some nice options, but it works best with a browser that has tabs, like Firefox. Near Vertical Incidence Skywave[edit]

Hey, I cleaned-up the Near Vertical Incidence Skywave page to make it appropriate for Wikiepdia. I removed the Wifi stuff, and added a simple explanation of what NVIS really is.

basically, NVIS is a radio propogation mode that is especially useful in communicating over the horizon in circumstances where VHF isn't useful. Sometimes you want to communicate with a station on shortwave thats too far for groundwave and too far for traditional skywave. This is called the skip zone. So, basically, NVIS allows you to communicate into the skip zone. This is useful for emergency or mmilitary applications.

a heads-up on the List of Guantanamo Bay detainees[edit]

Greetings,

Since you voted to keep the article List of Guantanamo Bay detainees I thought I would give you a "heads-up". A copyright violation was filed against the article, on October 11th. It was filed by someone who had voted to delete the article on October 5th.

I believe that the copyright violation is entirely bogus. I believe it is bogus because, as explained in Feist Publications v. Rural Telephone Service, lists of facts, like lists of names, cannot be copyright. This Feist v. Rural case went all the way to the US Supreme Court, which made the possibly counter-intuitive ruling that the amount of effort someone put in to compiling a list plays no role in determining whether that list is eligible for copyright protection.

Even if alphabetic lists of names could be copyright, I believe the wikipedia list would not be violating copyright since the list was compiled from various sources.

Yes, I have considered that this user invoked a bogus copyright violation to achieve a result that failed in the {AfD}. Yes, I asked them to terminate the copyright violation process, in light of Feist v Rural. They declined. The backlog in the administrators dealing with copyright violations seems to be on the order of a month long.

Anyhow, I wanted the people who had shown interest in the article to not freak out, or feel betrayed, by seeing the copyright violation tag. -- Geo Swan 11:35, 19 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
