How do I stop the autoblock so I can create a new account. It says below "you are welcome to create a new account" so I don't understand why my ability to create a new account has been suspended. The autoblock said it run expire today but now it says tomorrow. AlexTheDoctor (talk) 15:38, 1 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can tell, you were soft-blocked and should be able to create a new account without problems (autoblock was disabled). -Obsidi (talk) 17:22, 1 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I can't create a new account or edit any page other than this one using either account. Ymblanter (talk · contribs) auto-blocked me Sock Puppetry even though the notice on this page says I can create a new account. I thought the new account I made would be suitable although I still think this name should be allowed. AlexTheDoctor (talk) 17:38, 1 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think I understand, when the other account (AlexTheEconomicDoctor) got blocked, it was a hard block with account creation blocked, meaning that no one from your IP can create accounts anymore. I'll see if I can find an admin to review this. -Obsidi (talk) 17:42, 1 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I will see whether I can remove the autoblock.--Ymblanter (talk) 17:43, 1 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have changed the settings to softblock. However, if the third account will have the same problems as the first two ones, chances are you will be hard-blocked for trolling this time.--Ymblanter (talk) 17:46, 1 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. AlexTheDoctor (talk) 17:47, 1 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I guess I'm unclear regarding above. It appears that you've started editing from a third account. Is this request still needed? SQLQuery me! 16:17, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I did create a new account but didn't bother editing and can't remember its username. Not worth the hassle of dealing with editors like AlexTheWhovian (talk · contribs) who was so hostile and aggressive, couldn't believe that someone could have a similar name without copying theirs. Other users like MarnetteD (talk · contribs) were annoying saying "AtW I think this is the version you want", just defending Alex even though I was reinstating the established version. Felt like I was being accused of being an experienced user for reading policies before editing and doing something basic before bigger edits. AlexTheWhovian still hasn't tried to discuss the changes in an appropriate manner to change consensus. Thank you to AussieLegend (talk · contribs) and Bilorv (talk · contribs) who supported my efforts. AlexTheDoctor (talk) 10:29, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
E.g. AlexTheWhoian constantly accusing me of being a sock even though it was made clear that I was allowed to make a new account. I didn't read username policies as they aren't relevant to editing so not important and unlikely to ever effect me. AlexTheDoctor (talk) 10:54, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the ping. Funnily enough: Still clear you were satirically copying me. Happy editing, "Alex"! -- AlexTW 11:46, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The fact that I think the edit you made was valid does not mean I endorse your later trolling. The fact that you continue to flagrantly disregard username policies—which do affect you, as you have been told repeatedly—means your block will rightfully remain in place. If you want to get unblocked, you need to make it clear that you understand what you did wrong and request for your username to be changed to something completely unrelated (rather than creating a new account). September 2018[edit]

Your account has been blocked from editing Wikipedia because your username , AlexTheDoctor, appears to be too similar to the username of another Wikipedia user. You are welcome to create a new account with a username that is easily distinguishable, or ask for a request in changing username by:

1. Typing {{unblock-un|user=your new username here|reason=your reason here}} on your user talk page.

2. You will have 24 hours to fill in an unblock request for a change of username before you get re-blocked.

If you feel that you were blocked in error, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below, but you should read our guide to appealing blocks first. Thank you. 331dot (talk) 09:24, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Request reason:

My name has been Alex and I have a doctorate, hence my name. I didn't check every other Wikipedia username before making my account. AlexTheWhovian just seems angry that I reverted his BRD edit because it looked worse. I am not associated with any other user or IP.

Decline reason:

I don't buy it. Your first edit was to revert an edit from AlexTheWhovian. You clearly knew about that other user. Yamla (talk) 12:14, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Someone else will review your request, but "AlexTheDoctor" seems to be an attempt to have a similar name to "AlexTheWhovian", As "The Doctor" is the main character in Doctor Who, fans of which could be called Whovians. Even if you meant no such thing, it would be better for you to choose a new name. 331dot (talk) 10:00, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not a fan of the show so didn't realise and it's just a coincidence. I have since created a new account AlexTheEconomicDoctor (talk · contribs). AlexTheDoctor (talk) 10:13, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@331dot: I still believe the editor is attempting to be satirical given their new name. -- AlexTW 11:57, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You're free to believe what you want but I didn't know your username before I created my first account. You don't own every username related to yours. AlexTheEconomicDoctor (talk) 12:00, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Furthermore, the above editor continues to edit from an alternate account, even though they were made aware that creating another account when the first one was blocked is against Wikipedia's sockpuppetry guidelines. -- AlexTW 12:02, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Because you reported me for a petty, not valid, reason. I changed my username. My edits are on discussions, not articles. AlexTheEconomicDoctor (talk) 12:12, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You did not. You violated a policy, SOCK. Try again. -- AlexTW 12:14, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Yamla: As the declining admin, what are your thoughts on the above editor creating a new account? -- AlexTW 12:16, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You seem like an established user and should have much less of a hostile attitude to new users. AlexTheEconomicDoctor (talk) 12:26, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm asking the administrator, thank you. -- AlexTW 12:28, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The block was solely because of the username, so the creation and use of AlexTheEconomicDoctor is legitimate. The user is on a path to be blocked soon for WP:EW, and I make no claim that the new username is appropriate. I think it's borderline, especially given the ludicrous claim here that the user was unaware of AlexTheWhovian, but I'll leave that to 331dot to consider. --Yamla (talk) 12:36, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response. I'll wait for 331dot as well, and debate on later reporting the editor to UAA again for being deliberately satirical in their name choices. -- AlexTW 12:38, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I am not edit warring. It's not a "ludicrous claim", coincidence that I edited that page first. I haven't edited any others due to this matter. Whovian seems to edit a lot of pages so it's likely we would meet anyway so it's only a matter of time before he got pathetic and defensive about "his" name. Whovian has a terrible attitude to new users especially. AlexTheEconomicDoctor (talk) 12:44, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Two editors and multiple editors at ANI believe you created it out of spite. Your opinion is noted but not paid attention to. Cheers. -- AlexTW 12:47, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
ANI? They can believe what they want but I wasn't aware of you and our terrible attitude before I created the account. If this happened to most other users I'd hope they would have a much better attitude. Condescension is not useful to anyone . AlexTheEconomicDoctor (talk) 12:53, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You're already under suspicion. Quit while you're ahead, IP sock. -- AlexTW 12:54, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You have no evidence that I'm the IP so stop making that false accusation. AlexTheEconomicDoctor (talk) 12:56, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I will, when you admit, IP. -- AlexTW 12:58, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The individual has been softblocked specifically to allow them to create a new account with a name that doesn't violate the guidelines, doing so is not sockpuppetry. Per WP:SOFTBLOCK "This is generally used in situations such as blocking promotional usernames or to enforce other username policy violations. This allows the blocked account to register a new account with a username that is in compliance with the username policy, or simply choose to edit anonymously under the IP if they decide not to do so." The new name AlexTheEconomicDoctor, is still too close to another user's name (as such it too was blocked). If you wish to accuse them of being a sock then go open an WP:SPI otherwise it is not appropriate to be WP:Casting aspersions on them and you should just WP:AGF. -Obsidi (talk) 18:06, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I can't create a new account, only edit this page. I thought making this account would be good enough disambiguation. Didn't realise usernames similar to others are against any rules. I stand by what I said about not knowing Whovian's name before making my first account. Whovian has been very hostile in all communications, not assuming good faith or welcoming a new user. As AussieLegend (talk · contribs) has said on the Big Bang Theory talk page which I can't edit to thank, I did nothing wrong by making this account as I was given the option of creating a new account and username to solve the original problem which I thought I did. Whovian has consistently accused me of being a "sock" and an "IP", first of which is wrong and second is a false accusation with no evidence. AlexTheDoctor (talk) 18:25, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • I am currently not in a position to evaluate the whole situation, but it seems to me that this users biggest problem is not their name. It will likely be many hours before I can comment further; any admin may do whatever they feel appropriate without waiting for me. 331dot (talk) 13:55, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
For the record, AlexTheDoctor was referring to this past that I made at Template talk:The Big Bang Theory. The discussion there is completely off-track.
@AlexTheDoctor: - You need to take the first option in the block notice at the top of the page. i.e. Type {{unblock-un|user=your new username here|reason=your reason here}} below. You need to pick a username that is sufficiently different to "AlexTheWhovian" or your request will likely be denied. --AussieLegend () 18:29, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thank you for your advice and unbiased analysis of situations. I'll try and change it but I don't want to change it too much as I've used AlexTheDoctor on other websites without argument and I don't want to give in to someone with such a bad attitude. Whovian changed the contents of the template significantly, making a BOLD edit, even though he discussed it with you two years ago and lost the argument. AlexTheDoctor (talk) 18:43, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • It doesn't matter about creating the "EconomicDoctor" account — that's a red herring — but this is obviously an experienced user. Alex, your very first edit had the edit summary "Undid revision 861724706 by AlexTheWhovian (talk) This version is established so per WP:BRD you need to stop reverting and discuss."[1] Why are you pretending to be a new user, for instance here? If this is a clean start, there's no need to be coy about it. On the other hand, if it's a sock of an account you're still using, or if you're returning to old disputes and trying to avoid scrutiny, that's something else. See the introduction to Wikipedia:Clean start. I agree with 331dot that your biggest problem is not your name. Bishonen | talk 21:46, 30 September 2018 (UTC).[reply]
I've skim read WP articles and edit summaries before, BRD is commonly cited. 06:33, 1 October 2018 (UTC)
Really? I cited a single example. You consistently use Wikipedia jargon in an easy and familiar way. Do you deny having a previous account? Bishonen | talk 09:08, 1 October 2018 (UTC).[reply]
I do deny having a previous account other than the one I created after this one per "You are welcome to create a new account" above. Can you cite any other examples? BRD is commonly used, much more than any policy about usernames. AlexTheDoctor (talk) 15:37, 1 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This page itself is full of examples. As for listing them for you, I refer you to Meta "What is a troll", section "Pestering": I would love to help but I'm rather busy. However, it appears Ymblanter believes you, since he has changed the settings to softblock. That's a piece of luck for you. Bishonen | talk 19:39, 1 October 2018 (UTC).[reply]
