Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution[edit]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from List of distributed computing projects into Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. DanCherek (talk) 21:05, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!
I have included "The table above includes copied content from List_of_distributed_computing_projects" below the edited table I added.
This is my first day of updating a Wikipedia page, so I'm bound to make several more errors... Al Piskun (talk) 21:20, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but the attribution statement belongs in the Help:Edit summary, rather than the article itself. When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

In this instance, I have already fixed the attribution issue in this diff (click it to see my edit summary), so this is just a heads up for any future instances of copying within Wikipedia. Let me know if you have any questions. DanCherek (talk) 21:39, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia and copyright[edit]

Control copyright icon Hello Al Piskun! Your additions to Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 13:12, 8 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for August 15[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Render. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 09:08, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If you are the copyright holder, please read Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for more information on uploading your material to Wikipedia. For legal reasons, Wikipedia cannot accept copyrighted material, including text or images from print publications or from other websites, without an appropriate and verifiable license. All such contributions will be deleted. You may use external websites or publications as a source of information, but not as a source of content, such as sentences or images—you must write using your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously, and persistent violators of our copyright policy will be blocked from editing. Hello, Al Piskun,

Please do not put article redirects on a category page. That will cause that page to show up on a list of pages need to be fixed or deleted (which is how I came across this page). Category redirects use a special template, Template:Category redirect, and they are always kept empty. They point to a related category that actually contains the pages that a reader might expect to find in the category redirect.

If you have any further questions about editing, redirects, categories or templates, please bring them to the Teahouse. Thank you! Liz Read! Talk! 22:01, 10 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You created Category:BOINC Project. We already have :Category:Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing projects. What is your plan? If you want the old category to be renamed then category renames must be discussed first. See Wikipedia:Categories for discussion. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:16, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for getting in touch. This started when I tried to remove Category:Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing projects from Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing because it is not a project, but the category still showed when I removed it. I tried to fix that by creating a category from an existing WikiData Entry - BOINC Project and categorizing them as Category:BOINC Project which is also in the has part(s) section of Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing wikidata entry. I see now that the Category:Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing projects on Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing page came from Template:BOINC projects so I'll back out my category moves and redirect the BOINC Project category to Category:Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing projects and maybe point to that in the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing wikidata entry.

A tag has been placed on Category:POEM@Home indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself. Liz Read! Draft - iThena Project Wiki Page[edit]

Hi Al Piskun! Cloud you please help me edit the Draft:iThena? I need help editing this page. Bam123456 (talk) 09:43, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

To me that is a beautiful draft. However, it was declined 3 times because references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article even despite your attempts to prove otherwise.
I don't know how to convince folks of the importance of this project and that the draft qualifies but maybe I can trim the page down a bit and add the importance of internet mapping in general. I'll think about this. Al Piskun (talk) 13:36, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
