Disambiguation link notification for February 3

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited La Mañana, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Catalan (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Orphaned non-free media (File:Grim Fandango Original Game Soundtrack - CD Cover.jpeg)

Thanks for uploading File:Grim Fandango Original Game Soundtrack - CD Cover.jpeg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:45, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

The only reason why I added it was because his Spanish rank was already there. If there is no source, remove both the Spanish rank and allegiance, my mistake. The Madras (talk) 10:21, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Richard H. Shultz may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "[]"s and 1 "{}"s likely mistaking one for another. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:
  • *''{http://www.usafa.edu/df/inss/docs/StrategicCulture.pdf|Global Insurgency Strategy and the Salafi
  • edu/df/inss/docs/StrategicCulture.pdf|Global Insurgency Strategy and the Salafi Jihad Movement]'' (Boulder, CO: Institute for National Security Studies, 2008).

Just a quick note

Thanks for all the extra work you are doing to improve Grim Fandango, particularly in light of the upcoming remastered version. --MASEM (t) 17:13, 12 October 2014 (UTC)

Hello Masem, thank you for your very kind note. It means a lot coming from you. I have seen how you have been an active and responsible contributor in keeping up the quality of the article. I appreciate you taking the time to send this message. Indeed, it is exciting to hear that a remastered version is in the works, by no other than Tim Schafer. There is talk that they will be releasing much more information on "the making of" the original game, and I look forward to having the article expanded and enriched by that new info when it comes out, as well as all the new reactions by the press. In the meantime, I am trying to make any enhancements possible to reflect the quality of the game, and yes, prepare for the new release. Thank you. (talk) user:Al83tito 00:10, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Map of the Northeast Passage and Northern Sea Route along Russia and Norway.pdf

Thanks for uploading File:Map of the Northeast Passage and Northern Sea Route along Russia and Norway.pdf. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Diannaa (talk) 00:39, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

Thank you for your careful on-going review. I have followed your directions and I have edited the main page and talk page to include more details on the fair use rationale. Thank you. (talk) user:Al83tito 15:17, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. "Archived copy"

Hello, it appears that you have recently been running conversions of unarchived sources, to archive and preserve them here. However, it appears that citations that head previously not had a title, such as most at Accolade (company), simply received "Archived copy" as their title. Now, every sources says "Archived copy. Archived from the original [...]". I wondered if you could ajust that, or if there are bare links in an article first run WP:REFILL, and IAbot later on, so to prevent such occurences? Thanks! Also, I will now revert your edit to the above article and use REFLINKS on it, you can apply your archives again afterwards . Cheers! Lordtobi () 08:22, 6 July 2017 (UTC)

Adding archived snapshots when not needed, at Steampunk and possibly others

Hello. I've just reverted the addition, via IABot, of 84 archive snapshots at Steampunk, to references whose main URLs are still live, at the cost of an additional 13k bytes to the page. I view this as unnecessary. You, or perhaps someone else, has done this twice before to other articles on my watchlist, one of which I reverted and one I left alone. Could you please explain why you're doing this and what policy or guidance, if any, you're following? Dhtwiki (talk) 11:18, 6 July 2017 (UTC)

Dear @Dhtwiki:. Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns. Most links eventually die out, aka Link rot. A solution to that is those websites be archived, and the have the archived page be cited. For the information in any wiki article to survive linkrot, it needs to be backedup. If you think about the long-term preservation of the information in any wiki article, webarchiving and citing is essential. Othewise, wikipedia rules states that information not properly backed up and verifiable by a cited source, may be deleted.
That is why Wikipedia rules also plainly state that: Editors are encouraged to add an archive link as a part of each citation, or at least submit the referenced URL for archiving, at the same time that a citation is created or updated. (Wikipedia:Link rot)
So let me ask three clarifying questions so I can better understand where you are coming from:
1) Do you think that the websites cited will remain available forever?
2) If you think that at some point will disappear, would it be good to have them archived and archived-cited? If eventually that will happen, what is the advantage of postponing the archive-citing to later?
3) Finally, I seem to see that part of your concern is article size. Why is this a concern?
Wikipedia rules do point to guidelines on optimal article sizes, but that "These rules of thumb apply only to readable prose (found by counting the words (...) and not to wiki markup size."
I would be eager to understand better your concerns.
My contribution is in goodwill. The archiving and cite-archiving of references has zero impact on the actual content/information of the article, while it improves citations by making them more resilient to linkrot, therefore making those citations more durable. Thank you.(talk) user:Al83tito 18:35, 10 July 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for getting back to me. In your above quote of WP:LINKROT is the phrase "...at the same time that a citation is created or updated." This implies that the editor who sets up the reference, or who has carefully examined it, would be the one to set up the backup URL, not someone who is running a bot that makes massive changes, where the operator can't possibly be checking the output for accuracy (IABot has been known to point to useless snapshots or give other erroneous information, such as declaring a link permanently dead when it's not). I don't see your account anywhere on Steampunk's edit history and you should have at least one edit to your credit; however, am I safe in assuming that you're not otherwise active on that page?
With regard to your clarifying questions: 1) Who's to say that a particular archive site will live forever, or that links to its archive shapshots will forever work, or that Wikipedia won't radically alter the way its references work?; 2) When some links go dead, it's a good idea to have a backup to access; but for others, such as socio-economic data that is regularly updated, the better strategy is apt to be to link to the most recent update, rather than continue to access the old; 3) Optimal article size is in regard to what readers can comfortably read; but wiki-markup still affects how long it takes for a user's device to load and render a page, as well as making it more difficult for copy-editors, such as myself, to scan plain text in raw mode. New Page Reviewing

Hello, Al83tito.

I noticed you've done some constructive editing recently.
Would you please consider becoming a New Page Reviewer? Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; currently Wikipedia needs experienced users at this task. (After gaining the flag, patrolling is not mandatory. One can do it at their convenience). But kindly read the tutorial before making your decision. Thanks. Replaceable fair use File:Richard Felix Staar.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Richard Felix Staar.jpg.

Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:02, 17 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:15, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
