Template:COVID-19 pandemic data/Republic of Ireland medical cases getting too long?

Hi I noticed that you removed the COVID-19 pandemic data/Republic of Ireland medical cases template from the COVID-19 pandemic in the Republic of Ireland Wikipedia page. I agree with what you said in your edit summary, I definitely think that the template is getting too long to read comfortably, and it will only get worse each day as more data is added. I suggest that we could have a separate COVID-19 pandemic data/Republic of Ireland medical cases template for each month to overcome this issue, one for the data from February and March, one for the data from April and one for the data from May. We could just display a template that has the data from May on the main Wikipedia page. Would you care to share your thoughts on what I've said? I would appreciate it, thank you. 31.187.4.94 (talk) 12:04, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

@31.187.4.94: That's fine. I removed it because it was preventing other templates from showing up on the page. Make sure to check that you don't get a "Template size too large" message when you preview the page. --Ahecht (TALK

Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice

Hi Ahecht, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.

Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.

To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!

Sent to all Articles for Creation reviewers as a one-time notice. To opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your user talk page. Regards, Sam-2727 (talk)

Regarding this edit — please review WP:POLITICIAN. "a former state representative" necessarily qualifies the subject for notability. Nyttend (talk) 11:49, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

@Nyttend: You're not the first to call this to my intention. My understanding was that, with the exception of cases like WP:PROF which specifically states that it is an independent alternative to WP:GNG, SNGs are always subsidiary to WP:GNG. WP:POLITICIAN says right at the top that meeting one or more [additional criteria] does not guarantee that a subject should be included. The subject of the draft didn't meet WP:BASIC, as they had no non-routine significant coverage that I could find, and WP:POLITICIAN says at the bottom that pages failing basic criteria but meeting additional criteria should be merged into broader articles. Apparently, it is an unwritten rule that this doesn't apply to politicians, based on a loose interpretation of one of the footnotes in that section, but if that is the intent it should really be stated explicitly (or WP:POLITICIAN should be split from WP:Notability (people) altogether). --Ahecht (TALK
PAGE
) 18:34, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
Let me be clearer: nobody accepts your interpretation, because this is already explicitly stated, and it is disruptive to decline a draft on notability grounds when project consensus holds that the statements given in the draft demonstrate notability. Do not continue, at pain of being blocked. Nyttend (talk) 18:47, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
@Nyttend: There's no need to bring that level of WP:ABF here and escallate a simple disagreement over a good-faith policy interpretation from 0 to block threats like that. At no point, other than my initial decline of the draft based on my reading of the policy, have I done anything that goes against project consensus. I did not bring the article to AfD, I did not !vote delete in the AfD, I have not declined any other politician drafts for failing to meet WP:BASIC, and while it has now been pointed out to me that that draft was part of a contentious discussion at ANI, I was not aware of at the time. I have abided by the project consensus since it was made clear and fully intend to continue to do so, and I understand that our documentation is supposed to reflect the consensus (not the other way around).
All I was saying is that our documentation fails to explicitily state that Wikipedia:Notability (people)#Basic criteria and Wikipedia:Notability (people)#Failing basic criteria but meeting additional criteria do not apply to Wikipedia:Notability (people)#Politicians and judges, and that my interpretation at the time was that the footnote about ensuring that coverage of major political offices, incorporating all of the present and past holders of that office, will be complete regardless was that that goal would be satisfied by the suggestion to merge such pages into broader articles. If anything, I'm arguing to update the documentation to allow such articles, not the other way around.
Let me be clearer: I'm not trying to say that my decline reflected consensus or that the article should be deleted, just that my decline was done in good faith based on a reasonable reading of the (often imperfect) documentation available to me. --Ahecht (TALK

A tag has been placed on File:Holiday World Logo.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused duplicate or lower-quality copy of another file on Wikipedia having the same file format, and all inward links have been updated.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Hi, Ahecht. Thanks for splitting out those charts from COVID-19_pandemic_in_Wisconsin#Statistics_by_county. Help

Hi, I've been testing the Tenplate:Medical cases chart in Spanish Wikipedia (es:Usuario:Selva15469/Taller). Everything seems fine but the number of deaths data is hidden/not showing. Can you please spot the error in the module and correct it? (es:Módulo:Gráfica de casos médicos) Thank you. Selva15469 (talk) 03:33, 25 July 2020 (UTC)

@Selva15469: Deaths are automatically displayed in the second column only if |right2= is set to the "noOfDeaths" or "noOfDeaths2" values from es:Módulo:Gráfica de casos médicos/i18n. Otherwise, you have to use |right2data= to tell it where to get the data from.
The easy way to fix it is to set |right2=# de muertes, which should work automatically.
You can also manually specify the column by setting |right2data=1 (since the first number entered after the data in the data section is the number of deaths, set it to 2 for recoveries, 3 for total confirmed, etc.). --Ahecht (TALK

Hi, Thank you for your quick response. I tried as per your instructions but it's still not working. It's working only when I change 'de muertes' to 'of deaths' on es:Módulo:Gráfica de casos médicos/i18n. But it have to show as 'de muertes'. Can you please correct the error on your own? Moving drafts

With all due respect, but you have caused more mess then there should have been with this moves. You now turn the original redirect for the article the drafts contents should have gone to into another redirect called 2020 FIA World Championship which you redirected to the 2020 formula one championship article. However there are five different FIA World Championships so why pick F1 as the target? There simply should have been a merge. That’s the easiest and cleanest procedure.Tvx1 13:33, 10 September 2020 (UTC)

@Tvx1: I can move that redirect elsewhere, I was just getting it out of the way (I moved it to Formula One 2020 World Championship). A merge would not be clean because it would not carry over the attributions of the many editors who contributed to the draft, and would require an administrator to do a messy history merge. Merges are never done to redirects for exactly that reason. --Ahecht (TALK
PAGE
) 13:39, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
That attribution can easily be provided in an edit summary. Also a history merge would not be messy at all in such a case, since it would only require to entire history of the draft to be copied to the redirect to be turned into the article. Regarding the move, you should have requested a speedy deletion to make way for a move for the redirect instead of moving it. In fact, I suggest you still request it to be deleted on the citeria of housekeeping.Tvx1 13:42, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
@Tvx1: Not if there has been more than one contributor. The draft namespace is intended to be for temporary storage only, and doing that would require keeping the draft around as long as the mainspace article exists (or listing all authors on the talk page, but that is not preferred since it doesn't allow tracking of editor contributions per Wikipedia:Merge and delete#Record authorship and delete history). Please read the introduction to WP:CUTPASTE. Moving a redirect to another plausible location is an accepted method for performing a page move over a redirect where a WP:ROUNDROBIN page swap doesn't make sense (as in this case, where the redirect ends up in Draftspace). --Ahecht (TALK

An article you recently created, COVID-19 cases in Canada by province, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). Episode table templates

Hi Ahecht. The TfD concerning the episode table has now closed as delete, but I still had a few unanswered questions. Why, instead of creating new templates, did you not just use the |dontclose= parameter to start off with, as detailed in the template's documentation? Also, taking a look at the pages that use/d these templates, I came across this edit. This table isn't transcluded anywhere. How does this concern or relate to WP:PEIS? -- /Alex/21 00:16, 14 September 2020 (UTC)

@Alex 21: The vast, VAST majority of pages in mainspace with WP:PEIS errors are those that transclude {{episode list}} as a parameter to {{episode table}}. Other than the rare case where |anchor= is used, there is no reason that should ever be used inside another template, and relying on editors to use an obscure parameter is just going to lead to more broken pages that need to be cleaned up (and using the modules directly to reduce PEIS is a non-starter for anyone using Visual Editor). As to the Doctor Who edit, that was when I was trying to prevent List of Doctor Who spin off audio plays by Big Finish from exceeding the WP:PEIS limit, so I ran the optimization on all pages linked from that page and that used {{episode list}}. --Ahecht (TALK

So, you updated all pages without any consideration of it it was actually needed or not? It doesn't matter if it's obscure. It exists, it does exact the same thing, making your template redundant, and is very clearly listed in the documentation. relying on editors to use an obscure parameter is just going to lead to more broken pages that need to be cleaned up Can you actually provide an example where using |dontclose= has caused troubles? I'd be more than interested in seeing some facts to back up your claim.
In this edit to The Talons of Weng-Chiang, "The Talons of Weng-Chiang" is not a page transcluded to the Big Finish article. You need to go back over the articles you edited and clear up your mistakes. -- /Alex/21 00:03, 17 September 2020 (UTC)
The issue is not that |dontclose= causes troubles, its that editors don't ever use use it. Switching an article to use a more efficient method of transclusion is not a mistake, the mistake is defaulting to an inefficient one in the first place. --Ahecht (TALK

Really? It's already been in used across several articles. Where are you getting that idea?
Merging my replies, as they concern the same discussion. The templates relate to the module code; without the templates, the module code is redundant. Are you saying that while there was a consensus to delete the templates, the module code should have been kept so you could directly invoke it? Is that your position here?
Also concerning using the modules directly to reduce PEIS is a non-starter for anyone using Visual Editor, is that not what you yourself did here? -- /Alex/21 01:02, 17 September 2020 (UTC)

Greetings. Small favor to ask: If this topic has been resolved, can we delete or nowiki the template in this topic so that it doesn't show up as a misplaced template in WP:BADAFD forever and ever? Thanks. --Finngall talk 21:11, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

Import of existing data in new wiki page - possible ?

Hello Ahecht,

you created the Excel2Wiki 9.0, so I think my question is asked to the right person.

I created data the last 20 years in an excel spreadsheet which I want to import in my new created wiki. Is it possible to assign the excel cells automatically into the wiki ?

More precise: Can the cells be put on a defined place in a template ? Or in other words: Is there a way to convert the existing data into the right position of a wiki template ?

I also have the data in htm-files if this is better.

You can contact me by e-Mail: dc-archiv@gmx.net

Best regards,

New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Hello Ahecht,

A chart of the 2020 New Page Patrol Queue

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Reviewer of the Year

John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.

NPP Technical Achievement Award

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

DiscussionTools update

Hello,

The Editing team has scheduled a major update to mw:Extension:DiscussionTools (the new Reply tool) for next week's deployment train. Anyone using your script is probably going to see that update next week, before it's officially released in the mw:Beta Feature system. The new update will use a similar system for starting a ==New discussion==. As before, full-page wikitext editing will not be affected. There is more information on the project page at mw:Talk pages project/New discussion.

You don't have to do anything about this; I just didn't want you to be surprised. If you encounter problems next week, please ping me or leave a note on the talk page for the project. Thanks, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 22:10, 12 January 2021 (UTC)

Dates?

I suppose the few dates at User:Ahecht/Scripts/pageswap#Version history are not correct. Like, "1.3.3, 16 December 2020: Read page names and reasons from form fields in addition to URL so it works from any move page, not just ones linked from WP:RM/TR." that is the correct one, and the ones following it say January 2020? What? "1.3.4, 9 January 2020: Fix reading destination from form field if destination is not in article namespace." Am I wrong? Or is there a typo? 2021? ─ The Aafī (talk) 19:32, 13 January 2021 (UTC)

Using the Articles for Creation script

Hi! Been a while since we interacted last. I noticed that your common.js page imports the Articles for Creation helper script directly from its gadget page. Would it be possible to change to importing it like mw.loader.load('ext.gadget.afchelper');, which uses ResourceLoader? I can also make the edit if you want. (I'm asking because after the change, I can remove some code from the helper script, which makes it faster for everyone who uses it. If you don't respond in a week or so, I'll make the change anyway - it will absolutely not result in any observable changes on your end.) Thank you! Enterprisey (talk!) 08:50, 1 March 2021 (UTC)

@Enterprisey: Thanks for the reminder that I was importing that manually. I had been doing that because I was using a computer that had to use an old version of Internet Explorer that wasn't compatible with the newer script, but thankfully that situation has been remedied. I've switched back to using the gadget. --Ahecht (TALK
