Request to edit Colombia Reports controversies' page[edit]

Hi y'all,

The Colombia Reports page contains a controversy attributed to me I suggest to rectify.

The page says "In April 2015, Colombia Reports' editor-in-chief Adriaan Alsema published a series of articles claiming that between 2003 and 2007, US military personnel and contractors had sexually abused many Colombian children. By June 2015, it was discovered that the source for these articles was faulty and Alsema was forced to retract those stories, expressing regret that he "felt responsible for having spread an urban myth".

What is incorrect is that I didn't publish a series of articles, but one. I deleted this article at one point because people kept sharing it. A link here might be appropriate though. https://web.archive.org/web/20150928061842/http://colombiareports.com/more-than-54-colombian-girls-sexually-abuses-by-us-military-report/

What is also incorrect is that "By June 2015, it was discovered..." In early May, I published the results of a follow-up investigation journalist Manuel Rueda of now-defunct news website Fusion and I conducted, debunking the faulty claim in the initial article. https://colombiareports.com/while-us-army-chases-possible-urban-myth-other-colombia-sex-crime-charges-are-ignored/

When I found out other media were replicating the false claim made from the first article, also in early May, I published an editorial to debunk it again. https://colombiareports.com/how-i-helped-a-pseudo-scholar-spread-anti-american-propaganda/

It was after this article I was invited to NPR to discuss the matter in early June. https://www.wnyc.org/story/worse-nothing/

Considering this is about my own work, I would like to ask somebody else to verify and make corrections if deemed appropriate.

Thank you,

  • Based on the messages you have left on my talk page, I'm thinking it may be best to block your account until you contact the Volunteer Response Team] via email to verify your identity. Unless you can show where you've contacted them before? —C.Fred (talk) 02:15, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Adriaan, een link naar een kopie van je paspoort is het LAATSTE wat je moet doen. Drmies (talk) 18:24, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Adriaan, I really don't care about your politics or lack thereof, or how reliable Colombia Reports is; what I do care about is this kind of stuff: one more "New World Order" global conspiracy claim and I will block you indefinitely. Really, "the use of the word "soccer" is considered a capital offense" is probably enough for an indef block. And you can't claim to be "put in danger" if you handle your personal information so carelessly. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 18:30, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Drmies: Dank je wel voor de ingreep. The one-time act of vandalism was a desperate attempt to see my concern addressed. Please understand that the politicization of journalism may be a non-issue in regards to security in the US or the Netherlands, but it greatly increases the level of threat to journalists in Colombia. My urgency is because of the death threats and the fact I already lost a colleague. I don't even care about politics, let alone my website having a political "editorial line." I don't understand how interpreting my work as pursuing some political agenda is in any way factual or informative, it does pose a threat any press freedom organization will confirm. I am reporting on armed conflict and political violence, not football. I hope you're willing to address my concern and remove that part on the Colombia Reports page. There's other inaccuracies there I am glad to clarify if you care to correct them. Don't worry about any vandalism from me. I love Wikipedia. I haven't contributed much, but the times I have was because I believed my expertise was useful. Heel vriendelijke groet. Adriaanalsema (talk) 19:42, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wait, that was a deliberate act of vandalism just to draw attention? Kom op zeg. I don't know what your concern is, really; is it related to this edit? A word of advice: don't make it so hard for others. I had to look through all your edits and related edits to get to this. The long reams of text you leave on others' talk pages aren't helpful either: no one cares whether you're atheist or leftist or whatever, whether you preferred Focus or Kayak (Kayak sucks, of course). Well, that Gypsy editor seemed to care, and I am about to look into it. Sit tight--and don't do any more, eh, domme dingen please. Drmies (talk) 23:05, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Drmies: I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, also to :@C.Fred:, but my personal security was being compromised. I was not being frivolous, but desperate. https://rsf.org/en/colombia

I didn't even see the "anarchist" part, which ironically is accurate and harmless. What is false and a threat to my personal security are claims my website has a politically motivated agenda. You have no idea how grateful and relieved I am this has been removed.

My work has been cited in academic papers, in court and in Congress both in Colombia and the US, I'm regularly consulted both by the public and private sector. If I can compensate for the inconvenience by dedicating a few hours a week to Wikipedia, hook me up with whoever coordinates matters related to Colombia and I'll get to work. Thank you both for your time and understanding. Don't worry about me doing stupid things. I'm at your service. Adriaanalsema (talk) 00:49, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
