Definition[edit]

Vintage clothing means clothing from a previous era. Today vintage dressing includes choosing accessories, mixing vintage clothes with new, as well as mixing many different styles and accesories.[1]

Vintage clothing can be found in cities at local boutiques, local charities, or also on the internet. Goodwill is a popular place to donate or shop for vintage clothing.

Clothing made before the 1920s is called antique clothing and clothing from the 1920s to 20 years before the present day is named vintage.[2] [| Retro], or "vintage style," usually means clothing that copies the style of an earlier era. Clothing produced more recently is usually called modern or contemporary fashion. Most vintage clothing has been worn before, but some have not.

Sizing[edit]

In the United States, because of clothing sizes changing, vintage sizes are usually smaller than modern clothes.

Retail market[edit]

Popular places to buy vintage clothing include garage sales, thrift stores, flea markets, antique markets, and vintage clothing shops. [3] Vintage clothing is sometimes also gotten from older friends and relatives. Many vintage clothing stores also buy clothing from people in exchange for cash.

The internet has created an easy way for people to buy vintage clothing. Popular places to buy clothes are online websites, and online vintage clothing shops. Many vintage clothing shops with physical locations now also sell their goods online.

History[edit]

Since the beginning of [| World War I] the idea of vintage clothing or reusing clothing was a way of living. During World War I, most clothing was fixed for other family members or reused within the home as rags or [| quilts].[4]

During the 1980s, vintage clothing in [| North America] increased because of the demand for low-priced high- end name brands.[1]

There has also been an increasing interest in how reusing, recycling and repairing clothes can help the environment, instead of throwing things away.

Fashion design takes inspiration from earlier time periods. Vintage clothing is very valuable because it is actually from a past era.[5] Also, real vintage clothing is made one at a time, with lots of details to make it last long. Styles that copy original vintage clothing are called "vintage style", "vintage inspired" or "vintage reproductions". These clothes are for anybody who likes vintage style, but want a newer look. They are also usually available in many sizes, colors, and/or fabrics, and can be sold much cheaper.
