Czech music

Thank you for welcome! I would like to focus on Czech music history, composers, compositions and organizing of subject categories (already started). There is one important problem for me. I would like to compose main artcle for Czech music, including history etc. It will take a lot of work and time, but i cannot subscribe it to the article with the name "Music of the Czech Republic". It is nonsensical name, that restricts Czech music to the period from 1993 until now. The redirection of that article (btw. its contemporary level is very poor) from Czech music is absolutely uncomprehensible for me. Please, let me know, if there is some real chance to solve that problem without annyoing discussions about things, that are utterly clear. Thanks. Jan Blanický 11:48, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

I completed a wikimedia editors survey list not long ago and can you believe that wikimedia foundation is not fully aware that there are wikipedians in Nigeria!!.

In the form,they convieniently ommited Nigeria,but included many not so African countries.It shocked me because i could not choose from which country i recide.You are a sysop,is there anything you can do? or as more editors come from the Global south,it won't be a problem anymore ? Thanks for putting me right, Antonin. What a shame they missed out the crucial word. It's like mis-spelling a name on a war memorial - what do you do? I took "uprooted" out again and put [sic] after the quote in case anyone else is puzzled like I was. The [sic] looks a bit clumsy, though, so please take it out if you think it's inappropriate. Tagore is a wonderful poet. I knew someone - British Bangladeshi who was recording some of Tagore's poems as files to post on the internet. He spoke the words beautifully. Unfortunately we lost touch when he had some internet problems so I don't know what happened to the poems in the end. I hadn't come across Tagore's poem about the search for the touchstone before Janacek. It's about the human condition but it's also the story of every great/unsatisfied artist (and writer of Wikipedia articles!). There wasn't too much grammatical correction needed, but I've done some rewording and reformulating to help the flow of the article. I added a mention of Heydrich being in Prague at the time of the ambush. I've broken up the long main paragraph for readability's sake. Please don't hesitate to reverse any of the changes you think may have been inappropriate. I hadn't heard the sad history of Anna Letenska, though I remember seeing the film Operation Daybreak back in the 1970s and knew the story of Heydrich and Lidice, in the days when we never contemplated that sort of mass slaughter happening again in Europe. I added a moving quote from Otakar Vavra taken from the Radio Prague item in Spanish you mentioned as an External Link. Unfortunately I'm not very good at "cite" references - when I tried to adapt the "cite" mechanism the reference appeared in "Notes" in a very awkward form. Could I leave it to you to make it consistent? If you give it a refname I can also add the mention of her parents working with an itinerant theatre company and her stage appearance at the age of eight from the Spanish article. I thought I remembered Heydrich having been visiting Prague, but of course as acting Protector of Bohemia and Moravia he must have been based in the city. He was driving to see Hitler in Berlin when the attack took place so that was where I may have got my idea about a "visit" from. My main concern was to establish Prague as the location of the assassination attempt. I'm still not clear bout the idea of the mayor as "host" - do you mean that the mayor is an inn-keeper or hotel-keeper? I'm glad to have been able to assist you in making sure that the brave example of a woman who from Vávra's comment must have had exceptional reserves of inner strength is not left unnoticed outside her own country. Antonin, I'm afraid the reference to being "a guest" isn't too clear either. The problem is that it's not specific enough in the English. My guess is that you mean she was a guest of V&W in their production, rather than, say, that the character of the mayor was staying in a hotel or with friends, but the wording is ambiguous. Your current wording is clearer but still ambiguous. I think a reference to "a guest performance" or "a guest appearance" is what you're after. I'm very used to confusion between "guest" and "host" because of the problem in Spanish where "Huesped" is used for both (particularly confusingly for a "host" in the biological/medical sense). Thanks for the information about the long vowels. The Czech alphabet article is interesting, particularly about the divergence of the Czech and Polish alphabets as a result of the Jan Hus reforms. I thought that the additional information was interesting but I noticed that there were discrepancies, and that was why I thought it wiser to leave the decision on what to use to you, since you know the background history much better than I do and you'd be able to judge the reliability of the information more capably. Certainly the František Filipovský account of the meeting on the tram casts doubt on the Ottonia notion that she spent days on set and nights in Gestapo custody, particularly if she said she had been "summoned ... to the Gestapo, again." Might the original quote have been capable of interpretation alternatively as something like "I am under orders to go back to the Gestapo"? I'm used to having to go back to revise my initial translations in the light of fresh information - knowing the context can be crucial to understanding what's being said. In any case my general view is that it's useful anyway to include a mention of conflicting accounts/evidence in an article since it may encourage someone else with specific knowledge to shed further light on the particular issue. Incidentally I looked on German Wikipedia and didn't find an article on Anna Letenská, only a reference to the film in the article about Fred Breinersdorfer[2]. It's inevitable that, particularly in circumstances like that, information will be incomplete and sometimes confusing. I think a good encyclopaedia acknowledges uncertainty. That's the human condition. Life and history doesn't come in neatly sealed packages. Your second paragraph to me would give an added sense of real life to the article. (Back to the left margin) No, not sloppy, it's the first step that counts! The best is the enemy of the good and it's far better to get things moving than to wait until everything is polished. I was fussy about the Hasan Nuhanović article because of the court case involved and the importance of the precise wording, but if something isn't absolutely crucial it's better to proceed (and perhaps be joined in the effort) than wait and risk never completing anything (personal experience talking!). Incidentally, in case you're interested, the appeal against the District Court ruling that the Dutch State can't be held responsible for the failings of Dutchbat at Srebrenica has been heard but the Appeal Court won't deliver its judgment until early July.Opbeith (talk) 12:10, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

Those of us who can't change the world can at least do something occasionally to make sure the world doesn't forget what shouldn't have happened, like the deaths of the Nuhanović family and the other refugees handed over at Potocari and the execution of Anna Letenská and the other victims of the Heydrich reprisals, including all those children from Lidice who died in Chelmno. It's just your guess. I can't find good arguments for deletion on the talk page. You can't nominate the article for deletion as you edit anonymously. Why do you want to delete the article? Because it is a "list of links to videos"? Wikipedia has a lot of similarly short articles. People here call them stubs. The question is whether the article has some room for expansion. help finding sources in your native language

Can you use Google News archive search and Google Book search in your native language to search for the words "pig slaughter" AND "culture" or "tradition"? A few seconds of searching is usually all it takes to find something. Quicker to just do that than try to reason with someone who, for whatever reason, is determined to delete an article. The problem is that now we have two duplicate artilces:

• 2010-11 Colorado State Rams men's basketball team

Richard Abberbury the Elder

Vejvančický, I am a little confused over my db-userreq request. I seem to have a user page User:Pahazzard/Richard_Abberbury_the_Elder inexplicably linked to the article page Richard_Abberbury_the_Elder. I have checked my actions and it appears that the "History" is identical for both versions? Originally the article should have been "moved" from from my subpage, and all I had wanted to do today was tidy this up by requesting the delete. I think you mistakenly nominated for deletion the mainspace article. You moved the content correctly, see [3]. If you want to delete your user subpage, you have to go directly to the redirect page, located at User:Pahazzard/Richard Abberbury the Elder and nominate it for deletion as {{db-r2}}, {{db-rediruser}}, {{db-u1}} or {{db-userreq}}. Diacritics

Hi, I can see why you are worried, but I think you can relax. While the real world practice in newspapers privileges French, German and often also Spanish and Portuguese, nobody seems to support this for Wikipedia. I first became aware of the current anti-diacritics attacks in relation to German umlauts, and so far I have not seen any user who objected to some diacritics but not also to the extremely standard spelling résumé. And if there will be any exceptions for particularly 'odd' letters, then I am sure it will be for þ, ð (two pre-Gutenberg standard English letters that are still used in Icelandic), ß and the ʻokina, not for any of the Slavic diacritics. Well, some people seem to support this proposal in a very uncompromising way and in this place you never know how terrible the consequences might be. An editor has even borrowed your NYTimes example as an argument in the discussion going on here. Another editor made a research based on G-News search result comparison and divided the names into two groups using and omitting the accent marks. The decision about whether you belong to one or the other group depends solely on the number of Google hits. Can you imagine? It would be a pure mess. Another editor (supporter of this proposal) removed the diacritic from my signature during a discussion on their talk page, but commenting on this really isn't worthy of my time. Perhaps that's why I'm a bit worried, but I can't imagine that this proposal might win broader acceptance. Thanks for your sensible comments, it is good to have a balanced moderator in the discussion. The insularity of contributors to the English Wikipedia has already inflicted substantial damage on the scope of Wikipedia's coverage. It is important to ensure that the use of diacritics doesn't make it difficult for English language/keyboard users to retrieve information but use of Redirect should obviate that problem. Inevitably there will be discrepancies of usage but linguistic purity is surely less important than inclusiveness and comprehensive scope. I think that many established editors here on English Wikipedia don't realize the immense benefits of international editing. This part of the Wikimedia projects is one of the strongest websites in the world, and it is caused to a large extent by our comprehensive coverage that was created by the international editorship. The question of the use of diacritics seems to be a minor problem when comparing with patrolling of new pages or with the organization of deletion areas. Many established editors present themselves as defenders or guardians of Wikipedia rather than competent builders and collaborators. We should ask, explain, help, communicate and collaborate without borders ... But on the other hand, Wikipedia is an open project where everyone participates voluntarily, and I cannot force or oblige someone to do what I want. I know well that I'm a small drop of water in a very large pond and that my knowledge, capacity and skills are limited. I'm trying to learn something. Please stop moving articles without the benefit of an RM

When reading the endless "accent marks" discussion, sometimes I feel the strong need to cry out loudly something like: "Oh dios mio!" "¡Ay Dios mío!" :)

I'm just saying, moving the pages via bypassing an RM & using the edit summary "correcting", will come across as autocratic on the former, arrogant on the latter. I believe my edits are beneficial for Wikipedia, that's all. I move articles on subjects known for their actions in the Czech Republic for years and I didn't receive any warnings that the moves are wrong or damaging to this project. On June 15, Hòa thượng Thích Quảng Đức was displayed as a featured article on our main page with all the terrible accent marks. I thought it is allowed to move the articles. To revenir a nos moutons, per original research (i.e. I've used it in the past) the United Nations has a rigorously applied, routinely updated style manual and although I've not seen a copy for years I've noted that while early English language texts from the ICTY may not have used diacritics - see first K&M indictment of 24 July 1995[4] - diacritics are now standard in the English versions of the official texts, see most recently Mladić's second amended indictment of 1 June 2011[5], not to mention the ICTY website itself. Probably not. He is a POV crusader who never listens to anyone. He is currently at ANI for his behaviour. He is in general a pretty disruptive editor. Pretty much every request for move has gone against him. Over 90% of the people in his centralized discussion told him he was wrong. Excuse me intervening, but is Mr JW not aware of the expression "point of view" when he uses the value-laden word "bad"? JW set out the basic principle of Wikipedia as assembling the sum of all human knowledge - admirable. I'm not clear why he now seems keen on rowing back. A title including diacritics is knowledge/information-richer than one without. As long as no-one is forced to use diacritics in the Eng WP and anyone who gives an article a title including diacritics also makes sure there's a Redirect for a plain text enquiry, who's losing? A title with diacritics informs the native Anglophone reader that there's a pronunciation issue. Although the apparently insular Mr JW may not realise it, perhaps through living in the defensively anti-Hispanic United States, many native Anglophones are in fact interested to know that the pronunciation of a name is not as they would assume it to be at face value. All quite apart from the issue of showing respect for the subject. Why do people spend what precious little time we have on earth (on Wikipedia, whatever) debating whether to open the boiled egg from the big end or the little end? Mechanically stripping off diacritics from a name does not create an English name. It creates an ASCII rendering of the original name. Ha! I got caught in a trap again. Believe it or not, my initial choice was rhinoceros. The text is stolen from a "kitten template" (kitten is replaced by pig). How do you know that I eat pigs? Is that because of my defense of the article pig slaughter? Once I defended an article about a man who is "famous" for having most snails on the face of all people in the world, and I don't enjoy this activity. But I have to admit that I'm carnivorous. When I was a child, my family had a small rabbit farm and I had to kill many of those innocent creatures. If rabbits reign in heaven, I'll end up in darkest hell ... My mother still raises pigs and she always cries when we kill one of them, because she knows how clever and friendly animals they are (I have to go and help with the slaughter, it is a kind of family meeting and celebration). It is the old and vanishing life in Moravian villages, and the "pig slaughter culture" is a part of my life as well. It isn't easy to explain that to a vegetarian. I know that if I want to eat meat, someone has to kill an animal, and it is not a pleasure. Meat does not grow on a tree or in a supermarket in a plastic bag. Am I a barbarian? ... I know that joking in this area could be very sensitive and I hope you are not offended by my strange and archaic opinions. My question was a bit more philosophically open-ended - there may be an element of companionship in all consumption of sentient beings, as the German cannibalism cases of a couple of years or so ago suggested. I think I'm already identified as a bloodthirsty deviant from the way I respond to people who want to delete perfectly good subjects. What I like about Wikipedia is that it can be serious and at the same time - in theory - welcoming to everyone. I think the second part is important, so it's important to make sure the "serious" stuff is there but not leave out the cheerful stuff.

I've become reconciled in old age to the Pikachu characters and their eco-niche. I used to get annoyed because they survived while some of the other creatures I consider more deserving of a place on Noah's Ark got pushed off into the water. However as I've become more aware of the importance of Wikidiversity to the survival of the planet I've also come to understand that the most important quality of all on Wikipedia is the enthusiasm for being involved and a pleasure in assembling knowledge that other people can share. Of course I believe some kinds of human knowledge are fundamentally more important than others but there's no pressing need to engage in neo-Darwinian competition. The important thing is we and the Pikachu enthusiasts have the same interest at heart, and we share the same risk from circling predators and regulators.

So heart buttons have their place. All the same, along with you, I wonder what is the purpose of getting rid of something genuinely useful like the reference generator, particularly (apparently) without asking users beforehand?
