Without much help, and support, Wikimedia Foundation has claimed the current system is unsustainable. Rather than directly dismissing the entire project without any substantial analysis, one should analyse it, and at least make some attempts.

Current circumstances[edit]

Through technical, and loose observations of many editors, it is apparent that till June 2017 most of the reviewing is being done by only 10% of the editors from ~400 editors with the "New Page Reviewer" flag. As of June 2017, each of these top 10% reviewers had reviewed 800 pages per week. Since mid June 2017, up to current day (July 2017), there has been a gradual decrease in the backlog (contradicting the claims of WMF). Before that (prior to mid June), the NPR project was only able to hold the backlog around 21,000 unreviewed pages. As of July 05, 2017 the number of unreviewed pages was 19,334.

Observations[edit]

As most the work is being done by a small number of editors (give or take 40 editors), should few of these editors retire, or for any reason, should their activity decrease on enwiki; the backlog would increase markedly, if not drastically.

Instead of asking the "who is doing the reviewing" or "who isn't"; the project should work on granting the reviewer flag to experienced editors who have demonstrated a clear understanding of Wikipedia policies. Even though the current requirement is "90/500, and understanding of the policies", the standards for giving the flag has gone a little high.

As of July 2017, there are still many experienced (long time) editors who are not aware of the flag. There are many new, but experienced users who have demonstrated understanding of wikipedia policies, but they are not aware of the flag either. Editors from both of these groups appear to be appropriately adding maintenance tags to articles (whether or not newly created).

Strategies for future[edit]

  1. Word should be spread around about this flag, so that more editors worthy of this flag can be granted the flag.
  2. As long as they have a clear record, worthy [a] editor should be granted the flag even if their activity is considerably less currently.
  3. The project should consider to increase the number of reviewers by inviting the worthy[a] editors if such are spotted.

Invitation template[edit]

There is a template to invite worthy editors. Kindly see the documentation page of the template before using it:
{{NPR invite}}

Notes[edit]

  1. ^ a b A worthy editor means an editor passing 90/500 criteria, with no recent edit warring, recent blocks, biting other users among few others
