Toaster Strudel is a brand of frozen breakfast pastry owned by General Mills, Inc. It is marketed under their brand, Pillsbury, formerly the Pillsbury Company. They are convenience food, prepared simply and quickly by heating them in the toaster and then spreading the included icing packet on top of the pastry. The brand has found considerable success, since being deployed in 1985[2][3] as competition with Kellogg's Pop-Tarts.[4] In 1994, its advertising slogan was, "Something better just popped up".[1]

Flavors[edit]

Since the brand's introduction, various flavors of Toaster Strudel have come and gone, and a current list is on the manufacturer's web site.[5] The history of flavors has included the following:

  • Cinnamon Roll made with Cinnabon™ Flavor
  • Cream Cheese & Strawberry

Ingredients[edit]

Toaster Strudel is convenience food (see also junk food), with ingredients that differ markedly from a homemade strudel recipe. One notable difference is in the number of artificial ingredients, including the controversial sweeteners sucralose and high fructose corn syrup.[6] As a representative example of the brand, this is a complete list of ingredients found in blueberry flavored Toaster Strudel:

Enriched Flour Bleached (Wheat Flour, Malted Barley Flour, Niacin, Ferrous Sulfate, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Water, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Palm Oil, Sugar, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean and Cottonseed Oil, Maltodextrin, Corn Starch, Modified Corn Starch, Dry Yeast, Salt, Dextrose, Whey, Blueberry Puree, Egg Yolk, Baking Powder (Baking Soda, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate), Corn Syrup Solids, Citric Acid, Mono and Diglycerides, Propylene Glycol Monoesters of Fatty Acids, Preservatives (Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, TBHQ), Xanthan Gum, Guar Gum, Polysorbate 60, Colored with (Red 40, Blue 1, Yellow 5, Artificial Color), Locust Bean Gum, Natural and Artificial Flavor, Soy Lecithin, Glycerin, Sucralose.[7]

By contrast, a popular apple strudel recipe contains the following:

Flour, water, sugar, butter, milk, apples, eggs, cream, yeast, salt, cinnamon.[8]

Toaster Scrambles[edit]

A similar Pillsbury product, Toaster Scrambles, is a savory toaster pastry with meat and cheese breakfast ingredients. In 2013 two varieties were available:[9]

  • Cheese, egg, and bacon
  • Cheese, egg, and sausage

In popular culture[edit]

In the 2004 teen fiction motion picture entitled Mean Girls, it is said that character Gretchen Weiners's family fortune was established by her father's invention of the Toaster Strudel.[10]
