From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Crashworthy seat is a safety device engineered to protect a seated occupant from injurious decelerative forces. They are typically installed in commercial and military aircraft. Crashworthy seats are designed specifically for each application, yet usually meet a general standard.

History[edit]

Concern over excessive crash injuries and fatilities during the 1960's, led to an increased emphasis on occupant safety[1]. Improved accident investigation techniques helped to improve the understanding of the causal nature of aviation crashes. The insufficient strength requirements of existing military specifications was another key factor discovered during accident investigations.[2] This inspired the initiation of research and development of military aircraft crashworthy seating for both crewmembers and passengers.
