My name is Tamara Sutherland. I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of Alberta, taking an arts degree in Japanese language.

During my high school years, I went on a 1 year exchange to Ritsumeikan High School, in Kyoto, Japan. I had a nice, long commute by Kintetsu and Keihan trains as I went to and from Ikoma, Nara. I can personally say that getting up about 20 minutes earlier to catch the local train was wonderful considering I could sleep for about 50 minutes more on my way to school if I took that train instead of the express.

I am currently active with several groups, based both on and off Campus:

Royal Canadian Air Cadets

I joined the program when I was twelve and my last Parade was the summer when I was 18. I rose to the rank of Flight Sergeant and had the position of Squadron Warrant Officer at 868 RCACS. I have been associated with several squadrons in my six years with the program: 874 Tiger Moth (Edson, Alberta), 868 Rotary Northstar (Fort McMurray) and most recently with 570 Sir Winston Churchill (Edmonton, Alberta). I am now a Second Lieutenant, having been attested in late January 2007.

As well, I was a flight commander for Basic 2006 and 2007 at Penhold ACSTC.

SVCC

I taught advanced English Conversation to immigrants to Canada living in the Edmonton area on the weekends for one term before having to leave the organization due to time commitments.

My interests are:

Languages and Linguistics: Japanese, French, dialectilization and the importing of loan words into languages.

Military History: Mostly WWII, with strong interests in the Dambusters, Operation Chastise (I am a descendant of one of the original squadron members) and the effect that bombing played in the overall turnout of the war. I also have a (somewhat concerned) interest in the build up of American influence as the single super-power in the world following the disintegration of the former USSR and the effects on the ideas of nationality and sovereignty as they have changed during this period.

Science Fiction: Star Trek, Battlestar Galatica and both Stargate series.
