Robert Howard Cantor (born August 26, 1983) is an American singer, songwriter and musician. He is best known as the co-lead singer and guitarist of the alternative rock band Tally Hall, and the creator of multiple viral videos.
Early life[edit]
Robert Howard Cantor was born on August 26, 1983 in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan. His father was David Cantor, an obstetrician gynaecologist.[1] Cantor began taking piano lessons at the age of five and quit the following year. He played the French horn and cornet at middle school, and was taught by his father to play the guitar at the age of 12.[2] As a child, Cantor was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and reached the rank of Eagle Scout.[3]
While studying at Andover High School,[1] he met future Tally Hall bassist Zubin Sedghi and formed a band called listedBlack.[2] Cantor continued his studies at the University of Michigan in 2001,[4] where he majored in cellular and molecular biology[5] and later met the members of Tally Hall.[6] He received a Bachelor of Science in 2005.[4] After graduating, he was accepted into the University of Michigan Medical School, but took a two-year deferral when Tally Hall started to become successful.[1]
Career[edit]
2002–2011: Tally Hall[edit]
In 2002, Cantor met keyboardist Andrew Horowitz through a mutual friend and they began living together. They began performing together with bassist Zubin Sedghi.[7] Shortly afterwards, he met Joe Hawley at a musicology lecture, and they began exchanging emails. Cantor then invited him and Steve Gallagher to join.[8] The band performed under the names Gallagher and 540 before settling on Tally Hall,[9] which was the name of a demolished food court near where the band members grew up.[8] Gallagher left the band in 2004 and was replaced by Ross Federman.[10]
Cantor was the band's guitarist, and shared singing[1] and songwriting duties with Hawley, Horowitz,[6] and Sedghi.[11] The band's members were distinguished by the colour of their neckties, with Cantor's signature colour being yellow.[12] With Tally Hall, he released two studio albums; Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum (2005) and Good & Evil (2011). After the release of Good & Evil in 2011, the band went on an extended hiatus.[13]
