The Hubble Space Telescope (above) one of the most complex instruments ever constructed for natural science research, entered Earth orbit in 1990. It can detect light from near the edge of the observable Universe. Below, the Einstein field equations of general relativity model gravitational interactions in physics, and the large scale structure of the Universe.

The structure of the DNA double helix showing the positions of atoms and their chemical bonds in the molecule (above). Certain groups of atoms represent the genetic code for living organisms. Below, the Schrödinger equation for a single bound electron is a key equation in quantum mechanics, is of a type that may be modified to model the nature of chemical bonds in physics.

A beaker holds water with blue food dye (upper liquid layer) and a much more dense perfluoroheptane (a fluorocarbon) lower liquid layer. The two fluids cannot mix and the dye cannot dissolve in fluorocarbon. A goldfish and a red claw crab have been introduced into the water. The goldfish cannot penetrate the dense fluorocarbon. The crab floats at the liquid boundary with only parts of his legs penetrating the fluorocarbon fluid, unable to sink to the bottom of the beaker. Quarter coins rest on the bottom of the beaker. Animals were rescued from their predicament after the photo was taken.
