Blocking essay[edit]

Write an essay on the blocking policy? Include times when you should block a policy, the preventitve not punitive nature of a block and relevant warnings that should be given before blocking a user whether it be for vandalism or 3RR. Ryan Postlethwaite 18:16, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Block a Policy? :) I'll get to work. J-ſtanTalkContribs 18:38, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
Ok, in keeping with uniformity, I've put the essay here. Lots of slashes, I've noticed. J-ſtanTalkContribs 00:46, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
Yeah I like this essay, I think you have all the key points in with it. The only thing I'd say is that in a nutshell, we block users for disruption, and to protect the encyclopedia. It needs to be made clear that no block should be punitive. Ryan Postlethwaite 21:48, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
One more thing, I would be very careful in wording a 3RR block as a cool down block, it's not - it stops the edit warring that can be very destructive to our encyclopedia, therefore it is protective. Ryan Postlethwaite 22:08, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

BLP essay[edit]

Write an essay in your userspace on the importance to the biography of living persons policy. Include idea's of how administrator's should enforce actions against violators (i.e. warnings, blocks, protections) and also of what the policy means. Ryan Postlethwaite 22:08, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

OK, it's all set. I put it at the top of my sandbox.
And I've placed it at User:Ryan Postlethwaite/Admin coaching/J-stan/Tasks/BLP. :-) Ryan Postlethwaite 17:44, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
Again, I like this essay. However I'd like to point out that many BLP violations are made in good faith by new users. If you remove a BLP violation, you should always warn the user that added it to give them chance to change their ways, after that a block may be in order. With regards to protection, it doesn't have to be due to sock puppetry that an article is protected - often some articles get hit because someone is in the news by different IP's - this would also warrent protection. Ryan Postlethwaite 21:53, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

AfD's[edit]

AfD discussions are very important for any aspiring administrator, they help you to learn key inclusion criteria and show your general understanding of the encyclopedia. It also allows you to see how consensus is judged. Comment on 25 AfD's and list them below so we can take a look at how you're doing with them. Ryan Postlethwaite 22:08, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

  1. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of gay, lesbian or bisexual people (4th nomination) - Keep
Yeah, keep here is certainly what I'd call correct. However, this is the sort of list where there can be some serious BLP violations, if there isn't a source saying that someone on the list is gay(e.t.c.) then it should be removed ASAP.
  2. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Stevie G. - Speedy delete, tagged for A7
Yeah, speedy delete is appropriate here. It was good to see that you tagged it as such as well.
  3. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Actors and actresses considered the greatest ever - Weak Keep
I've got to disagree with you on this one, it looks like a delete here as a completely subjective article. The article is original reasearch and although it has sources, is still the opinion of the article creator.
Yeah, putting Cameron Diaz up as one of "The Greatest Actors Ever" threw up a red flag at first.
  4. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Westland High School (Galloway, Ohio) - Keep
I've nominated high schools for deletion before, but every time they get kept. I'm of the opinion that they should only be kept if there are many many independant sources in the article about them - one of the key parts of WP:N. This article only has sources from the school website, but as you say in your comment - all schools seem to be notable.
Or high schools at least. I found it a little odd that someone used a userfied essay to prove that all schools are notable.
  5. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of suicides (2nd nomination) - Delete
I'd possibly suggest you got this wrong, if the info is verifiable, then perhaps worth an entry. Ryan Postlethwaite 17:49, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
  6. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Goat Rope - Strong Delete
I know this isn't an AfD, but I think I should mention that I put a PROD tag on LSU Tigers football supplemental information. I Put it up for AfD originally, but the result was to Transwiki it to Wikisource. So I took the liberty of transwikiing it, and it was deleted from Wikisource, so I think it should be deleted.
  7. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mark Anthony Fitzpatrick - Again, Speedy Delete per A7.
Yup Ryan Postlethwaite 17:58, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
  8. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Headplay - Delete
Yeah, I couldn't find anything here. Ryan Postlethwaite 17:58, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
This article was speedied originally, and I would tag it for G4 (recreation of deleted material), but the editor has made substantial edits to it.
  9. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hi (magazine) - Nominated, but the result was keep. It seemed to have come to a halt, and I didn't think it was Notable. I was wrong.
  10. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of historical people portrayed as villains - Delete and snow-close.
Yeah, but possibly without the snow close thing. Ryan Postlethwaite 18:04, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
  11. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of pies - Delete
Correct, there's probably a cat for pies any how. Ryan Postlethwaite 18:04, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
  12. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Halo (motion picture) - Delete but I wanted to change to Redirect to Halo (film), but it was already closed.
Correct, per WP:CRYSTAL. Ryan Postlethwaite 18:04, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
  13. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Weißwurstäquator - Unsure Delete. Appears to be a neologism.
  14. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Buffalo Sabres fan - Delete
  15. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of dance video games - Merge with Music video game
  16. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of fast food restaurants - Categorize
  17. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sierra Vista Middle School - Delete
  18. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ayesha Mohan - Speedy Delete per A7, and tagged
  19. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Forest Lost - Speedy Delete per G1. Tagged.
  20. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mildred E. Strang Middle School - Delete
  21. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Untitled Sean Paul album - Delete
  22. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Crusties - Speedy Delete per A7, tagged.
  23. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Last Exile - Plot - Delete
  24. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Obstacles to a democratic world government - Delete
  25. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/CrossRoads Middle School - Nominated. I searched for "Middle school" to see if I could find a middle school to nominate, per WP:OUTCOMES. I found that, and a large amount of elementary schools to nominate on the same page.
  26. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Green Day's Untitled 8th Album - Temporary Delete. I know I reached 25, but I just wanted to add another for good measure.
  1. I won't individually go through the rest, they all look fine. Ryan Postlethwaite 18:12, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks! That was fun! J-ſtanTalkContribs 18:13, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

MfD's[edit]

Over the next week, comment on 10 MfD discussions. Ryan Postlethwaite 22:00, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

  1. Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Gm - Delete
Yeah, good answer. Also possible WP:NOT#WEBHOST. Ryan Postlethwaite 20:09, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
  2. Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Cyde/Don't be a fucking douchebag‎ - Weak Keep
Very much ones own personal opinion this one. A word of advice though - generally speaking, userspace essays do little damage here and reflect the users thoughts, unlike wikipedia space essays, which I guess are supposed to reflect the communities. Ryan Postlethwaite 20:11, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
  3. Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Depression‎ - Delete
I'd have preferred to see more guidlines cited in this comment, a sandbox is a valid use of userspace - WP:NOT would have been appropriate here. Ryan Postlethwaite 00:55, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
  4. Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:WikiProject WikiStandards - Keep but restructure for less bureaucracy.
Valid comment. Ryan Postlethwaite 00:55, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
  5. Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/WP:MOBY‎ - Userfy. It's a good point, but it's redundant within the WP namespace.
Although we have WP:CIVIL, there's room in wikipedia space for essays on particular subjects, userfying is an option, but if it's doing no harm, then there's no real need. Ryan Postlethwaite 00:58, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
  6. Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents/PR - Take to RfC
This is a comment on the dispute, not whether the page should be deleted - it's often best in deletion discussions to remember what you are there to do. Ryan Postlethwaite 01:00, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
  7. Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:WikiProject Professional wrestling/Userbox - Keep one, delete the other. It's a duplicate of another template.
Again, valid. Ryan Postlethwaite 01:00, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
  8. Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Clinic for Wikipediholics - Delete
Open to users personal view, so can;t fault you at all. Ryan Postlethwaite 01:02, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
  9. Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Translation/Name of the article in English - Delete
Yeah I agree in general, but a better comment would have been redirect and protect, or leave informative notice and protect. Ryan Postlethwaite 01:04, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
  10. Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Talk:RAW (rolling paper)/Archive1 - Speedy Keep
Yup. Ryan Postlethwaite 01:04, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

Notability essay[edit]

Write an essay on the notability criteria. You should include all the subsections of the criteria such as WP:MUSIC in the essay.

Sorry this one's taken so long, I should be done shortly. J-ſtanTalkContribs 01:12, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
No time frame, take as long as you need. I'll give you an editor review over the next few days as well. Ryan Postlethwaite 01:18, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
This is my most recent one, unless you would like me to start a new one. Also, I am going on vacation from this Wednesday to next Monday. I'll try to get on Wikipedia during that time, but it will be in very small amounts, if at all. Just wanted to put you on notice. J-ſtanTalkContribs 03:11, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
Done! So I'd like the tasks to be put on hold for a while, I'll start regularly editing next Tuesday. J-ſtanTalkContribs 20:35, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
I'm back. J-ſtanTalkContribs 22:56, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
Good work with this. It's important to emphasize that a claim of notability should have verifiable information that is backed up by reliable sources - that's key to this policy. You've missed out WP:MUSIC which is one of the most important notability guidelines. Add a section on that to the essay then I'll give you another. Ryan Postlethwaite 19:39, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
Oh, duh. I missed the example of what should be included here. Taken care of. J-ſtanTalkContribs 03:12, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
Danke, I'll get thinking of another essay - WP:MUSIC addition looks fine. Ryan Postlethwaite 22:27, 22 November 2007 (UTC)
