From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Greater Manila Area is the name of the urban agglomeration centered on Metro Manila. This area is socially and economically integrated with Metro Manila, serving as the functional metropolitan area. It encompasses parts of the four provinces adjacent to Metro Manila -- Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, and Cavite. The area has a total population of over 17 million (as of 2005) in area of approximately 3000 square kilometers.

The term "Greater Manila Area" is also applied to a wider region consisting of Metro Manila and the entirety of the four adjacent provinces. In this case, the term refers to the labor and media market of Metro Manila. The term "Mega Manila" is often used in this case as well.

Cities/municipalities in the urban agglomeration[edit]

In addition to the 17 cities and municipalities of Metro Manila (total population 10.5 million (2005) over an area of 640 square kilometers), the Greater Manila Area extends beyond the administrative borders of Metro Manila to include the following:

Bulacan (southwestern part)[edit]

1.9 million people in 790 km2

Rizal (western part)[edit]

1.7 million people in 600 km2

Laguna (northwestern part)[edit]

1.3 million people in 360 km2

Cavite (northern part)[edit]

1.9 million people in 610 km2

Notes[edit]

The municipality or city must have a population density of at least 1000 inhabitants per sq. km (as of the 2000 census) and must be contiguous with another included area in order to be considered part of the agglomeration. The municipality/city must also be composed primarily of urban barangays as defined by the Philippine census.
