Kwiecień for beginners[edit]

Disclaimers: This account is relatively short so it is to some descent oversimplified. Note, that some translations may be very offencive. This page is not meant to accuse anybody. That's why all the names of wikipedians are removed from examples.

Kwiecieñ is/was a member of the Polish Wikipedia community who is/was in permanent conflict with a few of its sysops and users. In fact Kwiecieñ had an earlier account called Ergonom with which everything began. (More on Ergonom)

Kwiecieñ opponents' arguments[edit]

Here are the most important arguments of Kwiecieñ's opponents.

  1. Excessive attention seeking
This kind of attention seeking is harmful, because it retracts people from article building and spoils the working mood.
  2. Personal attacks - the use of addresses like
Attacks of this kind spoil the collaboration climate not only between the attacker and the attacked person.
  3. Numerous spoiling of mediation

Kwiecieñ's arguments[edit]

Here are the most important counter-arguments of Kwiecieñ.

  1. Excessive attention seeking - It is not seeking attention for the person, but for problems:
    • of low quality of articles on Wikipedia (that's why he draws attention to articles by aggressive history descriptions),
    • of the sysops attitude who prefer to resort to their privileges than to discuss on the basis of facts an the sources of knowledge and delete articles (List of academic cities), block users with whom are in a dispute (# 09:40, 5 maj 2005; or 13:14, 25 lut 2005 in case of some other user) or change the content of an article when the main discussion is over.
  2. Personal attacks - It is difficult to honour this accusation as the sysops attacked Kwiecieñ as well. One who attacks cannot use this argument. ([1])
  3. Numerous spoiling of mediation
    • Why should Kwiecieñ take part in any mediation while any time it is just humiliation?
    • Why should Kwiecien take part in any mediation while the reasons for his actions are still in
    • The others also do not want any mediation. They prefer their own way to solve problems (using force).
    • Kwiecieñ gave several times his own conditions for peace.

Ergonom[edit]

It seems that Ergonom started editing with some kind of prejudice to sysops [2]. He could see some careless statement by a reputable user on Polish VfD:

Bin. It is unbelievable for me that existence of such a lame leftover can encourage anybody to extend... So, give it a 7 days chance and then, if nothing changes, let it be rubbed out with no regret.

And then he started using similar or even worse language in contacts with the users with whom he got into dispute, mainly with sysops. From this point on all the discussions with Ergonom were extremely personal. At last he was declared a troll (after a vote 8:4 on Polish Village Pump) and a troll picture was inserted into his user page.

Ergonom stopped to edit on April, 18th. Kwiecie¿ had peacefully edited since the beginning of April. The problems with Kwiecieñ began right after the date Ergonom stopped his editing. Kwiecieñ put a manifesto concerning Ergonom on his page which made sysops think Kwiecieñ and Ergonom are the same person (which was proved later on in the Kwiecieñ's RFC case).

The account Ergonom has been deleted which is very unfortunate for the documentation of this case). The things I deduced are based on its edition history.

Kwiecień's discussion page has also been deleted on April, 20th which is again very unfortunate for the documentation of this case.

In both cases, the deletion was apparently not on the user's demand.

Now (07:06, 18 July 2005 (UTC))[edit]

Now, Kwiecieñ is banned on the following conditions - he cannot edit articles for two weeks (even with his sock-puppets). It lasts since June, 11th.

My personal view[edit]

I disapprove the way Kwiecieñ acted because he could use another means to his ends. He still deserves to be treated with regard, though. It is clear that even assuming he had good will he had to be banned (at least temporarily) from the project as his coexistence with many reputable members of the project was not possible. Although, the handling of Kwiecieñ's case was not proper. In fact, much of my enthusiasm for Wikipedia leaked due to it. What's more some people left the project (for instance this and that) because of the handling and the dispute that arose around it.

  • When you say "leaked," I think you mean that enthusiasm "diminished," "waned," reduced," or that people became "less enthusiastic" and "more pessimistic." I only wished to mention this to help you express your point. (I am a native speaker of English, and hope I have helped you here.) I admit that I am unfamiliar with your particular conflict/dispute/situation, and I hope everyone the best, but, as I've stated before, I have found two problems, which may have made this situation worse:
1) People (editors) who contribute to Wikipedia do not get paid a salary, and this reduces or diminishes enthusiasm.
2) These editors are not screened and made to produce identification to prove their identities. This 2nd point is important because people would behave better if their name, photograph, postal (mailing) address, and phone number, and email address were posted on a public website. I realize that some people are more "private," than are others but this might help.
Again, I wish you all the best. Take a look at my websites at Wikipedia and WikiQuotes to see that I post my real address, name, phone number, and photograph, and email as an example. Take care:
