Paul Louis[a] Oudart was a 19th-century French scientific illustrator and painter.

He is known for being the illustrator of Vieillot's Gallerie des Oiseaux, and one of the illustrators of Freycinet's Voyage Autour du Monde. He also illustrated works by Sclater, Webb, Des Murs, and others.

Oudart is credited with describing the Tenerife lizard Gallotia galloti, with a plate in Reptiles de Iles Canaries by Webb, Berthelot, and Gervais.[2]

Oudart married Jeanne Alexandrine Hénoeque, with whom he had at least one son, named August Horace Oudart.[3]

In 1819, his address was given as no. 4 rue Contrescarpe-Dauphine,[b] and in 1831 he is recorded as living and working at 30 rue Saint-André-des-Arcs[c] in Paris.[5]

He died aged 64, in his home at No. 43 rue Dareau [fr] in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, on the evening before 20th May 1860.[d][3]

Career[edit]

Oudart studied under the floral painter Gerard van Spaendonck.[5] In 1819, he exhibited two pieces at the Paris Salon: "Le Coucou Piyae du Brésil, et le Geai bleu de l’Amerique Septentrionale"[e] and "La Perruche de Pennant de la Nouvelle-Hollande".[f][5][6]

The 1831 Dictionnaire des artistes, along with a list of his published and exhibited works, noted that Oudart gave "private lessons in watercolor painting, flowers, animals, and natural history in general, at home and outside".[5]

In the late 1840s, in De Murs' Iconographie ornithologique, Oudart is credited as Peintre attaché au Muséum d'Histoire naturelle de Paris.

He was one of the artists commissioned by Philip Lutley Sclater to produce illustrations for The Ibis from the journal's founding in 1859.[7]

Guérin[g], Oudart contributed illustrations of minerals and animals. (E.g. Geologie pl. X, Zoologie pl. X.) Specifically the lizards, snakes, and molluscs.
