Marc Allum[edit]

Marc J Allum (Born 13 September 1964) is a British antiques specialist, author, lecturer and consultant and is well known for his regular appearances on the BBC television series The Antiques Roadshow where he has been an expert since 1998.

Biography[edit]

Allum grew up in the Warwickshire town of Kenilworth and attended the local schools and sixth form before sitting a University of Southampton degree in English and Media at Weymouth and Bournemouth colleges. His interests as a child revolved around history, collecting and music, his earliest job being as a trainee sound engineer with Phonogram Records. This was quickly superseded by a career change to the world of auctioneering and his first appointment with a then, new London auctioneers, Rosebery Fine Art. He later became a director of the company. Allum's background as a general valuer and all-rounder set him in good stead for early forays into the world of television antiques shows and he appeared on Going for a Song, Moving Day, Heir Hunters, Discovery Television and Bargain Hunt. However, in 1998, he found his true home on the Antiques Roadshow'' and has subsequently appeared on The 20th Century Roadshow and Priceless Antiques Roadshow where he was profiled in his 17th century French Château. Latterly, his work is mainly centered around his writing and consultancy. He works closely with the well-known Yorkshire based auctioneers - Tennants of Leyburn, a family business set up over 100 years ago. He represents them in the South West and at their regional Rutland office. He was appointed as a 'Heavy Artillery' mentor for the 2014 Antiques Young Guns campaign.

Allum is an inveterate collector and spreads his interests widely. Recent notable discoveries and story-lines on the Antiques Roadshow include a rare 1932 Leica II Luxus 35mm camera which was sold by Bonhams in Hong Kong for over $600,000. It was - for a while - the most expensive object ever sold after appearing on the show.

Allum lives in a medieval Burgage house in the Wiltshire market town of Chippenham. Allum is a Burgess and Freeman of the town and a trustee of Chippenham Borough Lands Charity, an organisation set up under a royal charter granted by Queen Mary in 1554. The original charter can be seen in Chippenham Museum. Allum is an avid bass guitarist.

Allum is an established antiques journalist and commentator and has written for a number of publications over the years. His work includes articles and commissions on antiques, collectables, architecture, cars, luxury lifestyle, travel and ever-so-slightly irreverent and satirical pieces on the art and antiques market.
