Herbert Stanford Klein is Gouveneur Morris Professor Emeritus of History at Columbia University. specializes in the social, demographic, and economic history of Latin America. Additionally, he has taught methodology classes on Quantative Methods in Historical Research and Demographic History at United States, Latin American and European universities.

Klein's notable achievement as a historian is the depth and breadth of his work. He was made contributions to the understanding of the slave trade in the Americas, fiscal history of the Hispanic American colonies, social and economic history of Latin America, and specifically of Bolivia and Brazil (covering the colonial period, the 19th and twentieth centuries up to the present). Finally, he wrote a very very well received first demographic history of the United States.

Childhood and education[edit]

Klein was born in New York City on January 6, 1936, to Emil Klein, an accountant who had immigrated to the United States from Hungary, and Florence Klein, a seamstress.

Klein was initially schooled at Rockaway Highschool in Queens before attending Syracuse University for two years. He then transferred to the University of Chicago where he completed his BA in 1957. He proceeded to his master and worked under Stanley Elkins and obtained his degree in 1959. For doctorate he worked under J. Fred Rippy but was also exposed to the teachings of Eric Wolf in anthropology, George Blanksten in political science and
