ProtoStar Ltd a company, based in San Francisco, California, United States which operates the ProtoStar I and ProtoStar II satellites over Asia. The two satellites are primarily used for DTH broadcasting to the Asia region.

The company is named for a newly forming star, a ProtoStar.

History[edit]

ProtoStar Ltd was formed in in early 2005 and registered in Bermuda, with its headquarters in San Francisco, California, USA. The company obtained financing in 2005 and 2006 in order to begin purchasing a satellite and launch vehicle.

In January 2007 ProtoStar Ltd, signed a contract with Space Systems Loral for the ProtoStar I satellite[1]. The ProtoStar I satellite was the former ChinaSat 8. On July 7, 2009 the ProtoStar I satellite was launched from French Guiana on an Ariane 5 rocket and placed into a geostationary orbit at 98.5 degrees East Longitude.[2]

In January 2008 ProtoStar Ltd. singed a contract with the Boeing Company for the ProtoStar II satellite.[3] The ProtoStar II satellite was previously the PanAmSat G8iR satellite[4].

On May 16th, 2009 the ProtoStar II satellite was launched from the Baikonur, Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan on a Proton rocket and placed into orbit at 107.7 degrees East Longitude.[5]
