TeX Gyre Heros[2] is a free implementation of a typical mid 20th century neo-grotesque font. It is a derivative of the free edition of Nimbus Sans L with enhanced letter forms, additional glyphs and metrics compatible with Adobe Helvetica. Nimbus Sans itself was created by URW++ and is inspired by Helvetica, also known by its original name Neue Haas Grotesk.

Background[edit]

The design goal of TeX Gyre Heros was to create a free replacement for the Adobe Helvetica font family that is one of the 10 base font families defined in PostScript Level 2. Although it was created to be used with TeX it is suitable for any desktop publishing software that supports the Adobe Type 1 or the OTF font format.

License[edit]

The TeX Gyre Heros font family was published under the GUST Font License.

Styles[edit]

The font family contains eight styles: regular, italic, bold and bold italic (qhvr, qhvri, qhvb, qhvbi) and the condensed counterparts (qhvcr, qhvcri, qhvcb, qhvcbi).

TeX Gyre Heros was published in the OTF, Type 1 and TFM formats.

Glyph Range[edit]

All eight font files, qhvb, qhvbi, qhvr, qhvri, qhvcb, qhvcbi, qhvcr, qhvcri, contain the same repertoire of 1089 characters.[3]
