Club General Belgrano is a football team from Santa Rosa, La Pampa, Argentina. [1][2]

Background[edit]

Club Defensores de Belgrano was founded on 28 April 1919 in Santa Rosa, the capital of the La Pampa Province. The club name was later shortened to Club General Belgrano and the nickname of Tricolores was adopted reflecting the three colours of black, red and white on the club shirt.[2][3]

The team currently plays in the Liga Cultural de Fútbol de La Pampa, a regional league of Argentina. The Liga Cultural is part of the sixth level of the Argentine football league system. The most successful period in the club's history was from 1995/96 to 2000/01 when Club General Belgrano spent 6 seasons in the Torneo Argentino A, the third level of the league system. [4]

The club is located in Av. Belgrano Norte 730 in the neighborhood Villa Alonso. There is a sports/leisure hall, a buffet, a swimming pool, a stadium (known as Nuevo Rancho Grande) with a capacity of around 12,000 people, training facilities and a BMX track.[2][5]

The club has won 9 local championships of the Liga Cultural making it the third most successful club in the province behind local neighbours Club Atlético All Boys (33 championships) and Atlético Santa Rosa (10 championships).[3][6][2] In terms of football rivalries, the Santarroceño derby matches between Club General Belgrano and Club Atlético All Boys are the most renowned.

Players that have been developed by the club include Claudio Biaggio, Carlos Javier Mac Allister, Patricio Mac Allister and Luis Zubeldia.[7] Claudio Biaggio and Carlos Mac Allister both went on to represent their country.

In basketball the club has won the Liga Pampeana, the regional basketball championship in 2011. The Argentine BMX national championship was held at the club circuit in 2009. [8]
