Hello, My name is Karina and I am a student. I had to create a Wiki account because My Cool History teacher is making us be part of Wikiproject Chicago.

Project[edit]

I have been thinking on what article I am going to be improving and I have decided that i am going to be improving the Garfield Ridge wikipedia article.

Garfield Ridge, Chicago

So What?[edit]

Why should I improve this page? Why is Garfield Ridge important? It is important because it is one of the 77 comunities in Chicago. Each community has its own wikipedia article and each community deserves one. Garfield ridge deserves one because it has interesting information that should be shared with others. This community is one of the communities that borders Midway airport, an airport that serves over 17 million travlers annualy. The Garfield Ridge community has a very well transportation that includes the orange line and cta bus routes. It is important to have a good transportation system since there are many schools located in the community, including Kennedy High School. Beside the present importance, Garfiel Ridge has an interesting history including the community ethnicity changes throughout the years and a past United States House of Represenitive whom lived in this community, William Lipinski.

FOR MR. SILVA[edit]

Dear Mr.Silva, usually I just type up the article on microsoft word n then copy n paste it into wikipedia. Do you think this is a good idea? Also, for a couple of days i have been seeing other article and have been trying to add a chart onto my article, but i fail to do so. Do ou have any helpful hints that may help me?

  • Last week I started to add "Ethnicity" to my page but when I go to the history it does not show my user name, why is that?
    • You need to make sure it saves. Sometimes the save does not go through if the server is busy. Copying and pasting from word is OK but remember the formatting codes may not work unless you add them manually.

Hull House[edit]

I don't know why but everytime I edit a page My username doesn't show up on the history, even though I am logged in. Anyway here is what i ORIGINALLY had plan to put in the Hull House article, but I changed some of it.

Hull House Haunting[edit]

Over the years there have been many stories of ghosts in Hull House. One tells of Mrs. Charles Hull, who died in a second floor bedroom of natural causes, and how she haunts that room. Jane Adams stayed in that peticular room, where she was awakened by loud footsteps, even though the room was empty. Others also heard the same sounds. One even saw a figure near the bed in the haunted room and it vanished once the lamp was lit.

The most famous story is the one about the devil child. It has many versions; all containing a husband that wished that he would rather have the devil in his house then something else. He didn’t want another daughter or a picture of the Virgin Mary up on the wall; these are different versions of what the father didn’t want. The immigrant wife became pregnant and then there are different versions of what happened next. Some say that the father dropped the baby off at Hull House; other versions say that the wife came to Hull House for help. It was told that she complained of unusual pains when she was pregnant. She heard voices and had frightening nightmares. Then some versions tell that while she was giving birth, she died and that Jane Adams took the baby into her care. Others tell that she said that she would love her baby no matter what, after she saw how her baby looked like. The baby had scales, gleaming black eyes, claws on its hands and feet, and horns. The baby was said to be locked in the upper part of the house. It was also said that the baby was going to be baptized, but it broke from the bonds of the priest and danced around, laughing. The child was told to have stared out the window looking down at the streets. Residents were told of waking up to strange scrabbling noises and strong breathing near their faces, although they didn’t find no one. Even until this day, visitors sometimes see a devilish face peering out of a window.

History[edit]

In 1985, the southwest side was served by the metropolitan “L”. Although, the city expanded past the train tracks, leaving the expansion un-served of train transportation. During the 1940’s, state street and Dearborn street were being constructed with subways, so the city planned to expand the “L” route to Midway Airport.

In January 22, 1990, there was a ceremony held for the ground to be broken at Midway Station. Many people attended, including: Mayor Daley, Bernard Ford (CTA Acting Executive Director), David Williams (Chicago public works commissioner), etc. In 1993, the CTA finished building the new orange line. It cost about 500 million dollars, although they used old abandoned railroad right-of-ways. Midway Station now includes: a three-track terminal, a yard, car maintenance facility, an island platform, elevators leading to the sidewalk, and escalators and stairs connecting to the moving walkway heading toward the airport.

When the garage was built on the east side of Cicero, it bisected the walkway to the airport. In 2002, the Department of Aviation built a walkway through the garage so that the old terminal reconnects and makes its way through to the airport. Although, People still have to cross traffic lanes in 2-3 places it is better and safer compared to when they had to cross the traffic filled garage before. Now, metal bumpers protect the walkers in the garage. It is a much safer and friendlier environment between Midway Station and Midway Airport.
