State elections[edit]
The Greens NSW first contested the 1991 state election, nominating eight Legislative Assembly candidates and a Legislative Council ticket led by Ian Cohen. The party attained 0.5% of the statewide primary vote in the Legislative Assembly, including Bruce Welch, later a councillor, receiving 13% of the primary vote in the district of Marrickville.[1] The Greens NSW received 3.3% of the statewide primary vote in the Legislative Council, with Cohen narrowly missing election to the final two vacancies during the distribution of preferences to Call to Australia leader Fred Nile and Labor candidate Jan Burnswoods.[2] At the 1995 state election, the party renominated Cohen for election to the Legislative Council, this time receiving 3.7% of the vote, as well as a slate of 35 Legislative Assembly candidates attaining a statewide primary vote total of 2.6%. Cohen was successfully elected to the Legislative Council, and thus became the first politician on an explicitly green political platform to be elected to the New South Wales parliament.
