Jose Antonio Montanez (born March 25, 1989), known professionally as Monti Montanez and Che Antonio, is a Puerto Rican singer and songwriter from Caguas, Puerto Rico. From 2007 to 2009, he was part of the Latin boy band Menudo after taking part in MTV's Making Menudo[1]. From 2015 to 2017, he was part of the Latin group Treo and received a Latin Grammy Nomination for Best Tropical Fusion Album [2].

Beginnings[edit]

Che Antonio was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico and at the age of 9, moved to Heidelberg, Germany due to his step-father's military orders, and later moved to the United States. He started singing very early, imitating artists including Chayanne, Ricky Martin, and Manny Manuel in his grandparent's house. Growing up, he joined his school's drama team and choir competing in state wide singing competitions, and was part of his church's choir and praise team.

In Making Menudo (2007)[edit]

In 2007, Che Antonio took part in an MTV reality series titled Making Menudo to earn a spot in the reconfigured famous Latin boy band. That would be directed by Johnny Wright, he was the manager of Justin Timberlake and the new band music will be a fusion of urban, pop and rock in both English and Spanish. Ricky Martin and Draco Rosa were two of many who rotated through the band over the years. Auditions in different cities such as Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami, New York, among others. In the Dallas audition, radio announcer Daniel Luna and singer Luis Fonsi were part of the selection jury. The members chosen in this version were: Jose Bordonada Collazo, Chris Moy, Emmanuel Vélez Pagán, Monti Montañez (Che Antonio), and Carlos Olivero. Making Menudo launched as a primetime series on October 25, 2007, but was later pushed to afternoons due to low ratings.

The act was signed to a multi-album contract with SonyBMG label Epic Records. In December, a few weeks after the members of the group were chosen, their More Than Words EP was released, including four songs: "More Than Words (A E I O U)," "Mas Que Amor (A E I O U)," "Move," and "This Christmas." Their first album was scheduled for release in autumn of 2008.

In 2009 they had a video in two versions titled: "Lost", in which the American actress, model and singer of the American descent, Victoria Justice, appeared, which attracted much attention of the public towards the video. The group disbanded in early 2009.
