Nanjing Audit University (abbreviation: NAU, simplified Chinese: 南京审计学院;pinyin: Nanjing Shenji Xueyuan; colloquially: 南审, Nánshen) is an accounting-focused university with its campus at Jianye, a district of Nanjing, China. Nanjing Audit University has been renowned as the only financial and economical institute of higher education in China that carries “audit” in its name since 1987, and it represents China’s highest level in the field of audit. [1] Among all the undergraduate programs offered in NAU, auditing is the main program supported from the government and the Chinese Ministry of Education. [2]

NAU first named as the Nanjing Institute of Finance and Trade, which was founded in 1983. In 1987, the institute was renamed to Nanjing Audit University due to a conference held by the National Audit Office of China and the Nanjing Municipal Government that year. [3] It is under the auspices of the Jiangsu Provincial Government, the China National Audit Office and the People's Bank of China.

The guiding principle of education is to fortify, upgrade and optimize NAU with scientific research and characteristics on the reliable foundation of high quality education. With its surpassing educational conceptions, NAU has been making progresses to construct itself into a financial institute of higher education portrayed by the discipline of auditing, with mutually supported and developing disciplines of management, economics, language and literature, law and science and engineering. [4] With a motto of honesty, truth pursuing, diligence and devotion to public duty, Nanjing Audit University describes itself as being dedicated to traditional Chinese culture, the well-being of Chinese society and Chinese audit development. There are more than 22,000 students on two campuses covering 2200 acres: Mochou Campus, in the Jianye District of Nanjing, named after nearby Mochou Lake, and the Pukou Campus on the southern slope of Laoshan Mountain, a national forest and park.

History of NAU[edit]

  • August 1983. Nanjing School of Finance and Trade was established under the approval of Jiangsu Provincial Government. Under the supervision of Nanjing Municipal Government, the school was a vocational one, offering 2 to 3 years of certificate training.
  • May 1987. Nanjing School of Finance and Trade was transferred to be jointly administered by Chinese National Audit Office(CNAO), Nanjing Municipal Government and Jiangsu Education Committee. In the same year, it was renamed as Nanjing Audit Institute.
  • December 1990. Nanjing Audit Institute was under the direct leadership of CNAO and jointly administration of CNAO, Jiangsu Provincial Government and Nanjing Municipal Government with CNAO the major supervisor. The Institute is still of technical academy level and enrolls students from all over China.
  • February 1993. Nanjing Audit Institute was enhanced to a university.
  • June 1997. Under the approval of Jiangsu Degree Committee, Nanjing Audit Institute was licensed to award BA degree.
  • February 2000. Nanjing Audit Institute was transferred to be under the direct leadership of Jiangsu Education Committee.
  • April 2002. Under the approval of Jiangsu Provincial Government, Nanjing College of Finance was merged into Nanjing Audit Institute, thus the new Nanjing Audit University was born.
  • August 2011.the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, the National Audit Office and the People's Government of Jiangsu Province construct Nanjing Audit University together.

NAU was also one of the first educations institutions to offer courses in e-commerce.

Since 1998 it has an affiliation and cooperation with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) to promote international CPAs.

Till the end of 2011, there are 863 full-time instructors in NAU, including 101 professors, 270 associate professors, 395 have Ph.D.’s degree or are PH.D. Candidates and nearly over 64% of the faculty have master's degrees. Moreover, 10 instructors among the faculty have been granted subsidies from the State Council for their terrific contributions in academic. Another 16 instructors have either been selected as the members of the "333 Project" or honored as "Provincial Backbone Teachers." [6]

Coorperation[edit]

NAU firmly adheres to the idea of opening up to the outside world and has established cooperation and exchange contacts successively with the auditing institutions of the US, the UK, France, Germany, Australia, Sweden, as well as other countries. [8]Therefore, the students in NAU experience their chosen majors through more windows, explore new ways of thinking and developing their language and cultural skills.

Nanjing Audit University has launched joint undergraduate programs with Swinburne University of Technology in Australia, joint master programs with Edinburgh Napier University in U.K, and exchange students with Providence University and Shih Hsih University in Taiwan. [9]

In 1997, Nanjing Audit University began with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) to encourage international CPAs. More than 60 graduates have earned positions with the Big Four accounting firms (PWC, KPMG, E&Y, and DTT). [10]
