Hanno Hauenstein (*1986 in Regensburg) is a German journalist.

Life and Work[edit]

Hanno Hauenstein is a German journalist known for his expertise in culture and politics. He was born and raised in Regensburg. Following his studies in Berlin, Hauenstein embarked on a professional journey that led him to Tel Aviv in 2011, where he joined the Minerva Institute for almost a year, marking the beginning of his career as a freelance journalist.

Throughout his career, Hauenstein has contributed to various German media outlets, including Zeit-Online[1], Taz[2], der Freitag[3] as well as internationally recognized publications such as The Guardian[4], The Intercept[5], The Nation[6], Haaretz[7] and Jacobin[8]. In 2014, he was awarded a scholarship from the International Journalism Program (IJP), facilitating his tenure with the Israeli editorial team of i24news for several months.

In 2015, Hanno Hauenstein co-founded the German-Hebrew magazine "aviv"[9] alongside Itamar Gov. In 2020, he assumed the position of culture editor at the Berliner Zeitung. From 2021 to 2022, he served as the head of the culture department[10]. However, his tenure came to an end[11] in the fall of 2022 following critical remarks[12] made on social media regarding an event organized by newspaper's publisher Holger Friedrich, featuring Viktor Orbán.

Hauenstein's journalistic pursuits primarily revolve around culture, in particular contemporary art. Moreover, he is recognized for his critical engagement with the German discourse surrounding Israel-Palestine.
