Ski Dubai[edit]

Ski Dubai building

Ski Dubai is an indoor ski resort located inside The Mall of the Emirates in the Middle East[1], more specifically in Dubai. This resort is an extremely popular tourist attraction due to its magnificent facilities. Ski Dubai presents people with: a variety of long, short, steep and gentle slopes, a large snowpark, ski and snowboard lessons, chair lifts going up and down the snowy area, a zip line, a cafe and a chance to meet real penguins[2]. All of this in a 22,500 square meter, 279' high construction in one of the biggest malls in the world. This ski resort was established in November of 2005 and cost around $400 million to build and provides visitors with 5 slopes and a snowpark in crisp -2 degree Celsius temperatures[3]. This impressive attraction is owned and was made by the Majid Al Futtaim Group[4], and has gained a lot of success during its years due to the fact tourists and citizens are able to experience snow in the, at times, 50 degree Celsius desert. This famous attraction is covered with real snow, with a capacity of 1,500 people[5] and conveniently provides people who don't have their own equipment with all they need such as: the suit, boots, boards, ski poles and helmets for children under the age of 13. This famous construction also features a rather helpful gift shop to buy gloves and scarves.

Snowpark[edit]

For people who prefer not to ski or snowboard there is an attractions area that consists of many slides, and inflatable balls to roll in and for people that go to the snowpark a ride on the zip line called the 'Snow bullet' and the chair lifts for a fantastic view of the athletes below[6]. An adult and child pass for this part of the facility costs AED 315 each.[7] This area takes 3,000 meter squared of the entire building which slightly more than 13%. Moreover, this section is the lowest section and in it is where the penguin shows happen where people can meet and pet penguins.

Ski and snowboard slopes[edit]

This part of the park costs AED 210 (for adults) and AED 180 (for children) for two hours and AED 310 (for adults) and AED 285 (for children) for an all day pass mostly referring to experienced skiers and snowboarders[8]. This section of the ski park offers a variety of five different types of slopes, a large amount of ramps and areas to jump and perform tricks, as well as the possibility to have lessons costing from AED 180 to AED 616, the most expensive being private lessons[9]. The largest slope in the facility is an astonishing 0.4 kilometers long and is within a 85 meter high and 80 meter wide area[10]. Furthermore, this section of Ski Dubai fittingly provides snowboarders with pipes and jumps changed frequently to constantly provide a new experience to the athletes[11].

Freestyle night[edit]

Freestyle night is an event that frequently occurs to allow snowboarding and skiing athletes to perform and demonstrate their impressive skills to the public in a competition. This night consists of many jumps and flips and has become extremely popular over the years for more professional skiers and snowboarders to showcase the tricks they have developed[12]. Some famous celebrities also take part in the event and with everyone on the slopes they all execute stunts on water snow and metal.

Maintaining the conditions[edit]

Since Ski Dubai is an artificial facility it calls for regular managing to maintain the conditions indoors as they are, from the desert climate outside. The snow is made by chilling pure water that is later ejected out through pipes that are on the ceiling and because the environment inside is so cold the water sent out crystalizes and forms into snow[13] that helps keep the slopes and park on a thick layer of fluffy snow. The temperature of the water during this process is "-7c to -8c"[14]. The facility itself is effectively designed to be very well insulated from the desert climate outside and to do this the roof and the celling of the building are five meters apart "providing very efficient insulation"[15]. To maintain the look of ski slopes around 30 tons of snow are made per day during opening hours and are constantly being cooled by various glycol tubes that cover a great amount of the floor, on top of all of this there are twenty three extremely powerful machines that also help to keep the area in its desired temperature[16] which is between -1 and -2 degrees Celsius.
