David Homel (born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1952) is a novelist and a French to English translator.

Biography

After studying in the United States, France and Toronto, he finally settled down in Toronto in 1975, where he began his career as a translator. He moved again in 1980 to Montreal, where he began his career as a writer, and has been living there ever since. He received the Governor General's Literary Award in 1995 for his translation of Cette grenade dans la main du jeune nègre est-elle une arme ou un fruit? by Dany Laferrière, and in 2001 he shared the award with Fred A. Reed for their translation of Le cercle de Clara, by Martine Desjardins. That same year, he was appointed to the board of directors of CALQ for a 4-year term. All of his novels have also been published in French translations by Leméac/Actes Sud and Boréal. He has also been a long time participant of the literary festival Metropolis bleu, and is now a member of the Quebec Writers' Federation.
