Ref tag spacing.js removes the unnecessary spaces sometimes found between periods /words/commas and reference tags and adds space between reference ending tags and the stuff after them.
It will remove the uneccessary space in these cases:
The sentence. <ref>…
A quote." <ref>…
A quote.' <ref>…
A list item, <ref>…
and
Some words <ref>…
It will add a space in these cases:
</ref>A new sentence…
</ref>"A quote…
and
</ref>"A quote…
