NYSC: A Blessing turning Curse ... When the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Scheme was established in May, 22nd 1973, it was created as an attempt to enhance development in rural areas and also to promote National Unity. This was necessitated as a result of so many problem Nigeria was encountering then, problems such as Illiteracy, Poverty, inadequate social amenities and several others. Therefore, the then General Yakubu Gowon administration established a scheme (NYSC) where by students that just graduated from a higher institution gets posted to any state in the country for a period of one year to contribute his/her quota towards the development of the community he/she is posted to as an attempt to serve his/her fatherland. Although the scheme encountered few challenges,it eventually got off on a good note as it was warmly received by the entire nation. Corps members goes to a new community, getting a chance to experience new culture, new language as well as experiencing a change in Geo-political environment while deploying there duty towards the development of there fatherland. As years pass by, the scheme started experiencing several plagues which has threatened the continuation of the scheme as several school of thoughts are of the opinion that the scheme should be scrapped. Issues such as Killing and maiming of Corps members, Kidnapping of Corps members, improper care towards the livelihood of Corps member posted to the rural and remote areas which affects there health and psychologically destabilizes them. This school of thought can be said not to be far from the truth as what horrors of what happened during the 2011 Presidential election in Nigeria is still fresh in the minds where Corps members in charge of voting activities where harassed, kidnapped and even killed. Until proper care and security is provided for Corp members the goals which the NYSC scheme was created for may never be harnessed as parents and guardians would not jeopardize the life one there children/wards all in the name of serving a Fatherland which does not have any regards for his child. NYSC Scheme is a very good innovation which no doubts promotes unity among the people of Nigeria but the Government have to do a lot in other not to make a BLESSING a CURSE.
