From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

1969 in NASCAR was the only time that a driver boycott was ever implemented. When the 2.66 mile Talladega Speedway opened in 1969, many of the regular drivers refused to enter the race due to concerns of safety. Driver David Pearson won his third and final championship by winning 11 of the 51 events he entered that year. He bested second place finisher Richard Petty with a point total of 4,170 to 3,813.[1] The Ford and Mercury vehicles dominated the early part of the season, with Fords realing off a 13 race winning streak at one point.[2]
