Atlantis was founded in late summer 1972 by Inga Rumpf (vocals), Jean-Jacques Kravetz (keyboards) and Karl-Heinz Schott (bass). All three musicians played before in the band Frumpy. The founding members also counted guitarist Frank Dietz and drummer Curt Cress (formerly of the band Emergency).

After some live performances in Germany at the studios of Island Records in London, the first LP was produced, which was especially well received in the U.S., where Rumpf's blues oriented voice was appreciated. Diez and Cress left after the recordings the band. For a four-week tour through England with Procol Harum and Traffic George Meier joined as guitarist and Udo Lindenberg as drummer. After the tour they were replaced by Dieter Bornschlegel (formerly of the band Traumtorte) and Ringo Funk (ex-Jeronimo), with whom then the second album It's Getting Better (1973) was recorded.

During another four-week tour through England, Jean-Jacques Kravetz left the band to join Randy Pie. For him jumped in, at short notice, Rainer Schnelle. At the end of 1973, the band ranged among the three most popular groups of the readership by the then important music Journal Musikmarkt .

Already in summer of 1974, the next personnel change took place. For Rainer Schnelle came the British keyboarder Adrian Askey and for Dieter Bornschlegel came Alex Conti from Curly Curve. With this line-up the third album Ooh Baby was recorded 1974.
