I Want To Be A Hero[edit]

I know not many people know exactly what it is they want to do with their lives, and for most it takes a long time for them to figure it out. I can remember wondering myself for quite some time what it was I wanted to do exactly. However, I can honestly say that what I decided to be never really changed over time, at least not in my mind. You see, for as long as I can remember, all I have ever wanted to be was a hero.

When I was younger I can remember watching Saturday morning cartoons and thinking about being a super hero when I grew up. I wanted to be the good guy and swoop in to stop the bad guy and save the day. As I got older I still loved those stories of extraordinary people selflessly saving others, but learned that they were just stories. So I thought about how I, myself, could be a hero and help others.

I was in fifth grade when the September 11th attacks occurred when I found out how I, an ordinary person, could be a hero. I sat in class not completely aware of exactly what happened but I knew as well as everyone else it was not good. I can remember the news coverage of the horrible incident and the firemen and police officers courageous response. Like the heroes I watched on those quite Saturday mornings they were selfless and self sacrificing, the kind of people I wanted to be.

As I grew older and learned more about the world I found out my perspective of it was naive to say the least. And these amazing people were simply fighting a losing battle. The world is not black and white, there is no clear good or bad guy like in those Saturday morning cartoons I loved. There are many shades of gray in this world making the line between right and wrong blurred. This is why I decided in order to be the hero I wanted to be I would face the problems of this world head on and at their root. That is why I am interested in any and all organizations that promote international peace and security attempt to establish international development and relief to those in need. And most importantly promote education and international understanding because I believe that educating the world is the only way to save it.
