Hasagaya bin Abdullah (Jawi: هاسڬاي بن عبدالله; born November 1, 1963) is a Malaysian military officer who is currently serving as the 24th Deputy Chief of the Army.

Background[edit]

He was born in Segamat, Johor.

He joined the Malaysian Army on December 1, 1981 and underwent officer training at the Officer Candidate School, Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan. After a year of training, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Royal Malay Regiment on December 18, 1982.

As an infantry officer, his first command, in 1983, was as platoon commander of 6th Battalion, Royal Malay Regiment. He was appointed as a company commander in the 9th Battalion, Royal Malay Regiment in 1997 and served as the commanding officer of 17th Battalion, Royal Malay Regiment from 2003 to 2004.

He was appointed as the deputy commander of the 10th Parachute Brigade in 2008 and served in that position until 2011. He was subsequently appointed as commander of the 3rd Brigade on September 2011, commander of the 30th Brigade from September 2012 to October 2013, and commander of the 10th Parachute Brigade in 2015. He then went on to command the 3rd Division from 2016 to September 2018.

On 19 September, 2018, he was promoted to lieutenant general and appointed as the 24th Deputy Chief of the Army.[1]

He holds a Master of Defence Studies from the University of Canberra, a Master of Social Sciences from the National University of Malaysia, and a Master of Science in National Security and War Studies from the National Defence University, Islamabad, Pakistan.

He has also attended the Australian Army Command And Staff College Course at Fort Queenscliff, Australia in 1999, the Advanced Security Cooperation Course at the Asia Pacific Centre for Security Studies, Hawaii, United States, the National Security and War Course at the National Defence University, Islamabad, Pakistan in 2012, and finally the High Defence Studies Course for Senior Officers Asia Pacific, in Madrid, Spain in 2015.
