This lesson is related to the vandalism lesson, where I briefly mentioned Twinkle. If you are reading this, that means you were interested in using Twinkle and requested this lesson.

The aim of this is not to give you massive lectures, but to simply explain all of the Twinkle function. There are a fair few and although you may not use them all, I hope that you will find this useful.

Note: Twinkle will not work on Internet Explorer. I don't know about the less popular browsers, but I know that Twinkle certainly works on Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari and Opera. Apparently, it works on several others, but I have never used it on them, so I cannot confirm.

I will guide you through the Twinkle functions as they appear in the Twinkle menu. The menu is to the right of the edit and history buttons near the top of the page, usually just below the 'My preferences' link. It will show a 'TW' and a downward arrow.

The menu[edit]

ARV: Advance Reporting and Vetting. Use this tool to report vandals, sock puppets, sockpuppeteers and users which have usernames which are inappropriate. After you click ARV you get some options for the reason you are reporting the user or IP address and if they have had warnings etc. You should also state where the vandalism happened or what proof you have for the sock puppetry.

TB: Talkback. This function will send a talkback template on the user's talk page. You can choose whether you want to notify the user that they have a message on your talk page, on other user's talk page, on a notification board, at an article or other talk page or a 'You've Got Mail' template.

CSD: Criteria for Speedy Deletion. This tool significantly speeds up placing a speedy deletion template. You have to choose a criteria which is shown with it's number and a description. It will also automatically notify the author unless you uncheck the appropriate box at the top of the page.

XFD: Nominate for Deletion: This tool allows you to quickly submit an article for deletion via AfD or the appropriate deletion discussion for the page. It will also notify the author of the page.

RPP: Request Page Protection: If you can see a reason for a page requiring protection, for example it being persistently vandalised, you can request page protection to an admin. This tool will automatically do that for you and choose the appropriate level of protection when you choose a reason.

Last: Simply shows the difference between the latest revision and the one previous to that.

Unlink: This tool allows you to remove all links to the page you use the tool on. It should only be used for pages that are being speedy deleted to remove any links to them that would become red links. Don't play about with this tool, because links are useful and then hard to restore.

PROD: Simply a tool to PROD an article.

Tag: This function allows you to tag a page with any tag you may need. This includes clean up tags, merge proposals, the whole lot.

Warn: This allows to you to send any template notice or warning to a user's talk page. This includes vandalism warnings, violating a rule notices and anything that can be used to a user.

Wel: Allows you to welcome a user in a variety of ways. After clicking the Wel button, a menu will appear with an array of different styles of welcomes.
