The Tennis Premier League (TPL)[1] is an annual tennis league that takes place in India. Founded in 2018,[2] the league is supported by the All India Tennis Association (AITA), Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) and Indian Wheelchair Tennis Tour (IWTT).

Former international tennis players such as Leander Paes[3] and Sania Mirza are part of this league. When asked about it, Paes said, "The League is very important to me as it's helping the sport of tennis to grow. As we have seen in the past, the Indian Premier League (IPL) or the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) are becoming very popular in India".

In season 3 which was held in 2021, Goran Ivanišević, the current coach of global tennis player Novak Djokovic, was part of TPL. In season 4,[4] the winner of Wimbledon Championship 2022 men's doubles Matthew Ebden[5] from Australia[6] was a part of the league.

There are 8 teams participating:[7] Mumbai Leon Army, with Brand Ambassador Sonu Sood,[8] Hyderabad Strikers, co-owned by Rakul Preet Singh, Delhi Binny's Brigade with Malaika Arora,[9] Pune Jaguars, co-owned by Sonali Bendre Behl, Bengal Wizards,[10] co-owned by Leander Paes, Bengaluru SG Mavericks with Brand Ambassador Sania Mirza, Gujarat Panthers with Arjun Kapoor, and Punjab Patriots co-owned by Taapsee Pannu.[11]

The founders of Tennis Premier League are Kunal Thakkur and Mrunal Jain.[12] The League kicked off its first season in October 2018.

Clear Premium Water has joined forces with Tennis Premier League as the official sponsor for season 5.[13] This time the matches are broadcast live on Sony Sports Network[14] from 12 to 17 December 2023.

Team formation[edit]

In TPL there are a total of 8 teams, with 24 players battling out for the final title. Each team has its own owner with a mentor,[15] coach, a physio and nutritionist.

They also have a selection of marquee national and international players, which get selected via auction.[16][17]

Race to Gold[edit]

Race to Gold (RTG)[24] is an initiative which is organized by TPL themselves in association with MSLTA, GSTA and DLTA to discover India's tennis gems and offer them sponsorship and an unforgettable experience at TPL.
